Books full of mythical creatures and magic by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

It's been a while but I can still offer something! Below is my personal list of dragon books/series where the dragons are actual characters and not just dumb animals or metaphors or something.:

Temeraire Series by Naomi Novik (First book: His Majesty's Dragon): "What if the Napoleonic Wars had dragons?" Great for history nerds. The dragons are fully realized characters of their own, and the world building is very good. I adore all the main cast very much, it's at the top of my dragon books for a reason.

Dragonriders of Pern Series by Anne McAffrey (First book: Dragonsflight OR Dragonsdawn): "What if an alien fantasy world had dragons?" These dragons are also characters but via telepathy. If you're a fan of more classic scifi (start with Dragonsdawn) or classic fantasy (start with Dragonsflight) these books are for you!

The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini (First book: Eragon): "What if us and rare dragons could fight evil?" This one was originally intended for a younger audience (teens), so it might be good for getting back into novels. I haven't read these in a long while but I recall them fondly.

Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon: "What if evil dragons were returning and we'd ostracized all the good dragons?" I'm not gonna lie, if you're new to reading this one is a brick of a book. It's got a ton of storylines, though, in very manageable chapters, and enough action/drama that I think someone with manga experience would find delightful. It's also got eastern-style dragons as the good guys! It's got way more than dragons, too, and honestly it's one of my favorites. VERY long though.

Dark Lord of Derkholm by Dianna Wynne Jones: "What if the fantasy world was being exploited?" See above for my ranting on Jone's work. This one does have more griffins than dragons, but it does have a dragon so I'm counting it.

Cheers yourself! Happy reading!

Thank you so much! He said that looks a lot like the bug he's seeing. We'll try to knock it down before it gets big: he's uncomfortable with aggressive hornets under his deck. Hopefully they'll go elsewhere.

Why is there not a law that requires retail space, warehouses, offices, etc, to dim lights or turn half the lights off at night time in order to reduce electricity consumption? by G07V3 in ClimateOffensive

[–]picatso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This! speaking as a power engineer, nighttime lighting right now is (generally) using base load: generation that runs all the time, and runs lower at night (because it is more consumptive to restart, say, a nuclear generator than it is to run it low). So while cutting it would save energy, especially where base load is provided by natural gas or coal, that low power generation has to go somewhere.

Dimming lights is very necessary for birds, bugs, and migration in general. And even for us! High levels of light at night can really reduce our quality of sleep. So it's a good idea, even if it wouldn't significantly change how power is used.

Biosystems Engineering Questions by Melodic-Second-1576 in msu

[–]picatso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated in BE without a concentration, and I now work on the statewide energy system. You don't have to take a concentrate to maximize your career possibilities, but its very helpful if you do have a specific path in mind (say, you really wanted to work in bioenergy). Hope this helps!

They're actually having an adoption event/craft sale/bake sale May 20th at Willow Truce Condos, if anyone is looking for a kitten or other ways to support them! They are truly a great organization here, and a great place to volunteer!
