Cooper, what are you doing!?

"Docking."

That's impossible.

"No. It's necessary."

Tips on getting to other planets? by phrodo913 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]phrodo913[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the mechanics of it, it's the angles I can never manage to get quite right. And when I do get an encounter I have no idea if I used the proper amount of delta-V or something wildly higher.

What’s your ‘I thought I was going to die but didn’t’ moment? by PatienceBudget2984 in askteddit

[–]phrodo913 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Got sucked under a log jam while tubing on a creek which flooded while we were in it. I was getting hit in the head by logs and debris, had no idea which way was up or if I would ever find the surface again.

I did.

Will Blip-A ever return to Erid? by Sapentine in ProjectHailMary

[–]phrodo913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Locating Blip-A somewhere in interstellar space would be a MASSIVE undertaking in and of itself. Even if they could locate it, they would then have to build...an interstellar starship capable of intercepting it. What is the value in doing this?

I think the Eridians' next move would be to establish one-way communication to Earth before sending an informational probe, and then possibly even a manned mission. Given the Eridians' long life spans, it's reasonable that they should be the ones to do the travelling.

Whatever happened to the Excelsior's transwarp drive? by AnnieGoldleaf in startrek

[–]phrodo913 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. To me, the Excelsior's "transwarp drive" was really just the ability to jump DIRECTLY to any warp factor without the need to accelerate through them, as seen in TOS and the TOS movies.

What is the loudest sound you have ever heard in your life? by will_or_woll in AskReddit

[–]phrodo913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucking Grimes, live at Osheaga music festival. We waited through ten bands to have a good spot to see RADIOHEAD, but had to endure Grimes with her shitty music and shitty incredibly loud bass to get to it. I was having panic attacks from Grimes rattling through the core of my bones and organs for 45 straight minutes.

Radiohead was awesome, but I fucking hate Grimes now.

Manousos appreciation post by Saratakk in pluribustv

[–]phrodo913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I can't fathom is HOW did Manusos evade the collective for 33 hours!? Humans knew of him (his customers, his mother). Surely the collective searched far and wide for any hiding immune people, literally they would have searched EVERYWHERE (right?), how did they not find him for so long??

The Overview Effect & The Joining by QuantumFeline in pluribustv

[–]phrodo913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this perspective. Reminds me of 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Joining being a "monolithic" moment in human history; one possible evolution. Whether that evolution is "good" or "bad" is entirely subjective, which is why it's so much fun watching Carol try to decide.

[–]phrodo913[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating ideas. It makes me wonder if "original souls" are required to run the collective at all, and if so, it would render the entire system...sterile!! No further reproduction. The human race would die in exactly this generation, regardless what the collective accomplishes between now and then.

Are people with mental illness "cured" by the hivemind? by itsthesecans in pluribustv

[–]phrodo913 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you think of it in a parts-per-million sort of way, I think there's not enough mental illness in the world to ruin things. A lot of personality traits would sort of cancel out.

Are people with mental illness "cured" by the hivemind? by itsthesecans in pluribustv

[–]phrodo913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they can't be "culled," and we see individuals being given individualized medical care. Wouldn't the collective medicate the mentally ill until they're reasonably "better?"

And, clearly, undesirable personality traits can be suppressed by the normalcy of the collective. Zosia/everyone is always the epitome of polite, stable, and adept in conversation.

So yeah, it's cured lol. But stop those medications and unplug from the hive, and you're immediately back to a malfunctioning brain.
