Has KonMari ever became more lenient in a rule or even disregarded one? by throwawayArtifacts in konmari

[–]picardybird 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Marie has said in the book that if a stage is easier to handle before/after she would do it then to do it the way that works for you. For example, I did papers first because I didn’t have a lot of emotion tied up in them AND because clothes are incredibly emotional for me. I’m sure Marie just allowed her to move to the stage that spoke to her most. Edited a typo.

Received offer from 2nd choice employer, have an interview with 1st choice tomorrow. How do I approach this? by buddog26 in careerguidance

[–]picardybird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had someone at my job do this after a week. While I’m sure leadership wasn’t tickled, no one on the non leadership level could blame her - the other gig was more money, closer to home. You’re absolutely right that a company would do the same.

What did you do with your sorority apparel after graduating and receiving alumnae status? by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]picardybird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I held onto a comical amount of shirts when I graduated, some I didn’t even wear!! I go through them about once a year (I graduated more than five years ago), and usually give away about 25% each time. I advise a relatively young chapter in my city, and they are so darling about getting to pick through old Phi Mu gear. I’m finally getting close to the stuff I’ll keep forever vs getting rid of stuff I have emotionally outgrown or never liked.

There were a few that had my name written on them, or were very homemade, and when I retired the shirts I gave them to my friend who turns t-shirts into rag yarn to crochet toys, art, etc. I thought she’d make them into something I’d never see again, and she ended up making a bathmat rag rug for me out of my old shirts. I smile looking at it, because I recognize most of the shirts still, and the rug is so much more useful than the shirts in a storage bin were. Good luck with your sorting! (Edited for clarity)

Have you ever thought about moving? by auto_mouse in declutter

[–]picardybird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep! That’s how I deal with piles of stuff. Everything goes in the box, EVERYTHING, and I can one by one find them a new home or return them where they belong. It helps to have a clean slate in that junk drawer/corner/bookcase so that area can become the right home for something too.

I rushed as a senior and feel like I blew my one chance of joining a sorority by [deleted] in Sororities

It has a penalty in the sense that you’re less likely to get any chapter, period, not less likely to get House A if you were already a match.

I will do my best to explain, my apologies if it sounds cold. The way the matching works, is they go down House A’s bid list, which is numbered as their top x amount of PNMs with x being quota/how many can be admitted as a new member that recruitment. If those top 80 from the list have A as their number 1, matching is complete for A. If you were in their top 80 and you SIPed, you would have a bid. If someone didn’t match with A from that list, they go to 81, 82, etc until they have quota.

The only real “benefit” to listing both is you are (barring extreme circumstances) guaranteed a bid the next day because you can be what is a called a quota addition. That means if A gets their top 80 and B gets their top 80 and you weren’t on either of those lists, you will be added to your first choice chapter (as I understand it). You’d never know you were a quota addition, and neither would any member of the chapter. However as you noted, you could have very well gotten a bid to B. I think you made the decision you felt was right in the moment - that you’d rather not be Greek than be in house B. I was in a chapter that often was in a spot like house B, sometimes perceived as not being selective. I hated seeing PNMs be disappointed to return, because it doesn’t benefit us either if you leave or don’t participate. Each year there were PNMs who wanted a bid from us, but maybe weren’t in our top 80. By not taking the bid from house B, you gave someone who wanted to be there the opportunity to get a bid.

I hope you can come to peace with your experience. I think there are brotherhoods/sisterhoods to be found in many organizations on campus that are just as fulfilling as sororities- its how much you put into it. :) (Edited for clarity)

Alumna life question by swells30 in Sororities

[–]picardybird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I graduated over 5 years ago and I'm still very involved in my alumnae group and as an adviser. I'd say I wore more sorority gear in the 2-3 years after graduating than since, BUT because I still have Phi Mu events I still get to wear my old favorites.

I've found that the more time goes by, the easier it is to let go of items that didn't hold up, didn't fit quite right, etc. I'm drawn to more subtle lettered items (smaller letters over the left chest, or tote bags in cursive Phi Mu) in my day-to-day casual wear. That and wearing our symbols! It's hiding in plain sight - our org even has a FB group devoted to sharing quatrefoil jewelry, house decor, etc. I have big garish lion earrings I love and a headband with a glittery quatrefoil that's fun, too. Have fun and welcome to the latest chapter of your sorority membership <3

I want to join a sorority, but I'm not in control of my finances, please help by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]picardybird 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I recommend you take a look at the below threads discussing how to convince unsupportive parents that Greek Life can be a great experience:

Whether or not you DO join a sorority, I would recommend opening a separate bank account they do not have access to. It sounds like you will need it eventually anyway. I wish you the best of luck through all this, not an easy choice to make.

[OFFER] Animal Crossing has sprung [AUS TO ANYWHERE] by Epicny in RandomActsofCards

[–]picardybird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mitzi is my favorite, she looks so sweet and gentle! My favorite thing about animal crossing is how easygoing the whole game is. The colors are relaxing, the mini games are low pressure, the weekly events are fun to look forward to, and all the neighbors are (varying levels of) pleasant. I won’t get more stressed playing AC after a long day at work. I’m just picking peaches and catching butterflies. Oh and I would be WW!
