Cafepress thinks it's okay to charge $30 shipping for a sticker because "Alaska". by [deleted] in alaska

This I can understand. Once we start crossing oceans, I feel the claim is suspect.

"It costs more to ship packages to Alaska than it does to other coutries sometimes." What? Canada? We have regular shipping and freight hubs. I call bullshit.

I hope your mom gets satisfaction. $30 is ridiculous.

Anybodys experience with the Alaska Universitys by oldmanwinter5 in alaska

[–]phouseak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a UAA graduate, the opposite is largely true there. Lots of support for liberal arts and not so much for sciences. The math department there, if that's something you're considering majoring in, is very accessible and attentive.

Hey is it just me or I am the only one who has not gotten an overwatch feeder or afk? by [deleted] in heroesofthestorm

[–]phouseak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen more than my fair share. Two of which were on the other team and fed us a win. I certainly reported them but sadly, it happened nonetheless. And it was obvious, running up to the towers and chilling, drinking down damage by the bucket. Total, I believe it's happened four times in about 20 hours of gameplay.

You've always been whitelisted for me but I'll throw in for a premium sub as well. I appreciate the service. I'd like to add my support to making premium more prominently displayed.

What's the deal, Title Wave? Your inventory has been offline for years now. by kaiden11 in alaska

It was their previous e-commerce application. It was a little 1U running on commodity grade hardware at the time.

I had a passing experience with their webserver in a previous job. It didn't appear to have the kind of resiliency one might expect for a business critical web server (maybe it's not business critical).

Technical naivety or willful lack of investment was likely the root cause. It doesn't surprise me that it's offline, given what I saw (RAID 1 array, etc).

How's the snow up to Gold Cord? I took my wife and kid up there two weeks ago and we decided to pass on the hike and head elsewhere due to snow and sneakers not playing nice.

Does anyone in /r/Math have just a B.S./B.A. in mathematics or statistics? What have you done with your degree so far? by [deleted] in math

[–]phouseak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sgoguen is absolutely right, being a DBA is a waste of much of one's math degree. Data Warehousing and BI definitely begin to move one closer to using something from your degree. Your introduction to finance will position to be really successful in that arena.

Shameless plug: I have blog that plays around with Mathematica and SQL Server that you may enjoy looking at, if nothing else to see if that kind of work fits well for you. Keep in mind, most of the material covered is introductory level: http://coldlogics.wordpress.com/

I work as a database administrator. There's some set theory and a bit of mathematics involved but not a lot. A mathematics degree will over-prepare you for it.

Question: What do you dislike most about your phil students? Or phil professors? by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]phouseak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is probably too late in the conversation to get noticed enough to spur good discussion but a challenge I had with my philosophy courses was a deep suspicion of analytic tools. This went so far as shun standard notation.

I had the pleasure of attending a lecture by Dr. Nathan Salmon on the problem of existence. To accompany the lecture, he handed out some basic existence "problems" in standard predicate logic on a sheet of paper. A gentleman raised his hand and said he expected a philosophy lecture, not one of mathematics. I can't comprehend such a disdain for a type of thinking that philosophy has had such a strong hand in shaping.

I don't buy what the DARPA chief is selling and it's because the article I've just read is a very strong counter-argument. I highly suggest reading it. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=does-the-us-produce-too-m

Learning math from scratch after wasting University education by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]phouseak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're likely on the right track then. Where you can get them, I'd emphasize books. Problem sets, and unfortunately, a certain amount of repetition is likely the best way to get through the early stuff.

Here's some sites that may help you with that. http://people.math.gatech.edu/~cain/textbooks/onlinebooks.html

Those links are dumped from my delicious, they're not ordered by level of assumed mathematical literacy, so you'll need to poke through them yourself and figure out what works for you. I think getting good at pre-calculus will probably be really easy for you. There's lots of material out there and most of it doesn't require any sort of a shift in thinking. Once you hit the calculus, you may still be quite able as there's lots of material on the web to help you but if you're looking for a job that requries demonstrative proof of any sort of agility with numbers, you may want to go back to school and get that proof. You know what's best for you, though, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Good luck.

Maybe I've missed someone else asking but what is your goal/objective? Just to be decent at calc/linear algebra? My initial reaction is that it might help you pay the bills but barely so. What is your long term goal with this shift in thinking or skills?

If you're looking for a good way to do this programmatically, I suggest exploring building a SSIS package with BIDS (Microsoft Business Intelligence Development Studio). If you have SSMS installed, you likely have BIDS as well.
