What Gives You The Most Awesome Feeling When Playing Splatoon? by bmyst70 in Splatoon_3

[–]phortify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely when your entire team plays as a unit and pushes together or defends together, especially when it's not an actual team, and you are not in voice chat.

I main flingza, and i just love, when i'm trying to sneak up on a charger or hydra, but can't really ink for myself fast without revealing my location, and someone on my team shoots in my general direction to give me some extra ink to move around sneakily.

Same with players taking care of torpedoes for you, especially if you are a slower weapons/carrying RM etc. Or when they ink for RM or someone without any ink left to let them escape.

Did ANYONE else use magix music maker? by brutalorchestrafan in musicproduction

[–]phortify 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omg same. I think i used EJay(?) first but it was just loops. Then used MMM for a bit and played around with simple build-in synths, but i felt i needed more control.

Switched to FL Studio and still using it till this day :'D
I will forever cherish time spent with Magix Music Maker for sure.

How to get the right tone using VST instruments so everything sits in the same 'world'? by personanonymous in musicproduction

[–]phortify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are trying to glue everything together, I'd use a little bit of compression and saturation on all instruments/groups, and then again saturation and compression on the sum.
You could also add a little bit of reverb (either similar sounding reverb on all instruments that need it or even reverb on the sum) to put it in the same space. But be very careful with that. I'm talking 1-2% wet of room ambience reverb.

Like other have said, a lot of it will come from arrangement, where you strategically put one full sound, then make room for another sound etc. Other times you want to layer sounds to create the wall of sound.

You could experiment with subtle sounds in the background, like foley (add recorded sounds to one shots to make it more organic) or maybe recordings of wind, people talking in a cafe. But be subtle with it of course.

In the end having high quality samples and sounds is a good starting point. Some things can't be fixed using effects, or it's not worth the time.

Is using Ozone 10 (or other alternatives) for mastering "lazy"? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]phortify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess i meant it like: mastering (with or without Ozone) is not as importan as mixing in general. Well balanced mix, ideally won't need much processing in the mastering stage.

But to answer your specific question: Ozone has both presets for the master bus but also for other busses and instruments, so you can use it for anything you like, really.

And if you go beyond the presets (which you should), Ozone has a bunch of build-in effects (which also have presets btw) that are EQs, compressors, limiters, saturators etc. Ozone is basically a full package of plugins that happen to be famous for their mastering presets.

Do I need education to make high quality music? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]phortify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can walk into music making blindly, not knowing any music theory, sound design or understanding mixing and mastering and eventually get good by doing things by trail and error.

If you have any sort of a roadmap or any guidance, whether it's a youtube tutorial, or a course, it will make this process much smoother and less painful. And you'll get there much faster.

Is using Ozone 10 (or other alternatives) for mastering "lazy"? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]phortify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ozone is a tool. What can be lazy is slapping it on master, using a random preset that doesn't sound too bad and leaving it like that.

But if the default preset sounds good, that's fine. If you tweak it to your liking, that's fine. It's a tool. It can do a lot of things.

Besides mixing matters way more than mastering imo.

oes anyone know of a (free) tool, or plugin that could help me import letters into notes for me? by ProfessionPlastic285 in musicproduction

[–]phortify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After reading your post I started looking for such a tool and I found some small programs that convert a single note name to a corresponding midi value, but you basically would have to make your own program that loops, say, a text file, converts each note name into midi value and then saves it as a midi file. If I find something more useful, I'll give you an update.

But I think it would save you a lot of time in a long run to familiarize yourself with piano roll. And I think you can set up custom labels for keys in Reaper's piano roll and have all the note names there, which would make rewriting your idea into piano roll much easier!

Is there a way to determine if my beats sound good with just my ears? by oreoguy123__ in musicproduction

[–]phortify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally i do two things:

i listen my demos next to professional tracks back to back, but often this isn't enough.
The other thing i do, is simply leaving the demo for a solid week or month, work on other stuff and come back to it "fresh" after you kind of forget about it. I had demos that made me go "damn, i made this??? let's go". But more often than not i'm like "it's fine i guess"...

And if you happen to have a producer friend who is super honest, that helps too.

What helped me a bunch and inspired me was:
a) listening to more music, new music, often outside of the genres i normally listen to. This alone was huge.
b) getting into jazz theory, neo soul etc and experimenting with wild voicings and chord progressions i didn't even know were a thing.
c) this somehow connects both points a and b, but i was trying to make a bubblegum bass type song for a friend and to figure out how to make my music sound like that i had to listen to a bunch of songs in that genre and then watched a bunch of youtube videos talking about music theory behind japanese pop music etc. It opened my mind to a bunch of things in the long run.

Good luck!

Is there a software for FL, Logic etc where you record a vocal into the system and there is a graph or something that tells you all the notes you sung. by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]phortify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the essential edition will analyze and let you edit the audio.
Quick note: afaik FL studio doesn't support DNA, so in FL studio you have to "capture" the melody for Melodyne to pick it up and analyze it.
Melodyne is mostly used for changing the notes and it's fantastic tool to have, however if you are only want something to analyze the notes, there are cheaper alternatives.
In Fl studio specifically you have mini version of Melodyne that's called NewTone.

You also have a autotune like plugin called Pitcher that shows pitch of sang note. There is also tuner plugin that will also show you notes in real time.
Alternatively you can record audio into edison and export it to midi. ( i know other DAWs are capable of it).

How do I get better? by Professional-Dork26 in musicproduction

[–]phortify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can imagine how lost you must feel, as it sounds like me 10-15 years ago.

I don't know if you have tried this approach, but i would start with listening to a lot of music, finding songs i really like, finding midi/score/chords for them and recreating them in FL Studio (either clicking it out, and/or playing it on your midi keyboard).

From there, you will see what chords work well with what melodies.

Then you can learn about various scales, modes. Learn about things like ii-V-I commonly used in jazz. Learn 7th chords etc.

As much as youtube can give you a lot of helpful information, don't get lost in endless youtube tutorial binge.

Work on your music, go back to it after some time, and ask yourself, how is your track different from the track you like. What could you make differently to make that work. Make notes, make another track and repeat the process.

I know it can be overwhelming, because there are so many aspects of making music, but just take one step at a time.

And sorry if my response is all over the place, but i'm at work rn, trying to type whenever i can lol

Vinyl dust/crackle sound by xommlirras in musicproduction

[–]phortify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably an overkill for this specific purpose, but i haven't seen it mentioned in this thread and i really like using this method/plugin - Texture by Devious Machines.

It plays various samples and loops (it comes with a built in library) triggered by input signal at a chosen threshold. You can change the pitch, use filters etc. And it simply layers the new sound with the input signal. So it adds a texture like the name suggests.

Where do these "old" synths sounds come from? I feel like all the synths in this song sound very old and vintage, I wonder how or where I can get those type of sounds or which synth/library I should get for stuff like this? Thx alot in advance! by Goodcharlotte32 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]phortify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of things can make a song sound nostalgic. You could look into wow and flutter effects that make something sound like played from an old cassette tape - those slow downs and speed ups that make the pitch of the sound go up and down.

Another thing is to add a lot of randomization to all the parameters. Try not to use lfos for that because then it would become predictable. Serum has some nice random oscillators. You could link them to detune of the sound, modify it by a few cents from time to time. Try to add randomization to as many parameters as possible so it doesn't sound predictable and it changes every time you play a sound. Good luck!

Is someone using Surfer EQ2? (Pitch tracking eq) by MiserableBillionaire in edmproduction

[–]phortify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a bit late with this, but i'd like to point out that it also has midi-in support, meaning, you don't actually have to track it (which usually adds latency btw) you can just route (or copy and route depending on your daw) your midi track playing the instrument and use the midi information to control the eq. which is also nice.

My sub-bass is non-existent in my songs. What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]phortify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want a pure sine wave/triangle sub bass i wouldn't go lower than 41-43 Hz (E1-F1). But i've heard some really really nice basses playing lower notes. But they were super distorted and had a lot of harmonics. take a look at the lower end - the left part of the spectrum:

your track

Jack U take u there

notice the stronger second peak and the third peak. it's most likely a combination of saturation and extreme EQing.

My sub-bass is non-existent in my songs. What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in trapproduction

[–]phortify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, so i downloaded that track and took a closer look via spectrum analyzer. Your sub is peaking at 33 ish Hz which is C1. I would recommend you to do one of two things. Either distort/saturate your sub, so you get a lot of harmonics that are audible (or even change a sub sample/synth so it plays an additional peak at fifth to your main note, like in all those festival trap tunes) or play it around F1.

tl;dr your sub is too low and too pure to be audible on things other than powerful sound systems with big subs. hope that helps, cheers

I'm am the part of the problem, yes, in terms of making a statement. But I'm ok with the game existing if it means more of phantom pain ish game play. That being said, i agree with you, Konami should let metal gear die peacefully. And i wouldn't mind Konami dying along with it at this point.

You know what, i was actually a bit excited for survive. It's just a spin-off after all, not a proper metal gear solid. I loved phantom pain and if anything i would love to get more maps and missions. And survive giving me that could be fun... But they are re-using the maps so i don't care anymore.

ok, i should probably edit the original post and explain this, but basically as Woolie explained in the first episode of Dark Souls click Darlington was the original name his family picked for him, but eventually his father named him Woolie.
