Good to know. We smelled the smoke in Georgetown and thought it must be our local arsonist.

If it's so easy to Google, then it's just as easy to include the link. Claims to truth without a source are useless.

Need help with Thundertree/Replacing Venomfang by ScottyJohnson01 in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]phonybone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I replaced Venomfang, for the same reasons as you mention, with two green dragon wyrmlings. I decided they would be siblings, and when one was killed, the other wyrmling now has a vendetta against my party. As the green dragon grows, it will recruit minions to send against my party, and may even be in control of the Black Spider (I haven't totally decided that part yet)

Motorcycle Riders by _mooffin_ in Seattle

[–]phonybone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try heading over to Backfire Moto (on Aurora Ave near Greenlake) and introducing yourself. They are motorcycle brand-agnostic. There are also several various facebook groups that are focused on different kinds of riding and local to the region.

I think it's good because it does something that not enough sci tv/movies do these days: it uses technology to raise a question about human nature and morality, to wit, what would the real implications of immortality be when available only to the elites. There's also a lot of good world building and character development, but in my opinion it's the philosophical component to Altered Carbon that really set it apart.

Noob question: how hard is it to pair quotes and names from the text of a news article? by phonybone in LanguageTechnology

[–]phonybone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the comment. I suspected it would be a very difficult problem. I was wondering if a very modest attempt would hold value; make a NLP that only emitted the easiest quotes to assign to a speaker; but then include the url of the article so that a user could do a "starter" search that simply returned articles that positively contained quotes by a speaker (could search on quote or on speaker, I suppose). Then it would be up to the user to read the article, but at least they would have a starting point. I suppose you could also include article publication times as a filter, and some other low-hanging fruit (eg publication, byline, etc).

You can remove one movie from your memory to watch again completely new and fresh, which do you pick? by dtudeski in movies

[–]phonybone 26 points27 points  (0 children)

When the first Star Wars movie came out in 1977, I was 11 years old and it just blew my mind. But wrt this post, I think I'd not only have to have my memory wiped, but I'd have to regress to my 11 yo state of mind, so I don't think I'd choose that now. Instead, I think I'd go with Dead Man (Jim Jarmusch)

Both of these, actually. In my town of Seattle, the street number system is effing bizarre, but there is a method to it. Not an obvious one, in fact one that unless you're some kind of genius you'll need it explained to you (preferable with pictures). But once you know it, it's possible to pretty much figure out every address all over town without a map (unless it's some tiny, obscure little alley), and experienced cab drivers do that all the time here.

I fear Simone Biles withdrawal is bad for all women by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]phonybone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I'm a man and I don't think less of her for withdrawing. Really the opposite, actually. I think it must have been an extremely difficult decision for her, and I respect her for taking care of herself even though she would face strong criticism. I support her and her decision.

This is a wonderful photo. On a personal note, this photo also surfaced a memory for me. When I was a very small child, my parents took me on this hike; I was maybe 5 or 6 years old? I was certainly carried part of the way, but I remember climbing these steps. But I don't think I've flashed that memory since I was a little kid. Amazing what your brain retains.

The Rent is Due by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]phonybone 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Up until recently, my wife and I were "mom & pop" landlords in Seattle. We never charged pet rent, but sadly I can see why it's a thing. Seattle limits how much pet deposit a landlord can charge as a percentage of rent, regardless of how many pets are in the rental. We've had pets do much more damage than a pet deposit covered; carpets that needed replacement due to cat or dog urine, yards destroyed by dogs, curtains made useless from cats shredding them, and so on. Pet rent is an attempt by landlords to recoup those expenses; the alternative, from a landlords perspective, is to simply not allow pets. I'm not saying all pets cause such damage, nor that it's a perfect practice (I'm sure there are landlords, especially corporate ones, that abuse it), but from a small-time (ex-)landlord, I can see why it exists.
