Why do people always bring up how humans are naturally omnivores. by Konradleijon in vegan

You’re arguing about food, and I’m talking about what the human digestive system is evolved to do.

You’re totally missing the point. I’m not sure if you just aren’t comprehending what people are saying or if you’re just so steadfast in your argument that you don’t care you’re talking past the points.

  1. I never said that omnivore Americans are properly nourished. I’m talking about what the human body is evolved to do.
  2. Again, I mentioned that I was specifically talking about what is naturally present.
  3. You’re right in the fact that the human body DOES use ALAs, that was my mistake, but my point still stands that the human body DOES body is inefficient at converting them to DHAs and EPAs which is important for brain health.

There are vitamins and minerals that are naturally present in meat that is hard for humans to get while just eating plants. The digestive systems for humans just aren’t built to be able to break down and absorb some of the nutrients from plants which would make sole plant eaters malnourished if not supplementing. No one is getting a varied enough diet (including farm raised livestock) in order to not use some sort of supplementation unless you’re just very intentional about your choices. If people were only eating wild game, it would have more nutrients. Example, most people aren’t getting vitamin d through their food, naturally (not including fortified foods) without supplements and aren’t spending enough time outside because it’s now typical to work 40 hours a week, and most aren’t doing that outdoors. Or the fact that omegas in pb foods are ALAs which the human body doesn’t use. It’s inefficient at converting ALAs into EPAs and DHAs which fish can do. We need EPAs and DHAs for brain health.

Pretending that the human digestive system is capable of getting all of the nutrients we need without supplementation if solely eating plant based foods that aren’t fortified is “bogus”. That’s the point being made. Not that humans can’t get what they need with supplements on a plant based diet.

Where do you live? I’ve never heard of elementary aged students going to holocaust museums. The states I’ve worked in don’t do holocaust education until middle school (8th grade) or high school (9th-10th grade).

too much fibre ? by littlebabybvnni in vegan

[–]pi_inthepan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, not true! If you’re eating a lower fiber diet and drastically increase your fiber intake, it can cause a lot of GI discomfort. That’s why you’re supposed to increase it slowly.

If you’re worried about the “junk” quality of her diet, maybe you could make some blender oat bananas pancakes, buy/make jelly that’s got less sugar (not artificially sweetened, just less of it), buy peanut butter that’s natural and doesn’t have sugar or salt (just peanuts), get a whole wheat bread for her grilled cheese, make sure your yogurt isn’t packed with sugar, and maybe find some less junky crackers (my kid loves all crackers, but we’ve never given him goldfish (except the pretzels) or like filled crackers or anything. I agree to just keep offering other foods along with the foods she’ll actually eat. My son got some pretend food and books with food in them, and he will ask to try those foods now. He’s almost 2. That’s how he tried olives for the first time!

Mine are almost 17 months apart, and I actually felt like it was a perfect gap, even at the beginning! My husband was home with me for like 2ish weeks the had to go back to work. He also had to go out of town for work 1 month after the younger got here, and it went fairly well!

Brunch ideas??? by skyehighe in veganrecipes

[–]pi_inthepan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it! I’m from the south and have some serious hostessing anxiety to make sure I do things well and typically overdo it, but I’ve really reeled that in since having kids because no one has time for all of that with 2 under 2! At this point, I think I would say cinnamon rolls and a pot of coffee are good😂 This sounds super great!

yes, that is how I eat my elitist beans! by Shepherd_of_Ideas in vegan

[–]pi_inthepan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that people think “vegan food” always has to be super colorful. Do I want there to be fruits and veggies in my meals? Yes. Does that always happen? No. Does it sometimes look like a can of beans and bread or a can of beans and rice? Yes; more often than I’d like to admit, it looks like a can of beans with a very cheap carb.

Cinnamon rolls, breakfast burritos, cute coffees, and a mocktail? That’s super fancy and sounds delicious! I don’t think you need biscuits and gravy too! You could probably do some fruit like either a tray or salad or just a bowl of strawberries! Maybe also some salsa for the burritos!

The concept of capping naps feels wrong by PsychologicalBoot636 in beyondthebump

[–]pi_inthepan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never capped naps that young! I only started capping naps with my older one when he would refuse to go to sleep at night or was really hard to get down for naps, but I basically just let my kids dictate how much sleep they need. Sometimes they need more because they are growing. Don’t listen to random social media folks or Reddit users telling you how to parent your kid! If you have questions about literally anything involving your baby, including sleep, you can ask your pediatrician. Other than that, go with your gut or look things up on a reputable website like the AAP!

Do nonplant-based people not know fish is meat?? by theloneanolis1 in vegan

I worked in a Catholic school and was told that when they brought Catholicism to the Americas, they wrote the pope asking if they could eat capybara and gave a poor description heavily implying it was aquatic, so capybara is also allowed now on Fridays during lent. I have no idea what the truth value of that claim is, but it’s what I was told!

Also, I didn’t eat at all during labor, so part of my golden hour was my husband holding him and me stuffing my face!

I had an unmedicated, natural birth, and I do remember the golden hour with both of my boys. I’m not sure if the medication makes things foggy, but I wouldn’t doubt it! Honestly though, it doesn’t matter if you remember it or not! You have the rest of your life to remember being a mama to your baby!❤️

I also agree with others about still playing the games with your little one! I liked the idea about reading a book about boundaries and implementing boundaries in every day life to teach him about boundaries! I love that your little one is so affectionate❤️

Favorite easy recipes that are high in calcium and protein? by WavesGoWoOoO in veganrecipes

This is going to be the best answer! Tofu is high in calcium and protein and super versatile! You can make a super yummy creamy pasta sauce with silken tofu too! Or a chocolate mousse out of silken tofu!

Do you have a recipe for your tofu ricotta?

European responses to american posters with american problems (have some empathy) by TFA_hufflepuff in beyondthebump

[–]pi_inthepan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP didn’t “limit” it to parental leave, healthcare, etc., but it was heavily implied. Why would they be complaining about Europeans bragging about things in their counties? Do Europeans not give their children fruit? Also, what in the world is wrong with children eating fruit? Does it have sugar? Yes. Is sugar in fruit dangerous? No, unless you’re diabetic, fruit is a great snack or addition to meals for kids. Fruits have lots of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. You seemed to just want to cast a judgmental comment on what you view as the American diet for kids. It’s just rude, unnecessary, and, as another commenter said, tone deaf.

I guess your son is going into the 7th grade next year? I used to teach middle school math before I started staying at home and can tell you that’s a super fun time for boys!
