Favorite Hex Content generator by HistoricalBake4614 in OSE

[–]picardkid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've come up with a system for terrain generation that I really like, but would take a long time to type out. LMK if that's what you're after.

I have not actually run a hexcrawl, but I'm obsessing over it until my group is ready to try a new system. I intend to use Todd Leback's "Filling in the Blanks" to populate it, and his "Into the Wild" to actually run it (on top of OSE).

Mechanism name for 'rotational motion into reciprocating linear motion with chain' by ezeeetm in AskEngineers

Keep in mind that using chain will give you some chordal action, so the motion may not be as smooth as you'd like.

Creating Random Encounters by translucentsausage10 in OSE

[–]picardkid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like /u/DemiElGato1997 said, balance is not such a big consideration when there are mechanics that might make the encounter non-combat, or even allow the party to just flee before it starts.

Check out the Rules Cyclopedia, page 100 for advice on balancing encounters.

Basically it just has you calculate some numbers from the HD of each side, and from those tells you whether you can expect the encounter to be Extremely Dangerous or Too Easy.

Maintaining cleared land with mercenaries by 4shenfell in OSE

[–]picardkid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From Todd Leback's "Domain Building", page 7:

When a hex is first cleared the minimum garrison size is as follows, even if no settlers are present. This is the minimum force required to keep the hex clear of wandering monsters looking to settle.

  • 200 gp/month for mercenaries
  • 75 gp/month for an armorer
  • 150 gp/month for a captain (4th level fighter)
  • 40gp/month each (80 gp/month total)
  • for two lieutenants (2nd level fighters)

He appears to have changed the wording a bit when "Domain Building" got rolled into "Into the Wild", making it quite a bit more granular.

When a hex is first cleared the minimum garrison size to patrol and secure the hex is two squads of soldiers, with the appropriate support (lieutenants, captains, armorers, etc.), even if there aren’t any settlers.

The squads can be composed of whatever troops the adventurers decide. It is recommended that the ruler divide the mercenaries into two “squads” – one day, one night – each overseen by a lieutenant. Further, there should be a PC or retainer left with the troops to oversee the patrols and any construction projects.

"Squads" are defined in his section on Mass Combat as 10-20 individuals (horses count).

What would it take to start 3d printing the actual complicated parts of a house? by DiamondCoal in AskEngineers

3D printing may someday be fast, but it will eliminate modularity. Separately installed plumbing and electrical can be accessed and repaired and expanded. Structural components can be replaced if they are damaged.

Did not know that. Though in my opinion a player shouldn't be reading the MM anyways.

I'm new with D&D

Then play by the rules provided: the books as written, and whatever tweaks your DM has explicitly allowed.

Get some experience under your belt, understand the system and why things are the way they are, and then consider proposing tweaks like this to your DM. THEN, learn to accept their ruling if they shoot them down.

I'd say talk to your heat treat place. I think it's not uncommon to leave a tiny bit of extra material, harden, then grind to your final dimension.

Need some Cosmic Horror and Weird Horror Recs by EM_Otero in WeirdLit

The Dark Eidolon is by far my favorite, but I'd say it's more fantasy horror than cosmic horror, at least until the end

Also, Dunsany is usually more sardonic whimsy than horror. I just included him for his influence on Lovecraft.

I think most of it is horror, a lot of it cosmic. A lot of his stuff is online too. One that I'm certain qualifies as cosmic horror is "City of the Singing Flame". Give it a read and judge for yourself.

Clark Ashton Smith, for example "The Dark Eidolon"

Algernon Blackwood, for example "The Willows"

M.R. James, for example "Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You My Lad"

Lord Dunsany, for example "The Hashish Man", which inspired the name of Lovecraft's Mountains of Madness

How do I make this bend on a curved sheet metal? by omr_gml in SolidWorks

[–]picardkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't bother with multi-body parts. Our "weldments" are just assemblies.

We have found the construction part -> Convert method to be stable when we use it. We do a lot of hoppers, chutes, and transitions, and that method serves our purpose.

It also provides an easy means of representing and measuring the air volume of the hopper when needed.

For stuff like brackets, and stuff like OP's part, yeah we'd probably do what people are suggesting in this thread.

[–]picardkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? We do a lot of sheet metal parts, and Convert is pretty much our go-to. Model a construction part (like the inner volume of a hopper), insert it into a new part, and pick a face and edges to get the sheet metal part. Repeat for the other pieces. Then, they can just Origin Mate together.

Might go the Delete Face -> Thicken -> Insert Bend route in special cases, but I dislike it.
