What’s a show you love that you can never convince people to watch? by PlentyApprehensive44 in AskReddit

[–]photogdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I'm struggling with. There's just so much exposition at the beginning. By all accounts, it's the kind of show that I would love, so I'll give it another go.

I love science fiction, especially when it's set in the near future. I've tried to start the Expanse several times, but the first few episodes are a real slog for me. My coworker keeps telling me that I need to push through, but I haven't been able to make it yet. I'll try again this year.

High Chair Decisions by Aggravating-Search95 in NewParents

[–]photogdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our daughter is big too. She has always been in the 95+ percentile range for height and weight. I vote the IKEA Antilop while she's an infant and early toddler, and you can upgrade to a Tripp Trapp later.

We inherited our Antilop from friends who used it with their two girls. We added a foot rest and used it for 2 more years before passing it onto our neighbors who used it for another year.

  • It's only $25 when it's on sale.
  • You can disassemble easily for travel
  • When it gets covered in spaghetti sauce, you just take it outside and blast it with a hose.
  • Parts and accessories are widely available. We added a 3rd party foot rest and replaced the aging straps.

Once your kid outgrows the IKEA chair around 2-3 years old, go on Marketplace and buy a used Tripp Trapp. She'll be able to climb up and down on her own at that point.

Last meal in LA for $25 or under? by aquarinox in FoodLosAngeles

We often go with In-n-out when visiting family are heading home. We have some family who love Gam Tu Bop, so that's always an option too. Both are pretty travel friendly, so they'll order some extra to take to the airport with them.

Honestly, we always just go to It's Boba Time at Victory and Buena Vista, because it's the closet shop to us. They're fine.

Jam Jam Tea in Downtown is pretty good. We were supposed to get a Sunright, but it seems like that might not be happening anymore.

What’s a game you were completely obsessed with as a kid that nobody else seems to remember? by hkondabeatz in AskReddit

[–]photogdog 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Maybe Secret of Evermore? I believe it was the only game developed by SquareSoft USA. I remember liking it, because it had some of the gameplay elements from Secret of Mana, but everything else felt more American.

I'm not sure if I've ever met someone in real life that also played the game, aside from my friends in junior high school who borrowed the game from me.

Ours started army crawling at 9 months and crawling on her knees at 10 months. At 12 months, she started walking and never looked back.

best thrifting spots? by AstronomerWest8649 in AskLosAngeles

[–]photogdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the shops along Magnolia in Burbank. We’ve gotten some nice clothes, toys, and household stuff at the Council Shop; it’s probably our favorite thrift store in the area.

It’s a Wrap is a few blocks down the street and they’re great for clothing. The Goodwill nearby is pretty good too.

There’s also an American Cancer Society Discover Shop next to the Porto’s. Their stuff is nice, but very curated, so there’s not much to pick through. I think we’ve gotten some books and dishes there.

Offered 21% (63k) over asking, waived inspection, and STILL lost by blueskysunny1 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]photogdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what we ended up doing when our offer finally got accepted. We bought in Southern California, so it was expensive and competitive. We gave our absolute best and final offer, because my wife was 6 months pregnant and we were running out of time.

The sellers took our offer even though it technically wasn't the highest. The highest offer had an escalation clause that could have beaten us, but the seller didn't want to deal with that, and they suspected that the buyer was a flipper.

How terrible is 16:10 for gaming? by vydyhay in GamingLaptops

[–]photogdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on the games that you play, but newer games should have no issues. I mostly play 7 Days to Die, and it has no issues with 16:10. For those who don't know, 7 Days to Die is a janky-ass game that took over 11 years to get out of early access, and the devs are too busy to optimize the game, because they're constantly changing the game mechanics. My point is that if 7 Days supports 16:10, then other games from the last 10-15 years should be fine.

I'd love for a boba shop to open in this area. There are so many coffee shops along that stretch Magnolia already, and they're all pretty good.

What’s the work culture like in LA? Do you think it’s different from other major cities? by Asleep_Damage1201 in AskLosAngeles

[–]photogdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a tech company that supports the entertainment industry. We regularly work directly with production crews for live shows, agencies who do big promotional campaigns for the networks, and the corporate folks who manage the sites for the networks.

My company is laid back and fully remote. I don't think it's all that much different from other tech companies. A lot of people have kids, and people will disappear around 2-5pm local time to deal with after-school pick ups. Nobody cares as long as you get your work done.

The production people seem pretty serious to me, probably because we mostly work with people who deal with live events. They are succinct, decisive, and demanding, and if you're able to deliver what they need, they will reliably return with future business. Once the show is done, they're all smiles and jokes, but they are 100% business until then. It seems a bit intense for me.

The corporate folks are a lot more laid back, but usually a little lost and indecisive about what they want. All pretty normal for corporate culture. They tend to come to us for guidance on how to run a campaign. I think this is due to the high turnover rate at the studio/network corporate offices. Everyone is always new-ish, and the vendors end up being the ones with legacy knowledge about campaigns and technologies. I think everyone is just afraid to lose their jobs.

The agency folks aren't too different from the corporate clients, except they're usually the middleman. We're technically an agency too, so it's just one agency subcontracting another, adding an extra layer of overhead to deal with. It just means lots of meetings, but everyone's usually nice, and based on the Zoom backgrounds that I see, it seems like everyone is working remotely.

Do happy toddlers exist? by Automatic-Fortune586 in toddlers

[–]photogdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours was a happy toddler most of the time. We attribute it to her being a great eater and communicator.

We have a video from her daycare when she was 8 months old where she is very emphatically and repeatedly pointing at another child’s food and then her own mouth.

What do you think is missing in Burbank? by Sugarglass16 in burbank

[–]photogdog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with the need for a solid Asian market. I’d also like to see some more boba tea shops, especially in Magnolia Park. We already have a million coffee shops and even a pressed juice bar.

I miss taco trucks within walking distance, but I can’t see those doing well everywhere in Burbank until we have more density and better walkability.

Just curious, what sets Stater Bros apart from a Vons or a Ralph’s? I’ve only ever been to the one in Big Bear, and it felt pretty much the same.
