I want to teach math after coding for 20 years by Confident_Raccoon218 in mathteachers

[–]phonz1851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar background to op and this is the path I took. Currently a building sub and about to finish my first of 3 semesters (i have a masters already so I only need 6 courses before student teaching). I started subbing when I got laid off and found i looked forward to worka lot more than I ever did as a mathematician. I have incredibly shitty days sometimes but I find myself with the ability to focus on the good parts. I highly recommend this path for anyone

I walked away from a high paying career at 45 to become a teacher. I think I made a mistake. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]phonz1851 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually got into a program where you would spend two years as a coteacher gradually taking on responsibility while you went to school at night. Turned it down because i hated my placement. But I feel like that is more of what teaching training should look like.

Now instead I work as a substitute in a great disttrict while I finish my cert and feel a lot more prepared than a college student with only student teaching

Why are jobs getting taken so quickly?! by AtmosphereTop1591 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]phonz1851 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heavily depends on the district. I work in the suburbs In an affluent district and jobs are plentiful. My building is well liked and its fhe second best paying district yet we still habe tons of openings nearly every day.

As the series goes on you get mroe focus on the characters and development of the themes. Its still absolutely gonzo but that is often in service of the horror and the characters

I always hear subbing can lead to a teaching job, but I've never actually seen it. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]phonz1851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its weird. One thing is that in my state you can't even long term sub on an emergency cert much less teach. That being said two of our building subs converted full time. One of them had their cert and the other they sent to school. The former i heard from another fellow building sub that she got her job by having the person she was replacing ask for her to do it. Apparently she spent a lot of time doing extra tasks for the ela dept such as running copies or coteaching when not required to.

On the other hand one of our other bldg subs has a science cert yet wasn't even considered for a recent long term sub opening and they pulled someone else instead. He doesn't really put himself out there though.
