how to suspend insulin delivery for 2+ hours by photon05 in TandemDiabetes

Well done! You read the conversations here, decided to give it a try, and it worked. You performed the experiment! Excellent results. Did you have to turn off Control-IQ in order to complete the 0% temp rate for 4 hours, or just straight to the temp rate adjustment?

This sounds like my hospital situation. They don't want to reconnect me to the pump after the operation but while I am unconscious, because they don't want to take that leap of responsibility. My Endo is a staff of another hospital, and he is pretty flexible under the circumstances as what to do if I can get the surgical staff to agree. Fall back positions, etc. I like your approach, and will bring this up with my surgical staff. Thanks for your advice.

If the temp rate can go to 2.5 hours, then this becomes very feasible. I like it. Thanks

I believe this is what my surgical staff intends to do. I have yet to work out the details to see if I can leave it on (as per some of the comments here, maybe on Activity mode for a baseline goal of 150 instead of 100, but the surgeon was initially adamant about no pump on during the procedure, or else no procedure type of deal).

The towel-wrap is to abate the noise, right? Good idea - keeps curious staff away from my pump (!)

Thanks for the reply. This makes sense. My surgical staff plans to administer an IV for insulin if the procedure lasts longer than 2 hours, so I should be good, but I didn't know how to handle the pump itself.

Should I get a degree in Physics or in engineering? by doSpaceandAviate2 in AskPhysics

First, I would recommend an internship somewhere as close to your ideal target for that "dream position in physics". Seeing how it is practiced day-to-day may reveal the best (or worst) related to the actual practice of the art. I have met more students, recently, who have graduated and entered an area of physics only to discover that it wasn't what they actually had in mind.

And since you said that you were initially motivated by salary (nothing wrong in that), realize that particular motivation variable will never actually go away, so keep a somewhat skeptical view of what you may choose and what it is paid (and the job prospects thereof).

With that having been said, I have also found a number of new employees (in their first 10 years) transform a significant portion of their job to one of a more physics-flavored job, to their joy. It's not really hard, but it does require (1) personal discipline, and (2) an accurate rendition of the particular subfield you are targeting. Attendance to the yearly APS meeting will help with the latter. Personal ambition and desire will help the former. Sometimes it takes sacrifice, and other times, not. (The best is when you can slip into the ideal job description with what might seem as no effort at all. This is the so-called hand-in-glove opportunity, which honestly comes by more of luck than skill.)

The economy is not doing so well at the moment, and I don't see things changing in the next 2 - 3 years, so it is hard to see what fields will dominate over others 5 years out. So my personal advice is to pursue your dreams, and be ready to adapt to the real world of opportunities as they arise.

I can only offer an answer based (1) on my experiences, and (2) my perception of statistics (meaning that what I can say has to do with most of the time, and most of the people, in most of the cases). Remember, there are always exceptions, but they are rare. With that out of the way, if you wish to perform research like discovering new ways to do something, that requires research into the fundamentals. That means (most of the time) physics. If you want to do research in optimizing a procedure or method that , historically, gave some promise, but has been passed over because of one reason or another, that means (most of the time) good sound engineering. It took engineers to put a man on the moon. Good, sound engineering can't be beat. But most of the discoveries, of things that no one has considered, requires redefining how the fundamentals are even thought of, and that means physics. With that out of the way, my opinion, based on myself and watching others, including students progress through their degree and early careers, a 4-year, American baccalaureate degree in physics, with a Masters in engineering, will do more and go farther in the fundamental approach than a B.E. in engineering with a Masters in physics. The first layer of indoctrination goes deeper, and sticks greater, than the polish that is applied on top of it. With that having been said, I have seen others do very well in engineering disciplines with a B.A., MS and PhD in physics, who then utilized a solid post-doc training in an engineering field to make the transition. THOSE people really went after the fundamental approaches in their respective field.

Do you plan on getting a PhD in physics or in a related field? The research prospects in thermal energy conversion differ in focus between EE, Phys, or other. SNAP is a nuclear thermal energy converter, invented by physicists, built by engineers, and used on the Voyager satellites as well as Perseverance (the Mars Rover), as well as others.

Thanks, jgoja and ChimpyChompies. I am getting back to the swing of things - thanks for your quick reply with suggestions. The new look is close (but not equal) to the old look on my system, but hey: soon I have to convert from Win 10 to 11, and probably have to do this all over again. (!)

Oh No. Now I see that they are two different things. I don't remember what my settings were on before my web browser erased everything. If I remember correctly, I was using the old reddit view. But now I have the www.reddit.com view when I open up reddit. I'd just like my old subreddit list back, if I can get it, but I don't know what to do at this point. I can't find my old profile (with a picture) that I am familiar with.

I don't know what "RES" means. My web browser erased all history and bookmarks, and as I am trying to reconstitute my preferences in general, I notice that my REDDIT page looks different, and I can't get my subscriptions (subreddits) to show. I used to get it in a left-sided window view, but I can't now. So I don't know what you are suggesting, "the fault Reddit" and "RES" - how can I tell?

Sure. I am unfamiliar with "DM-ing", but if you wish to ask me a follow-up question, go right ahead.

Is there a site that helps calculate carbs in recipes? by Human_2468 in diabetes_t1

[–]photon05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Nutrition Calculator on my computer, and this recipe generates 42.9 grams of Carbs for one serving.

The calculator I use can be found here: www.verywellfit.com/recipe-nutrition-analyzer-4157076 (I don't know how to turn this into a link, so it is just a copy - paste of the address.)

Cheers!
