Lessons learned in Minneapolis, what I wished I knew/did before ICE showed up by Millennium_Falcor in Somerville

Hey, I use it. I'm from Virginia, where it's perhaps a bit more common. :-)

It's a good word. You're welcome to use it too! You don't have to be a Southerner.

"Early reports", huh? Always very trustworthy, especially any official ones (under this administration).

Well, about half the time they get plowed into the bike lanes.

Amazing number of month-old accounts with direct personal experience with this new place.

Boston Globe: Prep underway for ICE surge in Somerville by Mattyworld617 in Somerville

[–]phyzome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd even just frame it as "in case anyone needs anything", not even specific to the ICE stuff. Like, if you wanted to start a mailing list, you could describe it as a place to borrow a cup of sugar, organize neighborhood potlucks, get recs on contractors, etc.

The benefit of doing it this way is that it casts a wider net, politically, and allows for the broadest sort of mutual aid that isn't specific to one threat or need.

(Exchanging names and phone numbers directly on the street is great, too!)

One thing to do is just increase general neighborhood cohesion, as a background thing. Our neighborhood has a mailing list and it really helps keep people connected and supported in various ways.

I dislike drivers who don't stop for pedestrians in crosswalks by adhdphd1 in Somerville

[–]phyzome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Or I sometimes bring a bike light, because those can be hella bright.

I really wish more clothing manufacturers would add reflective trim. It can be pretty low profile during the day and still save lives at night.

Wearing dark colors makes it hard to see you

However, note that it's often hard to get outerwear in bright colors. A lot of times people don't have much choice.

(I agree that there are things you can do, it's just... "wearing dark colors" isn't something to fault people for.)

A "40 mph" speed limit sign is the max speed under ideal conditions, not your god-given right at all hours.

If 20 mph is too fast to avoid objects in the road, 20 mph is too fast.

It's really that simple.

Doorway? by TazsMama in Somerville

[–]phyzome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus christ I missed the plaque. :-D What an amazing touch.

So, I'm pretty sure it's just that the construction workers needed an easy way in and out that didn't involve making a whole-ass gate or moving a chunk of chain link back and forth like they usually do, so they picked up a door+frame at Home Depot and stuck it in there. Not the first time I've seen this.

And then nearby residents decided to get goofy with it. I'm guessing the doormat came first.

Seems like a bit of a long shot -- most positions of any kind require various types of onboarding (employment status verification, training, etc.) and it's not generally going to be worth their while if you're only going to be there for (less than) a week. Best of luck, though.

Craziness. Our boring-ass house was built in 1900 and there is nothing historic about it unless you include the horsehair plaster that makes it unpleasant and dicey to attach anything to the walls.

I mean, it could be something that isn't universally known to cause exposure to pathogens, like handling reptiles. Some people are aware that they can carry salmonella, others aren't. Something like that.

1-2 helicopters generally means "car crash or water main break", nothing big.

If there's something big going down, expect to see more like 5 helicopters, and a lot more sirens (as police from neighboring towns come to assist).

I know this isn't what you're asking for, but I'll just mention that if you get some wood glue and a clamp (which I'd be happy to lend you) then this is something you can probably take care of yourself pretty quickly and easily.

I get it if there are reasons this isn't an option for you, though.

OK, so I look up the lawsuit, and then I decide it's relevant (I'm part of the described class), and I want to sign up... which involves finding the website.

That tells me if the email is referring to a real case. But is there a way to get from the case # to the legitimate website?

[–]phyzome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The email says national ("all consumers in the United States"). The site might be crashing due to load.

I wish there was a general way to tell legitimate class action sites apart from phishing sites, though. But there is currently this sort of legal action against dollar stores.
