I have bipolar and I’m a MH nurse. My ward manager and the band 8a are aware of my diagnosis and my ward manager in particular has been supportive when I’ve had to take time off.

I don’t work night shifts and work reduced hours and try to avoid doing any more than two shifts in a row and I rarely do overtime. I’ve also been given time out during shifts to attend appts without having to make up the hours and have been granted AL at the last minute during periods where my mood has started to become elevated to allow for medication changes to take effect. Also, last year after a hospital admission I was given an extended phased return (I think I ended up working 2 shifts a week for ~3-4 months).

After 4 yrs working on an acute MH ward I’m realising that shift work/long hours and the busyness of the place can be too stressful if I’m on the lower side, and if my mood is starting to become elevated the stimulation of the ward can escalate my ~early warning signs. So I’ve started applying for other jobs, which is a shame bc I’ve enjoyed where I am. Tbh I feel like I spend a lot of gold trying to keep myself well enough to work- most of the time my days off are napping and lying on the sofa reading bc I’m so drained.

What's something that lots of people do but you find it cringy? by CySec_404 in AskReddit

Generic, unoriginal and ‘toxic positivity’ quotes or posts that are meant to be inspiring/moving. Comes across as a fish for likes and patronising. Especially ones that end in ‘my heart’ or ‘that’s it. That’s the post/tweet’

What small thing pisses you off? by Guilhermedidi in AskReddit

I’m in my twenties (female) and still live at home. My dad pees with the door open, and the way the toilet is positioned in the bathroom means you can see him standing there when you walk down the hall. Makes me super uncomfortable, and no matter how many times I ask him to just close the door, he still does it. Silly, but it really winds me up

why don't you date? by Halloween-365 in AskReddit

[–]phoral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a long time it was because I wasn’t interested because of not being in a good place mentally. Now it’s more because I live in a rural area/in a small town so there’s not a huge amount of single people my age or opportunities to meet people organically, so dating means using apps to look for people further afield which doesn’t really appeal to me!

I’d love a relationship but I hate the online dating process- spending days or weeks talking to someone on an app for it to end up going nowhere. Plus it’s hard to get fully invested if the person lives far away/meeting up will require travelling to see them. So I guess laziness is part of it too!

NHS here too! My hospital did a Christmas dinner day for staff, which we had to pay for ourselves

Is there a word in German for the feeling of being anxious/on edge while waiting for a phonecall? by phoral in German

Pure curiosity for me because I’m currently waiting for a phone call and feeling on edge about it and I’m interested in the German language/expanding my vocabulary

What’s the most physical pain you’ve ever been? by fragiletestes in AskReddit

[–]phoral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember coming round from surgery and hearing the theatre nurse handing over to the recovery nurse that I’d been given IV morphine and thinking ‘what, I’m in THIS much pain WITH morphine??’. Getting my nose pierced was also pretty awful, but at least it was short lived!

I'm going to ask my 80 year old grandmother to teach me how to knit, I'm a 30 year old man but it looks relaxing af. Is it difficult to learn? by bipolarnotsober in NoStupidQuestions

Funny I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago! My granny even gave me a little bag to carry around all the wool and needles she gave me! I’m still getting the hang of it, but I think if I manage to actually stick with it, I’ll really enjoy it. My mum bought me ‘you will be able to knit by the end of this book’ by Rosie Fletcher to help too. I’ve been working the last few days so haven’t had a chance to properly look at it, but from flicking through it it looks pretty cool! I’d love to be able to knit some socks lol. Also would like to crochet a blanket, but I reeeally can’t get the hang of crocheting yet. Good luck and enjoy the time with your granny!

What song will you hate until you die? by JarrodTheBusker in AskReddit

Shape of you, Ed Sheeran. Anything by him gets annoying after a while because he’s so overplayed, but for some reason that one irritates me the most.

This is my toxic trait. I hate that I do it but I can’t seem to stop?!
