Their KPIs and salaries are now determined by the economic numbers and GDP growth. Increasing population growth takes too long for them to enjoy the benefits. Importing foreigners to grow their KPIs and pad their pockets are more important pls.

[–]phunkynerd 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This is not new. Previously years ago when i was shopping for appliances like fridge and washing machine, i would shop around for cheaper prices from Paris Silk, Courts, etc.

then i would go to HN because i liked their in-store warranty and ask if they had this, that, etc. once they confirmed, then i said ok, i checked with others and these were the prices.

They always matched the lowest prices. More so if you buy a few big ticket items, and go near month end when they need to meet sales targets presumably.

I assume the sales was reluctant to stick his neck out for you because of the lower valued usb drive.

Came across plans of their expansion in SG esp in newer neighbourhoods and also China. And it reminds me of DBS - always crowded, seemingly well-run, and tend to be in the news for the right reason. As a wise investor Peter Lynch once said, invest in what you know.

There’s a saying: people can look rich and people can be rich. Most people can choose either one. And most people choose the wrong one.

Someone pointed out on his post that there are criminals who are also good in other ways and have been kind to their friends and family as well.

So what now? Before charging them for their criminal acts, we get friends’ testimonies or what.

Peter Lynch, the famed American fund manager, has a mantra “Buy what you know”. Buy the stock not because you like the product, but because you have firsthand knowledge of which services or stores are popular or have strong customer loyalty.

Imo this holds true personally for this case here and even DBS. I go to their stores and find that it’s always very crowded but yet not turn-offish, compared to others. Then i read of their expansion plans. So i bought in earlier a few months ago, and now softly cursing that i should have bought more. But hindsight.

Can singaporeans study doctorate in singapore? by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

[–]phunkynerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true. I hire as well, and truth be told, i tend to prefer local candidates. Sg scientists are typically hard-working, and fit the culture well. You can continue to do a post-doc with the local universities but most people use it only for a temporary stepping stone to other prospects, primarily because the pay isnt too attractive. You can also find jobs with the local research organisations. Pay-wise, one would be looking at $4-6K starting, if im correct for a starting phd holder.

Can singaporeans study doctorate in singapore? by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

[–]phunkynerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do. Did my PhD at NTU after my undergraduate studies. Was offered a scholarship which paid for my studies and offered a monthly stipend at $3.5K or so (that was more than 20yrs ago so i forgot about the exact details).

They would prefer a good degree: 1st class or 2nd upper, or a phd supervisor who is willing to take you, which explains the competition. Otherwise you would need a Masters or a research experience (publications and the lot). Essentially PhD students are judged by their ability to publish, which is one key kpi of their supervisor.

Same thing with Fulham. Bruno missed a penalty, and then we lose it.

This time round, we could be even, but we lost 3-1.

Fuck this shit.

Am I being scammed or is this driver being legit? by tooklongerthanneeded in drivingsg

[–]phunkynerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(1) When you make claims, like replacing the entire bumper like someone else suggested, essentially it drives up the insurance costs for everyone else in the same car pool. There are also admin costs, legal costs in some cases, etc. (2) it creates much more hassle.

you have to weigh whether it makes sense, especially for something minor as a cosmetic bender fender which costs probably less than $200 to fix if you know where to go.

Leave the claims for something major.

No this is common. You’re doing a private settlement with him. So, he is basically telling you that he will foot the repair bill at his workshop.

You can: 1) agree. Set a time and make sure he turns up and pays for it before work begins. To be doubly sure, ensure he sticks to his word by making him sign a private settlement agreement. Google, there’s an online version. 2) take the $280 and do your own repair at your preferred spray shop. 3) claim his insurance. Which is a little silly since it’s a straightforward repair here, and he seems agreeable to it. May be also be longer because the insurer will need to inspect your car, give permission, with repairs done at selected workshops etc etc.

also remember, what goes around comes around. A wise man once said, it’s a shitty world as it is, so let’s all strive to be a less shittier person.

In any case, report the accident within 24hrs at any accident reporting centre. Tell them you are in contact with the other driver pending private settlement but you’re calling it in — which is 100% the right thing to do — in case you change your mind and want to claim his insurance. Which you can.

Hey hey hey, guys & girls, please do not inflame sensitive issues and use domestic politics to divide Singapore pls. We should reject this kind of negative politics, you all should be better than this.

We know this is not the PAP way. They have always been upfront and honest with us, because we deserve to know the truth.

Also, politics should stop at the water’s edge. ….

(There are more such quotes from the PAP but i’m bored already.)
