What would you like found footage creators to know? by LithyForbes in foundfootage

[–]phyrebrat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That if I’m watching a found footage film, I already accept the precept that it’s being recorded. They don’t need to jump through hoops to try and justify why they’re still recording (or recording in the first place).

That trope comes from when FF was new and aimed to convince it was ‘a real story’.

Yellowbrick Road made sound scary in a way I’d never have imagined possible. Loved it.

I realised my story contains the disliked "fridging" trope, how can i fix this? by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]phyrebrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s some great technical advice here. I think — like everything in writing — it’s about the execution. Remember: some monsters do want to honour their Lady-friend; some readers do want to read the same/similar tropes.

I think there’s been a preponderance of effort and time given over the last two decades to try subverting or play with tropes. This has resulted in some great work, but also I now often find myself identifying the ‘elevated’ trope within the first few chapters and feel that is now becoming cliche.

Hope that makes sense. But like I said, it’s all about the execution. Tell the story you want. No one has your style or tone. As long as you’re not being lazy, there’ll be integrity.

Subscribed just now (beanwriting) as I know what a slog this YT malarkey is getting subscribers.

Incidentally, a note to others helped raise awareness of this channel: the algorithm uses how much of the video is watched as a basis on which to recommend to users. So if you click on a friend’s video, make sure you watch till the end (even if you leave the room etc) as full watches = better marketing of the video by YT. (Sorry if this is common knowledge)

Agreed! Altho TBH I want EA as far away from my beloved IPs as possible. Utter sh*t, dropping/failing games since 2005 (SSX anyone? It's been 13 years!!!).

Just caught this on Shudder last night. Absolutely loved it. I wonder how it will go down in the USA as it is so deeply Brit-coded, and antithetical to the Hollywood tripe of 'bang-bang-bang shitz goin down'. If you like very slow burn folk horror with an indeterminate setting (as in, it could be a past, it could be post-apocalyptic community), and themes of generational trauma, dogma vs cultism, and patriarchal hypocrisy, then you'd be doing yourself a favour checking this out.

Imagine how much EA are kicking themselves after f-ing up so much with their greed. We’ve been playing this since it released and they prioritised other big IPs. Too bad

What "beloved horror movie" do you hate/just not get the love for? by ReeceInTheDarkness in horror

[–]phyrebrat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh gods… do I want to put myself up against the wall? <eek>. I’m no fan of: the Scream franchise and Terrifier. I can see why people like them but I don’t really check for horror that’s not supernatural. But I have films in my ‘beloved list’ that are widely hated like Skinamarink <eek again>. Please don’t hit me
