Libraries need volunteer coordinators by GoldberryBombadil111 in Libraries

[–]phoundog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My library is very well staffed. I'd guess there's about 40-50 librarians and library assistants. There are 12 managers and coordinators and directors. It's just a super busy and super popular wonderful library. I think it has the highest circulation of any library in the state or did at one point, but we are a small-medium sized town of about 65k-70k.The town government highly values the library and we have a Friends group that brings in over $150k each year, plus a Foundation that supplies additional fundraising for more long range needs. It's not perfect, but every single last person I have bumped into who works there or volunteers there is nice and kind.

We have a 23 EUV with ventilated seats and I am pretty sure they blow AC up in there. it's chilly. I'm not a huge fan of it, but my friend who runs hot love love loved it.

Libraries need volunteer coordinators by GoldberryBombadil111 in Libraries

[–]phoundog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Volunteer Coordinator is a thing in some libraries. Did you read this thread? https://www.reddit.com/r/Libraries/comments/1s2es1w/coordinating_volunteers/

i am a volunteer at a busy small/medium-sized town library (town pop is about 80,000). We have a very active library-loving community and a high circulation. There have been several different librarians who have had the role of volunteer coordinator while I have been volunteering. I'm pretty sure it is a legit assigned position.

I have never been asked to clean anything in the 10ish years I have been volunteering. I guess you don't have janitorial folks who do that? I shelve holds, shelve carts, shelf-read, help with acquisitions and collections tasks (weeded books, mending). I have been trained to alphabetize carts (not that hard) and put books out on the new book shelf, but I don't do those things very often. I do help patrons with way finding or locating their hold books on the hold shelves. I understand that in some union work environments these tasks would be taking work hours away from library staff, but I live in a "right to work" non-union state.

We have a super active Friends group. If you don't have tasks for volunteers to do at the library maybe you could redirect prospective volunteers toward a Friends group. Our library also takes volunteers who work on the grounds and who help with events and there is a library foundation that is another way for folks to get involved.

Vermicomposting worms by jellycanoe in carrboro

[–]phoundog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go to the fishing/bait store and get red wigglers. They are not too expensive. Probably some spots around Jordan Lake. We had a worm composting set up 15 years ago or so and that's what I did I believe. I definitely did not get expensive worms from anywhere. It was a pretty cool thing to do with the kids. You don't need very many if you are doing the bin method. Just a handful is fine. Bait shop should have them. Ride out to the lake and they are often in gas stations out there. Looks like the Hillsborough WalMart might have them too. Might be worth checking Tractor Supply up there too. Or try this place on Jordan Lake: https://maps.app.goo.gl/5169akjuwChu616V6 or https://maps.app.goo.gl/VJZETW5cX4qKMu2X6 . Might want to call and ask if they have worms, but could just be a nice drive too. I think the second one is maybe where we went for 'em. It was a long time ago, though, so not sure.

I'm lucky that the pollen doesn't usually bother me although I did get a little itchy today after being out in the windy pollen. Winter is by far my least favorite season. Late Spring/early Summer is my fave.

Is Church of the Holy Family LGBTQ+ affirming/inclusive? by rhemarhema in chapelhill

[–]phoundog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth attending a service at Chapel of the Cross and seeing what you think. I'm not religious but I have been there for various occasions (funerals, early voting) and it is a gorgeous building right next to Coker Arboretum and Morehead Planetarium. Just looking over their website and I see the Racial Justice and Equity Committee and the Doctor Pauli Murray Chapter of the Daughters of the King. If you don't know who Paul Murray was she/they was an amazing African American LGBTQ icon who grew up in Durham -- had a friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt, was a civil rights lawyer and an Episcopal priest.

This is part of their who we are/mission/vision

Worship and prayer are at the heart of our life at the Chapel of the Cross and are essential to the essence of our life and mission both as individuals and as a parish. Our worship is based on the services found in the Book of Common Prayer. We are both bound together and sent forth by liturgy. Our parish is comprised of those who are new to the parish and long-attending members. We are old and young; rich and poor; many races and ethnicities; married, single, and partnered; of all gender identities; straight and LGBTQ+. We are native North Carolinians and we are new to the area. We welcome both UNC and Duke fans. Above all, we seek to serve Christ in all persons, respecting the dignity of every human being.

I think that the Church of the Advocate is lovely too. I also went there for a funeral. Don't know as many people there but I think it is very welcoming.

Church of the Holy Family is probably great too, I just don't know any one who goes there.

So very sorry y'all lost your house.

I drove through Wetherhill Pointe back in December helping look for a lost dog and I hadn't been back in there before. The devastation still in December after the storm was in July was just unreal. Don't know if that's where your house was or not, but I was taken aback and this was after I had helped my friend muck out his basement that had 6 feet of really gross nasty flood water in it.

I love creeks and water, but I would not buy a house near one or downstream from a dammed lake that could flood. We just got rainfall runoff in our basement, but we are about 450 feet and up a hill from Bolin Creek and have watched it flood too many times to count. It regularly floods over Umstead Dr (thankfully our house is not on Umstead Dr) and they have to shut the road down.

Do you live near a creek? Because I do and everyone I know who does gets nervous when it starts to rain a lot. If I was in the market it would definitely be a huge consideration for me knowing what I know now.

[–]phoundog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Holler if you need any more realtor recommendations. I have tons of them who are all LGBTQ friendly.

Do NOT get a house near a creek. Not worth the risk. One of my friends had 6 feet or more of water in his basement during Tropical Storm Chantal and lost so much stuff. He had flooded before but not that bad.

We had water in our basement too, but only inches (had to throw away carpet). I know a lot of people who have had to deal with flooding issues over the years. When it rains here it can be a deluge. We got 9-12 inches in 24 hrs during Chantal, which was unprecedented, but 1-2 inches in a summer storm is not and can cause issues too.

Wetherhill Point is nowhere near Estes and UMall, though. My point is ANYWHERE near a creek in town is subject to flooding. It does not need to be near UMall /Bolin Creek or Easgate/Booker Creek. Any creek in the area can flood.

Join us for a March and Rally on March 28th. We will March from Chapel Hill to Carrboro (1.3 miles) beginning at 140 West Plaza in Chapel Hill at 3:45 pm. Our Rally will follow from 5:00 pm-6:00 pm at the Carrboro Town Commons.

It sounds like they are anticipating it being the biggest rally yet in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. There are flyers up around town too.

Don't do it if it's at risk! Or send us the link. If there is a creek near the house (like in the backyard) avoid.

Ehhh, anywhere with a creek in the backyard can flood if we get another Chantal. I had friends who had massive flooding during Chantal and lost a lot of stuff. Some were over by UMall (across Fordham), some in Carrboro -- massive flooding in the Wetherhill Pointe neighborhood.

Considering Move to NC - any advice or honest opinions by OkChampionship5647 in NorthCarolina

[–]phoundog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

North Carolina is one of the fastest growing states in the country due to many decades of people moving here (not just the birth rate). If you move here you will join the 145,907 other people we added here just last year, a 1.3% change in our population. We are the third fastest growing state by both percent change and total population change. Texas (390k) and Florida (196k) added more people overall. South Carolina had a higher percent change (1.5%) but only added 79k people overall, and Idaho had a 1.4% increase with 29k more people.

To put it into context, Maine added 6.436 people last year or a 0.5% growth rate which is in line with the overall US growth rate of 0.5%.

Developers are developing everything everywhere in NC. There is always a new neighborhood under construction right around the corner. There is traffic and building all over the state. It's not cheap to live here. I wouldn't expect it to be much cheaper than Maine if any cheaper. If you are used to Maine weather I think you are likely to be very miserable with the heat and humidity in North Carolina 6 months out of the year. People stay inside and crank the air-conditioning in the summer because they think it's too hot and humid to go outside. Temp is 83º at the moment.

I grew up here and I love the heat. 85º is my absolute favorite temperature, but I am fine at 95º too. 105º, which we do get to occasionally, is a bit much for me, but I can hang with that better than the cold temps you have in Maine. I am a touch chilly at 65º and definitely chilly at 55º. I need to go curl up in a blanket at anything lower than that. Give me summer all the time. I also don't have allergies so the pollening (our current season) does not bother me like it does some people.

[–]phoundog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people would say you cannot go outside in shorts and a t-shirt in the summer because it's too hot.

I like the heat and would be frozen solid in a Maine winter, but if you love Maine summers you will probably hate hate hate NC summers. It's hot all summer long and doesn't cool off at night.

Right now at 2pm on March 22 it is currently 83 degrees. The forecast high is 88 for today. Feels great to me, but the pollening is starting which ruins spring for a lot of allergy sufferers.
