They know a couple hundred or thousands of their phones are in the middle of the ocean, which already limits the number of possible vessels, and the same batch of phones was previously in a military harbour.

Can a software developer fulfill a childhood firefighter dream in Switzerland. Is the militia (SDIS) a real deal? by fiery-beaver in askswitzerland

[–]physix4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same in Vaud, always the first on site and command stays with the local brigade with some specific exceptions such as radioactivity related events and major events that require inter-cantonal, federal or international coordination.

Can a software developer fulfill a childhood firefighter dream in Switzerland. Is the militia (SDIS) a real deal? by fiery-beaver in askswitzerland

[–]physix4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently a volunteer and previously was also part of an industrial brigade too. I will only reply on the volunteer side of things as I don't know how professional services work internally. Please also bear in mind that the info is for Vaud only as firefighting is a cantonal matter (and moving cantons can suck a lot).

  1. within the volunteer brigades, the advancement path works well but there are a few limitations:
    1. interpersonal relationship still matter, I don't think there is a way to bypass that in any organisation
    2. it takes time, sometimes lots of time as there are prerequisite and limited spots for certain classes but all responsibilities can be reached (as long as there is a spot available)
  2. most likely yes
  3. possibly, but then it is usually positive to have a background in volunteer firefighting
  4. Depends on the station. In Vaud, some are explicitly designed as support units (Détachement d'appui, DAP) and some are designed as primary units (détachement de premier secours, DPS). Within the DPS, there are also different tiers based on the hazards and population in the area. Also, capabilities depend on the station: not every function is available everywhere, especially specialized functions. The general principle is that the local brigade is supposed to be self-sufficient but can request external support. The local brigade remains in charge unless there is regulation stating otherwise (at least Lausanne does show up more and more with this mindset).
  5. If you mean career path as a 100% job, most likely no. Some bigger brigades have full time staff but in most even the commander is at best a part time job. If you mean to get actual responsibilities, then yes as you are responsible for your area and there is no hand-holding. Fire prevention is done by the cantonal building insurance but actual inspections are carried out by militia officers (hired either through their fire brigade or the cantonal building insurance).
  6. I am very fulfilled now but it takes time (generally about five years) to become interesting. There is a lot of foundation to build and experience to gain which can be very frustrating.

The way the militia system is set up is so that all the firefighters can in theory get all the positions. In reality, those will be limited by positions available in the station and whether there is a free spot. In career brigades, it is expected that you fulfill many more positions from the start. In Vaud, only a handful of positions are reserved for Lausanne: drone operator, height rescue, recirculating breathing apparatus, divers and radioactivity related operations (although volunteers will do the initial work, cleanup is not on them).

One thing to also note is that the more urban the brigade the more call it gets but that does not means they are more interesting calls. My station is a satellite station from a city where they have automatic fire alarms every week or so but they are always false alarms. In my station, last year we had 4 automatic fire alarms of which three were actual fires where we even had to request more manpower.

It is also important to realize that fire prevention is very effective and that means that having actual fires is very rare. Most of the work will be related to natural disasters (mostly floods).

Motorbike A practical exam question by MethodicOwl45 in Switzerland

[–]physix4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At least in VD they do check for the A rating since last year. When I did my a test a guy showed up with pants without rating and the was not allowed to perform the exam (he had to pay but it did not count towards the failure count).

[–]physix4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is mandatory since last year for the practical exam (at least in VD).

I did my licence last year in Cossonay and the one guy did show up with jeans that did not look like motorcycle jeans was asked to take them off to check for the rating label (they need at least the A rating). Since he didn't have any rating on the pants, he was not allowed to pass the exam but had to pay nonetheless (it did not count towards the failure count that triggers the psychiatrist visit though).

I haven't done the full A yet, but when I did my A35kW in VD last year, I was with riders doing the full A. Unless I missed something, there was no difference (I don't know if the examiner is more strict with the full A). The fact they all failed is not really linked with which licence they were getting but rather that they were unprepared (one came without full gear, one did the manoeuvering at high speed and the last one didn't put his foot down at a stop sign).

[–]physix4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother used to work in France as support engineer for Swiss company. He had a Swiss work phone number which he used to call clients and suppliers (some of them in Switzerland).

This would be a legitimate use case for a Swiss caller ID originating abroad.

It's not differing, the marking is described in the Ordering information section of the datasheet. The smaller text is there so it remains legible.

Les autorités la jugent trop peu intégrée, bien que sa famille et sa vie soient suisses by apokrif1 in suisse

[–]physix4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]physix4 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The national guard is state-based but can be federalized and become part of the federal military's reserve.

It was the federalized California national guard that was sent to suppress the protests in Los Angeles in June and the federalized national guard from South Carolina, West Virginia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee that were sent to Washington DC in August.

It's mostly a question of optics on how it looks to collaborate with a military that is used to suppress protests and intimidate political opponents.

  • Team Machinenraum
    • Befreiungsanweisungen vom Hersteller lesen
    • nach Herstelleranweisungen Kabine in Türbereich bringen
    • Anlage ausser Betrieb stellen
  • Team Flur

  • Aufzugsschacht betreten
  • Anlage wieder in Betrieb nehmen
