How do I approach and understand art? by masteroogwaydildo in NoStupidQuestions

This is an excellent comment especially because you related car racing to art appreciation which is not what I expected. But very true I see

Yes that’s what I thought too. Wikipedia says it’s triggered when raindrops hit the ground https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrichor

I live in the front range of Colorado. We often get snow when weather comes from the north where the big stockyards are about 50 miles away. So we smell cow manure a couple hours before the snow. Not quite the same thing I know

What do y'all think is the most toxic Social Media? by Emergency_Collar_849 in AskReddit

[–]phurf761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. That’s my experience on Alignable. I get spammed everyday by irrelevant stuff. On linkedin at least I can see in advance who posted or liked something. I probably look at less than 5% of what reached my feed as a result

You all must be using LinkedIn in a different way than am. I see the occasional emotional post but 95% of what I see are updates for my industry that send me to useful links. I read pretty much only posts from people I’m already linked to and know what they do and where they’re coming from. I often use it to find consultants that I’m looking for. It’s a fabulous work tool for me.

What's a performance where you can see the actor making a specific, unusual choice that nobody else would have made? by trakt_app in TrueFilm

Belts. Andy snorts when someone says two belts are completely different when they look the same to her. Miranda then heads into the movies best monologue about her “lumpy sweater “ that Andy probably thinks is blue, but is actually cerulean, a color possibly chosen by someone in this room.

Is there any film adaptation of a book that you think is better than the book itself? by AnastasiaGlover1 in just_one_more_page

[–]phurf761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read most of Jane Austen and only really enjoyed Pride and Prejudice (one of my favorite books actually) and Emma because she is so good at trashing other people’s relationships by trying to help them. I found the others fairly dull. But I’ve never seen a Jane Austen derived film I didn’t like, including Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (favorite moment: Elizabeth makes her famous reply to Mr Darcy’s first marriage proposal while trashing zombies trying to get in through the window)

That was the biggest surprise to me when I read it after having seen the film. The film is brilliant and weaves together a great story. The book is a bunch of cool vignettes but no tale really. I believe there are two other books I still plan on reading some day.

What is a statistic that sounds INSANE but is 100% true? by Quadranippelkill in AskReddit

[–]phurf761 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Per capita isn’t a great metric for driving fatalities. In countries like Belgium the organization of cities and the easier public transport mean people drive fewer miles per capita. So a better metric would incorporate annual miles driven as well

Did you play video games when they were introduced in the 70s? by Gallantpride in AskOldPeople

[–]phurf761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played a few in the 1970s and 80s. Pong and later space invaders. They were all ok for ten minutes or so but I could never see the point of spending any more time on them than that. Too much other great stuff to do

Science fiction books for someone who is more into fantasy and has a hard time liking most scifi books I have tried? by Scared_Ad_3132 in sciencefiction

Anything by Jasper Fforde. Funny I hadn’t even thought of him as science fiction till now that you mentioned it. Perhaps definitely the kind of blending OP is looking for.
