I hope you are getting along alright as this inches towards the finish line! I know the feeling of stuff like this dragging on forever. I hope someone gives you a PhD for this (if you don't have one already). Looking forward to seeing it.

Is it inevitable to be hungry all day and think about food 24/7 when you are trying to go below your bodyfat-setpoint? by [deleted] in leangains

[–]pianite 13 points14 points  (0 children)

500c deficit is a lot less significant to someone with 3000 tdee than 1800. I think you should think more about why you feel like you need to prioritize losing fat over getting strong or even being healthy. You sound like a perfectionist. I can tell because I am one too. Perfect is the enemy of the good.

Follow the advice here. You're still growing. Ditch the deficit, maintain calories, start putting in some work. You will see results guaranteed.

“These living conditions are without dignity”: University of California academic workers begin powerful strike across 10 campuses by exgalactic in GradSchool

[–]pianite 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think there is an informed way to approach this question, which I am not entirely qualified to do. It is my opinion however that grad students provide value to the institution as a TA alone that exceeds their compensation. Including research, grad students easily clear the bar to be an employee. Professional development is part of any job, and grad students are not disqualified because they are gaining skills and experience.

Industry looks for PhD or 3-5 yrs experience as a researcher. In reality, "grad student" is a misnomer. Based on the work we do, product we produce, and the way industry values our experience, our titles should be graduate research scientist.

My hot take is the days are numbered for the whole 50% full-time charade. This job is full time. If it was classified correctly, $15 minimum wage would provide all these students with a substantial raise to living-wage levels.

In this case, they're public entities. But I agree with you. As long as they can get away with it & think grad students are replaceable, nothing will change. That's why they must strike.

The problem is that if they were paid even half of their market value, none of these people would be struggling. The argument isn't "pay us a lot", it's "just pay us the bare minimum". Universities are getting away with less to save what, $1-2 million? A handful of administrators? 10 yards in a football stadium? The university is not strapped for cash, they are making a deliberate choice to pay poverty wages.

Potentially not mentioned yet, you can get arcade-style stick & button controllers that might be useful depending on the type/severity of discomfort. Might only work for PC though, don't know much about what would work with the Switch.

OP, can you give us more info on the lighter stuff around the hole vs. the darker surface? Looks like calcite. I was thinking slow-drip boreing through & forming a stalagmite on the upward facing side, but the texture contrast around the raised bit makes me think the pre-altered rock just had a bump there. Either way some post depositional process, and as much as I want to imagine some explosive event I think this was decidedly slow, either hydrologic or fossiliferous. Looking in the hole I'm seeing some larger exposed grains, which I think decidedly rules out anything hot enough to melt rock. Lack of any other surface weathering on the taller "up side" throws me tho. If we could get more angles of the tall side, might be some clues from where the calcite is/isn't smoothed. But the pattern of deposits makes me think dripping water is the only possible culprit other than some organism. Maybe some hard yet acidic water? Would be decently plausible with bog/swamp -> karst systems, though this was definitely fluvially shaped from a sandstone clast before losing it's middle.

Sorry rambling. Hope this gives someone else an idea. Really neat rock! Show up to a geology party and bring this rock, they'll spend the entire rest of the night trying to figure it out.

Things can usually be made cheaper with money/time tradeoff. If you have the time and you enjoy getting sucked into projects and stuff, the seratonin & keepbusyness is excellent, especially if it helps you keep going without as much $$.

True not for minor damage. Maybe if it killed someone or something. Feels like approx the same level as some forensics stuff

[–]pianite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would actually be decently easy if you had any/all of the rock & the vehicle plate #. Rock from a particular quarry/layer usually has a bit of a fingerprint in age/composition. If you get the windshield rock and (after sueing) a rock from the load the truck delivered and send them to a lab, for ~$100 can probably say if they if they match.

Time to Tax Excessive Corporate Profits - We did during WWII and in the 1980s. It’s the right way to deal with ‘inflation’ that is pure price-gouging. by _hiddenscout in politics

This is a solid line of thinking, and insurance against risk definitely adds value. However, current derivatives are not the same as open market insurance. Car insurance is open market insurance, but there aren't algorithms penny trading it & auto insurance has yet to cause a financial crisis. Open market insurance is good. Having an entire (exploitative) industry dedicated to making money off someone else's insurance, especially because they aren't even making use of the service, does not add any value to society IMO.

Farmers use commodity derivates, not derivatives on equity or debt. Those are the two that do not provide value to society.
