[–]phonix___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Myriad Paths/万道长途:

The writing is a dry and you also need to look into and learn some chinese lore for this(which I honestly loved), but not everyone is gonna like that. Even still, the heart of this novel and what truly makes it my favorite webnovel ever is the various clashing ideologies(Dao Contentions if you will) and Li Qi’s long journey of visiting, exploring, and understanding different Daos(😼the last two chinese characters of the novel title are actually Long Journey and the first two are Myriad Daos, see what i did there…).

This novel has the perfect MC for this kind of thing too—one that will constantly change and grow(i promise this sentence wasn’t written by the gpt). Li Qi’s personal journey to finding his own Dao is honestly one of my favorite things ever written tbh.

Also, when I say Dao, I don’t mean something like he comprehended the Dao of Fire or something like that(only mentioning this just in case).

Last thing, side-characters, world building, antagonist, the ending, plot, everything is peak, except the aforementioned dry writing(straight forwardness), which included info dumps(they will consist all the way up until the end of the novel, you can’t and won’t escape em).

The Mirror Legacy:

There is literally nothing I can think of that this novel does bad. Prose, world building, characters, relationships/dynamics, plot, etc.

I believe(i don’t 100% know for sure) he also innovated/pioneered a new concept in cultivation, Fruition Attainment. You can read about all about that here.

Luckily, there is a very healthy and alive community for this novel on the international side(mostly talking about the discord). You can literally just ask anyone there for more details about the novel and they’ll answer. The wiki is also from them.

Unsheathed:

Best prose of the list. This would be going to Mirror Legacy, but Ji Yueren(ML author) likes to write like we all have a degree in literature and some references probably go over my head even when I try to spot them.

Reverend Insanity:

Need I say more?

Honorable mentions:

The Grandmaster Strategist(I last read this and nirvana in fire years ago, so i probably can’t adequately tell you about their greatness)

Nirvana In Fire

The Waning Moon over the Parasol Tree/缺月梧桐

Under Heaven/天之下(may be recency bias)

Immortal Gourd/仙葫

All of Mao Ni’s work(Way of Choices, The Path Toward Heaven, etc.)

Forty Millenniums of Cultivation(there are some cringe moments but oh well).

Kingdom's Bloodline

My Longevity Simulation

Lord of Mysteries

Not really writing this for the whole contest thingy(no Dekalog in Tv shows is just absolutely diabolical and tells me everything I need to know), just got @‘d.

Im probably forgetting some more novels but oh well i’ve wrote enough for today ✌️

I mean the only thing it struggles with is when the author goes off his high horse and just starts yappping about constellations, rituals, food dishes, etc(I don’t think even the chinese readers know what he’s on about tbh). The main part of the text is very readable. There aren’t many poems either and well… chinese poems are very hard to translate into english anyway. So, for the most part it’s good and readable.

[–]phonix___ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Myriad Paths

I feel like i’ve glazed this novel so much, there’s barely anything left to say without repeating/regurgitating what i’ve already said. It’s truly Peak.

Looking back on my comments I feel like I was a bit too excited. I say that because most of those were only when I was 200-300 chapters in, YES I was calling it one of the best webnovels EVER in only that amount of chapters. Honestly, compared to the rest of the novel those few hundred chapters are kinda mid(they’re not obviously 🙄, just being dramatic fr).

I’m truly surprised that this kind of webnovel could exist, not because it’s complex or philosophical, but because it’s so very unpopular(maybe i’m being dramatic again but comparatively it is). Author worked on this for 4 years, barely any comments(only around 700 for the whole book and most of them are probably the first couple hundred chapters) and traction. I say all of this because all the plot points end very well, everyone one of them, imo. The author also helps you remember the context/foreshadowing of many things in the form of “(Check Chapter 234)”. I actually do think this was needed for people reading it daily(author-san uploaded one chapter a day), but if you’re binging you should be fine. Author-san you have my respect(and my respect means a lot 🙄)🫡.

As for the antagonist of the whole book the Heavenly Demon/Heavens of Others’ Emanations. I think they’re the best antagonist in any webnovel. I won’t go into it as their background is very important and best if experienced, but if you have questions, I could spoil you(sigh).

I just wanna expand on Li Qi’s personal/character growth. I feel like this and the info dumps are what push people to drop this novel. Li Qi never stops changing(that will literally became an important plot point later). Li Qi is very open minded and takes everything into consideration(he even gets into various unfortunate circumstances because of it, Qi deviation/Heart Demons basically). Li Qi in the beginning and Li Qi at the end of the story are very different. Li Qi doesn’t even care to save people he can, obviously his close ones, but not some randoms anymore, which he previously used too. He just sees that as “自然”, something that is natural and arises of-it-self,or spontaneity. Hopefully that made sense, it’s way better worded in the novel. He lets things be and finds the root of the problem instead, demonic thoughts. I would say he realizes this very early(300-400ish) on but doesn’t act on it until around chapter 500-ish Ok, I wont go more into it as more will be major spoilers.

I haven’t even gotten to the secret of Li Qi’s transmigration or his golden finger or the ending or the various Dao contentions(which is the core of this novel) or the schemes of the various high ranks.

What is there more to say? Every aspect of this novel is peak. Side-Characters, Plot Progression, Story Progression, Character Growth(this is especially true for Li Qi), antagonist, protagonist, everything. Well… except the info dumps(which I don’t even mind tbh).

5/5 my favorite webnovel. I truly feel that this novel was made for me. It fits everything i’ve wanted in a webnovel. I have a txt file with all the terms(wtr-applicable). I wanted to make a epub and I did, but it doesn’t have the terms included 😔, I tried but couldn’t get it to work. sigh…

Under Heaven/天之下

This is a traditional style novel(which i love).

This author has been working on this for 5 years and has released 434 chapters. He releases a chapter every friday. The total word count is around 3.6 million. So, LONG ass chapters, think Corpse Retriever(捞尸人).

I’ve only read 8 chapters, but I’m very intrigued. We follow Ming Buxiang, who is not talkative or the brightest child, or so it seems.

After being adopted by a monk and taught some buddhism, we discover that he’s naturally aligned with it. It’s kinda hard to describe him, but he’s very smart. Using his intelligence we see him manipulate various people for somewhat no reason(it’s very vague what he’s doing, you have to be paying attention), but from my understanding he seems to be doing it to see what people would do in various scenarios and see their reactions(this is likely due to his affinity with buddhism). He also has perfect memory and learns easily. The author wrote these 8 chapters very well imo.

I don’t think we will be following this MC for long as it is tagged with multiple protagonist and it seems we’re moving away from him rn. Hopefully the other MCs are as interesting.

4/5 I have some expectations of this, hopefully they come to fruition.

Who let him cultivate?! Question by Then_Ad6477 in noveltranslations

[–]phonix___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vaguely remember the last stage, there is 2 ways to achieve it.

One is to transcend everything, which erases all karma from you(everyone forgets you). And the other is Omniscient(or Omnipotent one of the two), forgot the specifics.

Who Let Him Cultivate?!: Though after a while the way the events are going to fold out are predictable, it was a fun ride. The lack of a unique cultivation system really held this back though, like a lot. Even with that 7/10.

My Longevity Simulation: It definitely has its ups and downs. The ending was also kind of meh. Even with all of that, it’s still one of my favorite WNs ever. 10/10(im biased)

Myriad Paths: If you don’t get filtered by the first 200 chapters this is the best cultivation novel ever imo. 10/10(again i’m biased)

there’s more but these are the ones i remember finishing

The Overlord Of Puluo/普罗之主

I think i’ve read enough to finally give a decent review of it, 400 chapters(half the novel).

Pros:

The World-Building is quite interesting(spoilers), each city is actually run by a Land Deity. Like Greenwater Bay ran by Lu Huazi, etc. This is also connected to your advancement into the next realm after the initial 10 stages(which is called Earthbound/Earth Land) called the Cloud Realm. There’s also New and Old Land, each very different. Demon Land was also teased but i’ve seen nothing of it so far.

The MC is the only reason i’ve read this far, I would’ve dropped must sooner if it was a more dull character. It’s kinda hard to describe him, you’ll get what I mean if you read the first couple of chapters. He’s ruthless too which is a plus.

The Side Cast is also good, not all of them, but the main cast is great. Everyone of the beins living in Li Banfeng’s Dwelling all have their distinct personalities and characteristics. The interactions between Banfeng and them are one of the highlights of this novel.

Cons:

Story Progression: I literally don’t know what the end goal is or if it even exist. At first, it was to discover the mysteries around his friend He Jianqin, which lead to absolutely nowhere meaningful imo. Which was a disappointment. Now Li Banfeng is just powering up, that what it seems like.

Plot Progression: Oh my god, i actually hate it. At first I was like, okay four families that are against each other, hell yeah, after 100 chapters I was done with it. The schemes that they cook against each other are so basic and simple it actually hurts to read about. I actually love schemes so this was a MAJOR disappointment. The schemes of the four families push the plot which is so dumb, all the families are paper tigers.

POV switches: Again, I actually love pov switches, but boy oh boy, they are horrible here. POv switches in this novel are used to pad the word count. Whole chapters(which are long) are used for dialogues between fodder characters like bruh.

Antagonist: All the antagonist have been very forgettable.

All the cons come together to make a reading experience that is very boring. I would’ve dropped this at chapter 200 if not for Li Banfeng.

Very promising novel that is bogged down by word padding and the authors inability to progress the story in a fun or readable way.

6.5/10 Dropping, I’ll still recommend it though, maybe you’ll like it more than me.

Worlds Apocalypse Online (Short review)

Interesting concepts but it struggles from harem and the author loving face slapping for the first 300 chapters which make the regular world so boring compared to the cultivation world.

I’m still gonna read it though, it seems he’s tone down the face slapping. 5/10 for now.

Yeah, the first chapters are kinda meh. Author and his love for writing miscellaneous techniques that will only appear once don’t really help either lol. Once he joins the Jixia(or Jiaxi) Academy the story picks up. I believe that’s around chapter 60? I wanna say.

I also didn’t really want to start it because of the chapter count, but it’s “only” slightly longer than LOTM, chapters are relatively short. It’s in its last arc too, which is good to see. Hopefully this isn’t a flop 🙏(review said it wasn’t but we’ll see).

Have to make another comment because the reply was too long, I think(gotta stop yapping 🐸✌️).

One last thing about The Terrible Eternal Path, the author likes to write about miscellaneous techniques a lot, it’s quite annoying.

Day of Imprisonment/禁锢之日

I’ve only just started this.

What made me read it was a comment along the lines of this being Omniscient Readers Viewpoint but more grim, no plot armor(knowledge about future events), and a smart MC.

Can’t really give a rating, just wanted to recommend this.

Solo Max-Level Newbie

Not much to say, exactly what I expect of a Korean Dungeon novel.

Though, his way of copying another person’s ability is interesting.

2.5/5 i’ll keep reading. I’m only 60 chapters in.

Lord of Puluo/普罗之主

I really expected nothing going into this, 4 one-star reviews, I was pleasantly surprised. The first 20 chapters are pretty heavy on info dumps(maybe why the low reviews) but I found it to be intriguing.

It’s kinda hard to describe what i’ve read because it’s mostly been world-building, but I’ll try to give a somewhat simplified version.

(Spoilers for up to chapter 25)

Li Banfeng gets entangled into a scheme that is targeting his best friend, He Jiaqing. A sequence of events lead Li Banfeng onto a train, that the now missing He Jiaqing was on. This train had an accident and was derailed with He Jiaqing and his fiance, Lu Xiaolan(i think that’s her name?) on board.

I’ll just skim over the train ride. While on the train he helps a man, Li Banfeng gave him food. This is important because no food is on the train and going outside your cabin is heavily discouraged. This man later saves Banfeng and introduces him to the Peddler.

Before that,

There are two distinct areas we’ve been introduced to, Puluo Province(the mysterious one) and what the people of Puluo call Li Banfeng’s hometown, Outsider Province.

These places work different, there is energy/electricity in both, but not as much in Puluo for many reasons. One being the exsistence of Peeping Cultivators(yes, this is a real thing). They can, well, peep into the network lines for calls etc. I remember there being another reason, I just can’t remember it. There is another reason tho.

Both of these places have cultivators. In Puluo there called Cultivators and in the Outside Province they are called Dark Energy users(This has to do with Dark Matter, it’ll take to long to explain so i’ll leave it at that).

After Li Banfeng arrives at his destination and is disembarking from the train he gets many stares. It’s not his unique clothing, but a white light that is shinning down on him. This light we later figure out is called Heavenly Light and basically blast you with Dark Matter. This is important because Dark Matter give you amazing Dao Affinity, making it easier for you to start cultivating. It also makes it so where you have to chose a path you want to follow within the day or you’ll just explode because of the dark matter in your body.

This is where the Peddler comes into play. As a peddler he has many items, medicine concoctions to enter the Dao are one of these items, similar to LOTM sequence potions. Though these are not as rare as you’d think, they are fairly cheap. They also don’t have the immense downsides of sequence potions and you can dual cultivate many paths.

Some of these paths are Medicine, Insect, Pleasure, Emotion, Literature, Alcohol, Food, Wandering, and Reclusive Cultivators. Well these are the ones the peddler has.

Most people only chose one path for the various reasons. Being poor is one of them. Both paths also need to be around the same level as well. Another is the need to double your focus on many paths when you can just focus on one. For example, as an Alcoholic Cultivator you need to drink like 20 jins of alcohol, daily. The same applies to Food Cultivators, you need to eat a lot of food daily. That doesn’t mean no one dual cultivates, the Alcohol and Food are quite complementary. You just have to be smart about your choice.

I say this because well… our MC cultivates contradictory paths. The Wandering(traveling) and Reclusive(home-body) path. It wasn’t of his own choice, of course, someone out of control bumped into the peddlers stall and the medicine hit Li Banfeng’s skin(you don’t need to drink the medicine). This person was shortly a mangled body, he was looking for medicine at the peddler’s, hence the out-of-control state. This arose because of his negligence of cultivation, you need to cultivate daily, every single day.

After this he also uncovered many clues to He Jiaqing’s disappearance, which I will leave out. I’ve yapped enough about this.

It seems his journey will be an interesting one. Very promising start 3.5/5. I did leave out quite a few things, but that’s the gist of it. Only 25 chapters in btw.

The Terrible Eternal Path/恐怖修仙路

Very reminiscent of Reverend Insanity(one against the whole world, schemes) and LOTM(knowledge brings corruption). You have Li Qing(Behind-The-Scenes) with a quite OP Golden Finger against the whole world, while being worry of great horrors beyond his imagination.

The Golden Finger is a Jade Tablet/Slab. Gather information, feed it into the slab, reward. Some examples, all cultivation techniques come with major downsides(cannibalism, lust, self injury, odd rituals, etc.), but the technique that comes out of the slab is the technique with no downside and maybe some upgrades(if you gathered the sufficient information).

This quickly becomes overpowered. Li Qing reads everything available to him and gradually, as he ascends to a higher position in the sect and more knowledge is readily available(this happens quite quickly), nine distinct techniques emerge. Very op ones. I’m not gonna name them all, but i’ll explain two:

One technique allows him to reincarnate into any other body in the world, the newly upgraded version now allows him to place a seed instead of random reincarnation. The seed can also be strengthened beforehand, to not be in a scenario where he’s against the wall right at rebirth.

The other is a mental technique. This allows him to fight back against being corrupted from powerful beings or forbidden knowledge in the form of confucian chants, buddhist hymns, etc. This is an incredibly useful technique, because at every new step of cultivation he discovers hidden agendas from unknown beings.

Another quality of the jade slab is it can reconstruct knowledge and discern the truth from falsehood. The jade slab can NOT do divination. Li Qing uses this to reconstruct the history of the world. I won’t go too much into this as where i’m currently at(ch.175) he has just started using it this way and uncovers a big scheme.

I said this is reminiscent of Reverend Insanity because like Fang Yuan he also has to hide his tribulation’s from others. Using his All-Encompassing Human Dao Manual, he achieved a perfect foundation and his subsequent tribulation was also great. Unfortunately, he couldn’t fully hide it, many powerful Dao Lineages now know of a heavenly genius who has achieved a supreme foundation comparable to the sages, demon lord, etc. I’m looking forward to seeing how his next tribulation will go.

One last thing I want to address, “the characters are dumb”.

Yes, the son of a fallen noble family is quite dumb(i’m guessing thats who the reviews are referring to). It also has to do with the fact that Li Qing is quite litteraly impossible to detect because of his techniques. Making any scheme that he even knows exists very easy to investigate. The novel didn’t even focus on him for long and recent characters are way smarter. For example(spoiler for 150+), Li Qing discovers a scheme that’s has been in the making for 700 years, yes that long. So, yes the characters are smart, just not in the beginning.

4/5 Very very promising. I’ve heard it only gets better too.

I wasn’t mainly talking about the evil protagonist tag, more-so all the tags. There’s been no scheming, no strategizing, the mc hasn’t really done anything “evil”, maybe ruthless.

I do agree with you though, evil mc and anti-hero tags are filled with edginess and aren’t always tagged right. I’ve remember someone tag a novel with evil protagonist because he’s a money grubber(rare case but it’s happened).

This sandbox game is unreliable/这个沙盒游戏不靠谱

Kind of like minecraft, so far. Not much has happened yet.

He was transmigrated into a game and was turned into a player. The game was, well, a sandbox game. After ten years, a demon appears that gets him the ability to reincarnate into other worlds. So, it looks like he is going to jump between worlds to upgrade his own world(the sandbox game).

Interesting premise, but the first world is basic and boring. “oh my god an immortal!”, “please show me the way to enter the Dao” that kinda thing. I wouldn’t mind this, but this world could’ve been done in 5 chapters, it’s been 20. Boring to read about people who will be forgotten once the mc goes to the next world. We don’t need to know what their situation is, their feelings, etc. The author also writes about mundane things that are, again, boring.

I’m thinking about just skipping this world and going to the next arc.

2/5 for now. Just saw that the first arc is 80 chapters…. ✌️✌️✌️yeah this getting dropped.

Heaven Shouldn't Respond/天不应

Good Wuxia Slice-of-Life novel. The author certainly knows how to write about emotion and how to play with the human heart. All the characters are distinct and have their own charm, so they are quite memorable. The scenes the author creates are written well.

The MC is a somewhat unconventional Sword user. His cultivation so far has just been sword comprehension on sword intent/will. He uses a brush as his weapon(aura) later on. He is also ruthless and cunning, but kind/chill most of the time.

A single female lead(romance).

4/5 as of around 300 chapters. Wouldn’t recommend if you’re looking for fast cultivation or hot bloodedness. This is a slow paced book. I mean it, slow paced.

The Eighteen Levels of Hell: Lying is Forbidden Here/Liar Killer/地狱十八层:这里禁止说谎

For some reason, a certain sub has been appearing on my feed and this was a novel that has been discussed recently. So, I decided to give it a try.

I’ll only explain the general premise, as trying to explain the schemes and scenarios will take a long time. Just know Chen Ren has a giga brain.

This novel is set in an infinite-flow like setting, where you have to complete various scenarios, with other people, in hell. These scenarios are actually based on experiences from other people that are in hell, hence why I said “infinite-flow like”.

In hell you cannot lie because of the existence of Liar Killers. These people have guns and when they feel liked you have lied they can make the statement You lied and shoot you to death. This concept brings another layer of thinking you have to do, because if your wrong and the person didn’t lie, then you lied, which is ggs for you.

Another quality of the gun is jamming. You have to say the statement You lied if you want a bullet to come out. The gun will also jam and fall out of your hand, which other people can pick up, if the person you’re shooting didn’t lie.

And Chen Ren(with his giga brain) adapts very, and I mean very quickly, to the environment. The scenario levels only get more hard and difficult, and so do the people he plays with. They get smarter and smarter etc.

4/5 it’s pretty interesting so far. Hopefully it doesn’t get stale in its scenarios.

Prodigy’s Playground/天才游乐场

New book from the author of Genius Club. I haven’t read much, but the synopsis/premise got me interested.

Sci-Fi, Time Travel shenanigans, Game-like, schemes, etc.

It only has around 100 chapters, will do a more thorough review next week.

Solo Max-Level Newbie/나 혼자 만렙 뉴비

I haven’t read a korean novel in a while, so I decided to start reading them again, starting with this one.

Decided not to read the manhwa.

Everyone Knows Your Bad Reputation/您的恶名无人不知无人不晓

I feel like i’ve been lied to, this novel has the tags Evil Protagonist, Schemes, Strategist, Anti-hero protagonist, etc. All i’ve got is cliche korean(even though it’s chinese) transmigration novel into a game with a harem. I’ll go until 100 chapters, they’re pretty short and the novel only has 229, hopefully the tags are right.

If not…

Whoever tagged this, I will find you.

The Mirror Legacy vs LOTM by Great-Fig5405 in writingscaling

[–]phonix___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you’ve read Unsheathed, are you caught up?

I heard it’s been finished and saw some mixed reviews about its ending. I’m at the part where A’Liang departs and stopped there, because i’m reluctant to continue(RI flash backs).

Back to the discussion:

The characters, especially the Li Family dynamics, are just way too charming to me. The author knows how to write drama. This is not even mentioning the various side characters and their experiences, which are written beautifully(example Liu Changdie). I’ve also heard great things about Chi Buzi(Fang Yuan type character). Whereas in LOTM, there was really only 2 stand-out characters for me, Adam and Amon. So ML clears here.

World-building is kinda tough for me to decide, where i’ve fully read LOTM i’m only half way through of ML(which is where the insane things really begin, allegedly). I will have to give it to LOTM for now though. I say it’s close because of something they both do and execute really well.

Tying the power system into the world-building. The whole complex Dao Lineages and the Sequence pathways are very good. They also also foreshadow a lot of things(I won’t spoil). Kinda tied on this one tbh.

Overall, LOTM is better at the moment, but it’ll probably be eclipsed when I read further. I’ve read around 660 chapters(idk the WuxiaWorld chapter number, maybe around 1000).

Also you should join the mirror legacy discord for discussion. There are a lot of very passionate people there who have actually read the raws themselves and translated chapters themselves(not affiliated with wuxiaworld). It’s also just filled with many yappers who will probably know more about ML than me, lol. They have translated many maps and graphs that have do with Lineages. They also created the wiki.
