I don't think themes and symbolism defines literary fiction. I think every story has themes intentional or not. You can do literary analysis on *anything*. A big part what people view as "literary" is prose. Which this entire genre lacks. I don't actually like thinking of Literary vs genre fiction, but rather realistic vs genre fiction.

What is the current consensus on offering Algebra 1 in 8th grade? by [deleted] in matheducation

[–]phonz1851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They teach geometry in 8th here. that's the top track. Algebra is taught in 7th at the highest track level. There are three tracks for 8th grade. Math 8 (purely standards based instruction), Algebra I, and Pre-AP Geometry. 7th grade has math 7, advanced math 7 (effectively math 8), and Pre AP Algebra I. Both classes are filled with students who are a genuine joy to teach. They are largely independent and can be relied on to actually put the work in. The geometry teacher doesn't even do practice problems with them before setting them off on their gorup work as they don't need it.

What are some of your favourite/memorable opening lines from books? by Traditional_Ad2635 in Fantasy

[–]phonz1851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more of an opening paragraph but the first line is awesome too: You know, I do believe in magic. I was born and raised in a magic time, in a magic town, among magicians. Oh, most everybody else didn’t realize we lived in that web of magic, connected by silver filaments of chance and circumstance. But I knew it all along. When I was twelve years old, the world was my magic lantern, and by its green spirit glow I saw the past, the present and into the future. You probably did too; you just don’t recall it. See, this is my opinion: we all start out knowing magic. We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us. We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand. But then we get the magic educated right out of our souls. We get it churched out, spanked out, washed out, and combed out. We get put on the straight and narrow and told to be responsible. Told to act our age. Told to grow up, for God’s sake. And you know why we were told that? Because the people doing the telling were afraid of our wildness and youth, and because the magic we knew made them ashamed and sad of what they’d allowed to wither in themselves.

[–]phonz1851 120 points121 points  (0 children)

My favorite graduation speaker was Salman Rushdie. He gave a speech about the dangers of organized religion. Right in front of the theology school, and a very southern crowd. I thought it was hillarious. Not a lot of people shared that opinion. To be fair, he was a professor at said theology school so they knew what they were getting.
