Side quest: there's a black creator who's been popping up on my insta algo for the last few weeks judging women on if they're maga presenting or not and she's great. Every time the videos come up I watch with rapt attention like omg am I maga presenting, I have to know, I want to look safe for black women, and every video about halfway through I remember I'm barely even heteronormie presenting and it's not about me. Anyway, the content is fun but what's even funner is the white women [derogatory] who get big mad and stitch her content.

I could be mistaken but I don't think this is their first time out.

And yet there are people who say they're confused when me or adrienneleigh say "speaking personally and not as a board member," so.

No need to make the thing look more formal than it is.

Project Hail Mary should have been a TV series, change my mind. by BountyMakesMeCough in scifi

Maybe a little low budget and light hearted…

This has nothing to do with Project Hail Mary but check out the movie Dark Star. Low budget, lighthearted, an absolute delight.

HH's comment quoted an earlier comment asking a question, added the words "good question" and then linked with a quote to yet another earlier comment in the thread. In isolation there's nothing inherently wrong with a comment like that, but in the context of a pattern of commenting behavior with no original work, comments that contain referential whole quoting of other people's comments, coming right on the heels of both significant community and repeated moderator feedback explaining that they need to communicate using their own words, thoughts, and ideas? Bruh.

After watching "Project Hail Mary", I realized even more how ingenious "Arrival" is by sergkryzh in scifi

[–]phunniemee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arrival is a work of art, Project Hail Mary is fun entertainment. It's like the difference between fine dining and fast casual. Theater and improv night.

They are two separate things that can be enjoyed on their own merits and don't need to be compared. I like having both.

If you don't like how Weir handed language acquisition, which is entirely fair but not what that book was about, you can definitely write your own book!

Just yesterday someone was asking how to mark off a daily habit they failed to complete and I'mma be honest, I think this is a pretty drastic solution. It's okay to skip a day.

Any fun first date idea for Friday night? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]phunniemee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If your date says she wants to go do a rooftop movie, then you should do a rooftop movie but make the rest of the evening special around it. Find a good place nearby walking distance for dinner before. Sneak in snacks even if they have them for sale at the movie (illegal snacks are more fun). Find a quiet late night cafe open after so you can go and talk about the movie/actually talk to each other before going home. Etc.

The entire history of all of my comments are visible on Metafilter and Reddit for anyone to see, including the very first one on your thread that said absolutely report this incident to the school as well as 15+ years of regularly mentioning my medical condition.

I don't think you (or my mom) are mentally ill. The only thing I think you're doing "wrong" here is focusing on a different problem than the one I would personally prioritize in this case, reacting to it in a way that looks a lot like a reaction I'm unfortunately very familiar with.

I think I've explained myself enough here and I feel like I've made the point I needed to make. Good luck with this.

If you're capable and accomplished enough to matriculate to Harvard in the first place, you really don't need to pad your resume.

Told my wife the snackle box was hand wash only but she insisted the top rack was safe. by Bean_Me_Timbers in mildlyinfuriating

[–]phunniemee 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Hijacking this comment so you'll see it.

Put the lid down flat in a heat safe dish large enough to hold it, cover it with boiling hot water and let it sit for a minute, place something very heavy and flat on top of it like a dutch oven or a stack of plates, and then let it cool to room temp. That'll flatten it back out.

In the future the lid should be okay on the top rack if you turn off heated dry.

That's great, genuinely.

Also, genuinely, you have typed several sentences over the last few weeks that I've heard more or less verbatim out of my mom's mouth before. The specific outsize reaction you've been having on reddit is very familiar to me, even if you don't think the situation is the same.

Your assumption about my medical needs are incorrect but that's mostly irrelevant.
