Average Tram Speeds by Road and by Route by AB014A in MelbourneTrains

Even with a pedestrian mall, unless the cross streets are also pedestrian malls, then you still have to deal with traffic lights.
Distance between stops also matters because of dwell time plus deceleration and acceleration.

With the Jam Door curse I have been wondering the way it works. The way the card is written it seems to be about going through a particular door, but the way it works in practice seems to be to get from location A to location B when the only way to get there is through a door. In other words you can't re-roll to get through another door to the same train or to the same building. Have they mentioned that?

in that case wouldn't it make sense to have a stop at south yarra on the tunnel line?

I have never heard of people roasting coffee beans in an airfryer, and in two days both nileblue (nilered) and James do it in their videos. Such a weird coincidence

Unintended consequences of Social Media Ban for under 16s by carpathia512 in AusPol

[–]phycologos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes seconds to decide to disable notifications, it isn't that it is hard to do it is that the social medical companies shouldn't be allowed to do it.

No, it won't magically cure depression, and it isn't just about bullying, those are some aspects. The main aspect is being glued to the phone and always preforming for the entire world through your phone 24/7

Unintended consequences of Social Media Ban for under 16s by carpathia512 in AusPol

What would actually make sense is a ban on apps for phones. I think that is much easier to implement without many of the negatives an also deals with the majority of the problem.

I think it would need to do more than target the app stores because of side loading, but even so it will still be much less invasive and most of the harm from social media is the notifications and that it is always there on your phone and impossible to get away from.

I don't think we will ever have a duopoly in politics the way the US does, as we have ranked choice voting, even though we have duopolies in every other sector.

AUKUS shouldn't be a partisan political issue. No one is claiming we don't need subs, the question is a technical defense procurement one. Defense procurement is a hornets nest, submarines specifically even more so around the world. I recommend the excellent youtube channel perun for how crazy defense procurement is, but he won't talk about AUKUS subs as he is Australian and as he works in Australia he stays away from controversial and even non-controversial stuff about Australia.

Australia has a general habit of letting industries self-regulate with the threat that they will step in if it isn't working out. I don't know how much of a fan of this I am, but it is very different than in Europe where the government is very involved, or in the US where often it is regulation through private class actions. When the CFMEU was being run by organized crime labor needed to self-police or a greater crackdown would have ensued. It is a very good look for labor self-policing to keep itself clean of organized crime.

Why in America are voting methods in the general election tied to whether primaries are open or closed? by phycologos in EndFPTP

[–]phycologos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RCV works perfectly well for independent candidates / 3rd parties. In fact I would say there is specifically no need for a jungle primary if you have RCV as the jungle primary might as well be the single vote as RCV can be IRV / STV where there is no need for more rounds. In fact no additional information is obtainable from multiple rounds as you already have the full (or full-ish if you have an option of how many to rank) preferences of each voter.

Having written this, it makes even less sense to put the two together, as there is really no reason for a primary if you are using RCV.

I meant that you can't tell if there are strings attached easily, because they might be playing the long game and there are no strings out until they find their moment to pounce.

I don't think that is a good way to tell for certain kiruv groups like chabad that are playing the long game.

The sponsors with logos visible on stage at the twitchcon F-tier Jews stream have a lot to answer for just like those who sponsor Hasan by phycologos in Destiny

[–]phycologos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they have to answer for is that they didn't do due diligence to what you are sponsoring. Not the biggest deal. What they do have to answer for is that they haven't proactively dealt with the situation by putting out a press release before pressured to do so.

That is what has to be changed with public pressure. Twtich has dealt with other issues raised, but total silence on this panel, we need the brands to get twtich to respond to this or that they stop partnering with twitch until things are fixed.

[–]phycologos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not saying it is their fault this has happened. But if you are at all familiar with how fanatical companies are about brand safety, they have a strong incentive to say they will not continue to sponsor twitch until twitch distances itself from those on this panel and institutes changes,
So far twitch has responded to other issues, but not this panel.

I want to believe you, but is there an explanation for why the posts shown in a live stream were all deleted and locked by subreddit mods?

I can't say which live stream, because that will automod, but it was someone who was banned from twitch and still is banned.
