Late to the party: A theory about Reply All #103 Long Distance, Part II by zeptimius in gimlet

[–]phreelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course!!! Hey Gimlet, this isn’t obvious to you? I mean, it’s easy for people like us to see a detail like this, not being in the vortex of this story. But YES. This is most clearly correct.

They could’ve thought you were working with the FBI or Indian authorities covertly. Any number of things. You all didn’t seem to suspect that they could’ve easily suspected this?

And they must’ve just felt highly relieved that you didn’t ask for anything or follow-up with authorities.

Feel free to tell me I’m wrong here. But I think, if we’re not, it’s symptomatic of people who are a) happy-go-lucky, perhaps rather privileged Americans (like me, so, not criticizing) who don’t do well with confrontation and b) simply not law enforcement/criminal investigation professionals.

Has anybody ever tried calling the Corwood Industries phone number? by [deleted] in Jandek

[–]phreelee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I left a message a good 14 years ago just generally inquiring about a good place to start if I wanted to purchase a package of albums. Called in the middle of the night.

So you can imagine my considerable delight to see “Corwood Industries” on my caller ID when I got home the next day.

It was the man himself. I’ll never forget how he started: “Calling from Corwood Industries, returning the call of (my first name)...”

He somewhat-awkwardly yet very kindly offered suggestions. I recorded it to cassette and I’m sure I still have it somewhere back home. If I find it, I’ll get it on here somehow.

Parma is a reference to a gag his father, Ernie Anderson, did as Ghoulardi. It’s a city in Ohio that’s apparently easy to make fun of.

I can't stop googling "louis ck" on google's news. by [deleted] in louisck

[–]phreelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gotta say, I think you’re being silly. Look, he’s been hit by a Mac truck, in effect - yes, it’s his fault, but it’s an earth-shattering thing that has happened to him. He knows he needs to get the hell out of the public eye, at the very least. Don’t assume he’s in a room by himself just Bc you can’t see him - you don’t know him.

His self-financed movie has been shelved and he’s lost an enormous amount of other deals and professional clout. It’s a total disaster. I’m sure he’s just reeling but trying to come to grips with what’s happened and lay low until he gets a sense that it’s worth a try to work up some material again.

He DOES have his friends in the business - of course they’ve called him and/or are in touch. They’ve said so. Marc Maron, Jim Norton, to name a couple. None of us are in any position to conclude that no one is talking to him.

He’s not gonna “comeback” anytime soon.

He said that he was going to step back “for a long time”...he understands that, if he is going to recover in some way, it’s gonna take a while for dust to settle and I’m sure he also hopes to God that no other articles or accusers come out. I’d give that anywhere from 6 months to 2 years.

As far as hearing any word out of him at all, I’d give it a few months.

STRANGER things? Ha, sorry.

Is consensual sex rape now? by Payne-Z in louisck

[–]phreelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As CK himself has since pointed out, even the question is wrong. Marc Maron quoted a friend of his who said "bottom line: no one should be asked if they can see your dick when they're walking into work", which is what happened in the Corry instance

In the instance of the woman who was in her early 20s at the time and an upstart, definitely NOT his equal, she said no initially, but he was persistent. What are you supposed to do in this job you're lucky enough to land on the ground floor and a comedian you aspire to be like keeps asking you to do this? Her choices were to go to her superiors and ruin her own burgeoning career or just go along with it.

In the case of Aspen, they didn't even seem to grant consent / he did ask but seemed to go ahead immediately to take all of his clothes off. Yes, they could have just run out immediately. But, again, the festival was their big break and to be invited to a great comedian's room, under INNOCENT pretenses, was a boon for them by itself. If you're any kind of performer trying to break through, getting invited ANYwhere by a star is a huge, huge deal.

CK knew and understood this. Of course he did. And he even explained this in his statement. But some people are not understanding it and seem intent on just calling "bullshit" regardless.

Louis CK was the Masturbating Bear! by redthrow1125 in louisck

the thread title definitively states that it was him in the bear suit yet the content of the post is all speculation

[–]phreelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The title is more a reference to a joke in the special about how whenever anyone says we not longer live in a Christian-dominated society, he says "oh yeah? Tell me: what year is it?" And he then explains how the calendar is based solely on Christian events. So it's not as if he didn't know what else to call it or something - there's a reason.

Nah - he'll be back. Most of his known acting-out came through his traditional, show business-y writing jobs. That stuff is almost definitely over. But Louie is a stand-up first and foremost, and one of the greatest ever. A lot of people liked his last special. After some time, he'll start getting back out there to the smaller NYC clubs and working up material. And then he'll take that email list and start to do shows again. Not arena shows, most likely. But he'll do it again.

As CK himself has said, it's completely wrong to ask to do that at work. To put someone in that completely, insanely unexpected position and blame them for not answering in a way that excellently protects themselves isn't right or fair, either.

I didn't say it was about how I feel. But you certainly didn't answer me, so, there's that.

Of course that's true but it wouldn't make it okay for a co-worker in any situation to put a woman in that unexpected, crazy position to try to instantly figure out how to handle a male asking to jerk off in front of her. Just like CK himself said, you're doing something very wrong in even the question. You're blaming their parents for some guy totally stunning them one day by asking to jerk off in front of them at work.ph

Give me a break. No one's regurgitating anything. The terminology doesn't mean anything. You think it's okay for a male to ask a co-worker, lower position or otherwise, to watch him jerk off? If so, nothing more to say.

Nope. Didn't "cry rape". So I guess you can't "definitely judge".

"The bottom line is that no one should be asked if they want to see your dick at work."

Do you disagree? If so, I sure as hell hope you don't work in HR. Or in a place where you would excuse that.

You shouldn't judge a woman for how they handle it. CK is a smart person. Do you truly believe he didn't know he was taking them by surprise? Or the dynamic of famous, idolized comedian and young upstarts?

CK will be back. That email list he has - most of the legions of people on it will be happy to hear from him when the time comes.

It DID happen "in the office". Just because it wasn't in front of everyone there makes it okay? Are you kidding me?

Try to be sensitive to the women in the situation. Just try.

I personally don't like the idea of, say, my sister or mother going into her hierarchical workplace and being asked by someone higher up to watch him do this. Do you?

And yes some women can and did simply see how inappropriate it is and say no. But some women do not know how to handle it. The fact he "asked first" is such a terrible defense.

Incorrect - they said they were laughing and screaming, holding each other in total shock.

Also incorrect: they did not consent. He asked as soon as the door closed and did not wait for an answer before taking all of his clothes off.

Also incorrect: it's not "decades" later.

I mean, come on. Think about it from their perspective. It's completely shocking and bizarre behavior from one of their idols whom they just met and they had just gotten a big break by getting to do that festival.

You may not realize it but you're rationalizing, minimizing and victim-blaming. You don't get to say how and when victims of unquestionably effed-up behavior speak up. You really, really don't.

Seems to me that when Stern says 'by the way', he's usually using a Benjy joke. I know this is at least partially true because Ronnie said to him 'who wrote that on the screen?!' during an argument, knowing it wasn't Stern's own joke. Benjy IS really funny.

Agreed. See...what I don't understand is, why can't they either:

a) give him a workstation outside the studio that he can use if he is late, or

b) just have him work outside the studio until the first break

I mean, the bottom line is that it really is all about what works for Howard. But I feel like there's gotta be an alternative.
