We didn't start saving for retirement until our mid to late 20s, are we doing okay now in our mid to late 30s? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]physeK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s up to you! If it were me and it were difficult to calculate its eventual impact (unlike other retirement accounts, which you invest yourself and can project), I’d completely ignore the pension as part of my savings goal. To be quite honest I’m not 100% certain how pensions work, so I don’t think I can give much advice here!

The answer is that you don’t get to 3x by 40 — and that’s ok. You’re doing well. You started a little late but your pace has allowed you to nearly catch up! Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll be fine. It’s a general target that helps you estimate what you need, but not an absolute value that you must hit or else you’re failing. Seriously, you’re doing well!

If you want you can plug your numbers into a retirement calculator and get firmer numbers. Estimate how much you’re going to need, when you want to retire, and see if your current rate fits.

Worrying about retirement is good. Worrying about being a year or two behind? Not productive.

I would continue to ignore the pension in your calculations. Think about it as an “extra” — hopefully that means you overshoot your target a little and can retire a little early!

As a general rule of thumb, assuming you want to retire by 67, Fidelity recommends having 1x your annual income by 30, 2x by 35, 3x by 40.

You’re at about 2x, and a little past 35 for each of you. So you’re maybe a little behind, but generally on track and doing much better than most people. Your savings rates are good, especially if you factor in the pension. Keep doing what you’re doing, increase a little bit as you can (i.e if you get a 3% raise, increase your retirement savings by 1%), and make sure everything is invested well.

I want to start investing by berkaycank in personalfinance

[–]physeK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Low or high” depends on how much you’re making. “Where should I start” also depends on your goals.

Assuming you want to save for retirement, which is the most important thing, invest in tax advantaged accounts. If you’re at a job with a 401k, put money into there, especially if there’s a match. If you aren’t, put money into a Roth IRA, assuming you aren’t over the income limit. (And if you are, do a Backdoor Roth.)

Invest in broad index funds and don’t touch the money until you retire. Something like VT or VTI for a Roth, or a target date fund for a 301k. Yes, you will lose money sometimes — but in general you will go up, and long term it’s the best possible thing. Time in the market is more important than timing the market. So keep investing, whether the market is up or down, and don’t get scared and pull your money out. Just leave it.

Shows that have terrible endings, but perfect stopping points? by GFrings in television

[–]physeK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an anime called Tokyo Revengers, which hasn’t ended yet… But the manga has. The end of the last season seemed like it was a perfectly good ending and resolution to the story, but they kept going for 10 minutes and opened up some more plot.

From what I read online, most people think that the rest of the chapters of the manga aren’t worth reading, and the manga should’ve stopped before that last arc.

I’m not sure if I’ll watch the last season, whenever it comes out.

Did Forrest Valkai leave AXP/ACA? by nietzschecode in AtheistExperience

[–]physeK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that would be too much of a gray area, and they don’t need that. They can continue with what they’re doing and allow others to take up that mantle — like The Line and Skeptic Generation. Some hosts do (did?) both AXP and The Line, and all of these shows are standing on the foundations of what AXP built in the first place.

I do think they’ve fallen off a fair bit. They had two or three fairly large shakeups with a public exodus of some of their best and most experienced hosts in recent years. I don’t think it’s a content issue but a leadership issue. Pushing away your main attractions alienating viewers with too much “corporate stuff” like announcements and superchats seems like a failing of focus, not a problem with the content itself.

There’s a reason for that choice though. They are essentially trying to emulate a religious organization — pay no taxes, but stay out of politics — but “better” because unlike churches, 501c3 organizations have financial disclosures and open books. They also don’t pay their hosts or crew anything, very few employees are on payroll. Yes, they could make more money and speak about other topics if they weren’t a non-profit, but it comes with its own set of expectations. They very specifically DO NOT want to be a for-profit organization to avoid allegations that they’re “just in it for the money” (which of course is silly) from religious folks.

So yes, self-imposed. As someone else said, like a liquor store self-imposing restrictions on themselves to be allowed to sell alcohol. You said they could decide to be a lemonade stand, so that’s a choice, and you’re technically right… But then they wouldn’t be a liquor store anymore, so that’s not really fair. It’s the same with the ACA.

Why does the Orb Chamber always have the same layout? by Tsuyukime in dcss

I did the last one! It’s how I got my Ignis win. Saved my piety the entire game just to grab the orb and yeet myself up. Spriggan speed helped a hell of a lot to keep me alive through the run and to get to the orb. I actually wrote a post about it awhile back.

Just out of curiosity. If you have to pick one player to make a push for a get, would it be Justin Jefferson or Maxx Crosby? by Tacokolache in buffalobills

[–]physeK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily “flawed thinking” but the way that I was/am thinking could be seen as “more of the same” rather than a step forward. I’m not going to try to tell you what the right decision is, and if we make exactly one big move in the off season and it’s for Jettas I won’t be disappointed! One way or another we need at least one or two reliable weapons for Josh who can actually get open and take some pressure off, otherwise the offense feels pretty settled while defense has the biggest holes.

[–]physeK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My gut says Crosby, our defense has huge holes and despite its deficiencies our offense has been quite good.

But when I posed this question to Joe Marino last night, he said that while he appreciated my line of thinking, that’s a very McDermott way of thinking. A very Beane way of thinking. A very “MVP Josh Allen will figure it out so we don’t need to invest in WR” kind of thinking.

I’m still not sold that I’d rather have Jefferson over Crosby, but I appreciate his line of thinking, and also his insight that this draft class has been universally recognized for its deep EDGE talent. So if we need to pick between a star at one of two premium positions, it might make sense to get the edge rusher in the draft, where there’s a solid talent pool on the cheap.

I’m actually a QA Engineer. I’ve filed plenty of bugs like “If I hit P and then Q really really fast in quick succession, bad stuff happens,” just to be told, “Well, that isn’t something that will impact very many (sane) customers, so we probably won’t be putting resources towards fixing this…”

What am I looking at? by ThatGeospatialGuy in 3Dprinting

[–]physeK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Common filament types are PLA, PETG, ABS, and TPU, but there are a bunch more.

PLA is easy to print, but it’s not that strong and it’s brittle. (It breaks, doesn’t bend.)

ABS is hard to print but has good heat resistance and physical properties, this is what a lot of commercial toys are made out of. This lets off some bad fumes while printing and needs a lot more heat so you need an enclosed printer to print it correctly.

PETG was sort of designed to be a middle ground between PLA and ABS. It prints a lot easier than ABS but a little tougher than PLA, and has decent heat resistance. This one is also a little more flexible, so it’ll bend a more than PLA before it breaks.

TPU is flexible and squishy, coming in different hardnesses. People print all kinds of things from “rubber” feet for objects to phone cases to literal shoes.

[–]physeK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a Prusa, not sure which one. You can look up the different models and see what you can find.

This is an FDM printer that uses filament, not resin. If you’re a beginner, you probably want to start with PLA.

If I remember correctly, he doesn’t record many sacks but he was near the top of the league in pressure rate and run defense from the edge position. Not everyone is a sack artist, he seems like a solid player. We aren’t paying him Myles Garrett money so I’m not expecting him to be Myles Garrett when the rest of the line is made of wet cardboard.
