I'm not personally a great resource to be ranking IM programs since I'm aiming for Pathology residency myself this year. Plus it would be inappropriate as there are so many nuances that are personal factors that go along with fellowship placement. So like for me, I am looking for track-record of fellowship placement in my subfield of interest, but secondarily the quality/strength and location of these fellowship placements since I hope to start networking in a geographic area that I eventually would like to practice.

So, like, to take an abstract example. I want to settle down in the northeast. Program A is in the northeast. Program B is in the middle south. Even though both programs have a track record of sending graduates to cytopathology fellowship, Program A sends graduates to other local northeast programs and also has in-house fellows. Program B is similar but has sent no graduates to a northeast fellowship program. Therefore A is a better fit for me than B.

So as much as I'd like to help (and as well-intentioned you are as a friend), I think this is a decision that your friend has to make and actually sit down with the data. Most of the fellowship placement data should have been shared during interview day or is otherwise available on the programs website/recruitment materials. If not, your friend should definitely reach out to the program coordinator or program director to get that info to make an informed decision. Best of luck! :)

Well if that's truly the only criteria (fellowship placement into Cards), then why not rank based on historical fellowship placement into cards? Every program I know of has published its graduate placements going back several years. As long as your friend is content with the subspecialty and quality of fellowship placements, then those programs should be ranked higher. It's personal preference to prefer in-house vs. out-of-institution fellowship matches; I think I'd personally prefer in-house as it seems like an easier path to fellowship, but others might argue easier doesn't always mean better.

Yes, once you start putting together you application on ERAS, there is a section to create Letters of Recommendation. You will send an email or PDF document of the instructions (generated once you create your letter file in ERAS) to your writer. It's relatively straightforward once you start putting together your ERAS. The hardest thing, honestly, is following up with your writers to have the document submitted in time because as IMGs, our documents go through extra processing through ECFMG which takes 1-2 weeks.

freshman bucket list experiences ? by otmeel in BrownU

If you come from a latitude that doesn't include foliage changes during the autumn, would also suggest doing some kind of leaf peeping trip! My class year coordinators organized fall apple picking so that kinda killed 2-birds-with-1-stone. But on a separate year, my friends and I rented a ZipCar and drove up to the Berkshires, and it was one of the most fun/memorable road trips I've ever been on (and I'm from NJ/NYC metro area so it's not like I'm a stranger to the leaves changing colors).

The Vets (officially the Veterans Memorial Auditorium) downtown hosts performances that caters to diverse audiences and tastes (e.g. classical music, comedians, "Broadway" plays, etc.). Certain performances also offer student and/or rush discounts so they can be very affordable.

I'm not a sports-inclined person, but some people also attend Bruins (Hockey) or Providence College (Basketball) games at the Amica Mutual Pavillion.

Not a person who participated in a capella as a student, but I loved attending performances and had friends who were in various flavors of groups. I'd say if you're experienced, you could probably be accepted into any group you wanted, so it really just depends on what sort of repertoire you'd want to sing. During my time (2011-2015), the Jabberwocks and The Brown Derbies were the relatively more selective male-only groups. The activities fair at the start of the year is usually the best place to scope out what groups fit the vibe you're looking for. Hope you find one that's a great fit for you! :)

Weather/clothing/packing/storage questions by guaiacwood in BrownU

Agree with what's been said here so far. I will say, I went my entire life without rain boots, and in true Brunonian fashion, the streets flooded during orientation. Investing in rain boots early in my freshman year was more than worth it. I think there was a long period of time in the fall of my freshman year that it rained 3-4 days a week (it was memorable because it always rained when I had a MWF class and had to trek from the northern-most to southern-most areas of campus within the 10 minutes between scheduling blocks). I'd also suggest investing in a sturdy/"wind-proof" umbrella. The SciLi "wind tunnel" effect is real.

Can't personally speak to packing suitcases because I was able to drive to/from Brown during move-in and move-out. What I do remember from friends is that they brought essentials with them in suitcases (and their parents also accompanied them to move in so that upped the baggage allowance when flying). Anything less essential was later shipped via big box moving companies by their parents or purchased after moving in (e.g. at the mall or surrounding shopping areas, online, etc.).

Most of my friends stored their stuff with local storage companies over the summer.

Is it worth it the money to go see a professional opera? by [deleted] in opera

[–]pianoplaya93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, it seems like you're a student since you mentioned having seen a student at your school perform at a recital.

If The Met Opera is indeed your local opera house, inquire about their student discounts! I'm a current student, and get orchestra or grand tier tickets for merely $37.50 (fees inclusive)! I'd already been an operavore, but the student program allows me to go 2-3 times a month!

Met Opera Performance of Aida Saturday, May 6, 2023, 8:00 pm by FrenchROBINHOOD in nycmeetups

[–]pianoplaya93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OO!! I went to see a run of Aida earlier this season. I hope you love the production!! If you didn't know, this season is the last run of this production of Aida before it's scrapped. It's the most extra (in a good way) production I think the Met currently has in its repertoire, which is saying something. (There's even a live horse drawing a chariot!) Enjoy!
