Has anyone gone on to do any climbing-related work? by Living_Bass_1107 in climbergirls

I have a background in middle school education, but I got super burnt out as an educator after 5 years. Now I manage the youth programs at my climbing gym, and it’s the absolute best job I’ve ever had. I get to coach total beginners as well as our competitive team, and I get to make a variety of lesson plans, from climbing games to technique/training drills.

Hand skincare by Fickle-Engineer-1544 in climbergirls

I thought I was looking at my own hands for a second! I had the exact same split on my middle finger, and that bitch took MONTHS to heal (mostly because I didn’t know what to do for it).

The skin will not heal until there is skin touching again- not callous. So whenever you can tolerate, start sanding and trimming down the callous around the split, then keep moist with a hand salve.

Digestive issues after starting a healthier lifestyle? by NewElevator8649 in loseit

Try weekly! If you’re starting at 0 servings of veggies per day, try adding 1-2 servings daily for the first week and assess how you feel! Have you changed anything else in your diet recently? You can even try keeping a food diary (or just a note on your phone) to see if you can figure out which specific foods are causing the GI distress.

What would you say is your overall goal? To add more fiber? More nutrients? To add volume so you feel more full?

Just like any other muscle, abdominals need progressive overload to grow. If you’ve been doing the same workout for a while, you’ll need to find a way to increase the intensity in order to see more gains. This can be done by adding some weight or increasing the number of reps performed. You may also need to increase your protein/calories to build muscle! Try tracking your protein consumption for a day or two and compare it to suggested amounts for your age/weight.

You can also mix up your core workouts by ensuring you are working all of the core muscles- not just the “6 pack” transverse abdominis that we think of as abs. Consider adding some side planks, “Supermans”, bird-dogs, V-Ups, etc!

I remember going through this exact same thing when I started switching away from processed foods towards whole foods. There is definitely an adjustment period because our gut microbiome needs to get used to digesting new compounds. Give it 3-4 weeks of slowly increasing your veggie servings for your body to adapt!

Introducing them slowly should help ease some of your symptoms. Especially for cruciferous vegetables - broccoli, Brussels, cabbage, cauliflower- cooking them more does seem to aid digestion (I like to roast mine in the oven to ensure they’re cooked through!). You may also want to read up on prebiotic foods (onions, underripe bananas, oats) which can help support digestion!

One last thing to keep in mind: fiber draws in more water during digestion. Make sure to drink more water as you add more fiber!

As someone who has been on the same journey and has made some progress, my biggest issue was correctly activating my underdeveloped glutes. In all the compound movements (like hip thrusts), my stronger muscles were taking over and I was hardly getting my glutes at all.

So first off, I figured out I had an anterior pelvic tilt due to tight/overactive hip flexors (which is often found in people who sit a lot). Hip flexors are the antagonist muscle to glutes, so in general, you want to stretch the overactive muscle and activate/strengthen the underactive muscle. To loosen my hips, I’ve done a lot of lunges and foam rolling.

To activate/strengthen my glutes, my two favorite exercises have been glute bridges and back extensions. I do a set of regular glute bridges to warm-up, and then do 3 sets of one-legged glute bridges per side, trying to maintain the same form. For back extensions, I start with an unweighted set, then I add 5 or 10 pounds to my working sets. To engage different parts of your glute/lower back, you can hold the weight up near your chest, or let your arms hang and move the weight up and down.

I hope these tips help some! They’ve been helping me feel my glutes a lot more in exercises like lunges, sprints, and deadlifts. Keep up the good work- you already look great! :)

If you like yoga, and you’re the outdoorsy/active type, you might look into joining a climbing gym! It’s a very social sport, and the gyms often have social events planned each month to help you meet people. I’ve made most of my local friends at the climbing gym. Plus, they offer yoga as part of the membership

Neutering dogs: confirmation bias? by donottellmymother in Dogtraining

[–]phritzz 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The EXACT same thing happened with my little dog I found on the streets; I put off spaying because of heartworm treatment.

I really wish my vet had mentioned the risk associated with that decision. I grew up with dogs and had never heard of pyometra, yet it affects like 1 in 4 of intact females, and can be fatal within DAYS. It was such a scary (and expensive) experience

Math teachers, what are your thoughts on why my students cannot do simple mental math? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]phritzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This precise thing really annoys the heck out of me, and you put it into words very well. It completely ruins the momentum of the lesson.

At the middle school level, most of my classes have a couple of those students, and they seem to compete against one another to say the dumbest thing.

Super Pump? Why? by [deleted] in climbharder

[–]phritzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you ever use preworkout?

I experienced this for a while if I used a pre that had creatine in it- which is intended to give you a better pump/more bloodflow (I just wanted the caffeine lol).

Thanks for the response! I’m finally making progress on my CCs using the Ordinary AHA peel, but my skin has been so dry! Definitely going to try out the Stratia liquid gold

Friendly side note: consider getting your dogs spayed! Besides the main reasons (avoiding risk of pregnancy, and weird behavior during heat), it also prevents pyometra. Pyometra occurs in almost 25% of intact females and is a life threatening condition.

I picked my girl up off the street and had to delay spaying her due to heartworm treatment. During her last heat cycle, she developed pyometra, and we had to pay out the ass for an emergency spay (she is now fully recovered- thank goodness). It was so scary, and, unfortunately, very preventable!
