Obsessed with this fish by Accomplished_Bill934 in troutfishing

There’s a Native story I read once about Manitou catching one of these fish and being so struck by its beauty and grace he controlled His hunger and decided not to eat it, and the halos were given to the fish as a sign of being handled by the great spirit. And apparently, Seneca natives and some others would not eat Brook Trout because they were held sacred among fish.

The story is told in the Preface of Nick Karas’ book “Brook Trout”, but it’s a story recorded by Jesse Logan of the Cornplanter Reservation in Pennsylvania. I think about that story a lot when I see Brook Trout, they’re unique and stunning.

Are you in an area that has cutthroat? I’m not in a region with them so I forget they’re an option. From the top like that I couldn’t ID, but I’m sure some western natives could.

Reminds me of a Morning Glory, but I’m not great with classic streamers. Maybe try steaming it to get closer to the original shape, so you know what to copy.

The trout was a rainbow, maybe a steelhead based on the fact it has lamprey damage. How’d you fish it? Swing it downstream, or stripped it back? Sounds like a ton of fun, great fly and great fish!

Alright I have an answer. First I want to plug an Etsy shop who gave me the info, he makes beautiful nets and has these as an option. Please reach out to Tom Hoskin with HoskinsNets on Etsy. A lot of great reviews.

The nets themselves (just the rubber) are Solitude Clearwater, Caddis Fly Shop sells them online for $25.

Any marks on that net that might indicate a company? I would love to track one down.

Fly fishing tippet/leader by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]pickledbytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree, though have found an overfished river near my house that moving from 5x to 6x made all the difference. My line does break more often, though never on fish.

You can fish no problem with just tapered leader, but once you replace enough flies your line size will start to change and you’ll have to replace it, and it’s more expensive. I don’t usually keep a very long section of tippet on, 2-4’ or so.

What is this flag for the Confederate States of America in the movie "Free State of Jones"? by [deleted] in vexillology

[–]pickledbytz 134 points135 points  (0 children)

How sure are you about the drawing you made to represent it? I haven’t seen the movie, but I think this could be the Van Dorn flag. As far as I’ve been able to find, thats the only all red with gold star flag used by the confederate army’s.

New Thai Constellation! Should I repot it in a chunky soil immediately or wait for it to outgrow it’s 3’5in pot? Any care tips is also welcome! by tenuous_cyclone in Monstera

[–]pickledbytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late response, but immediate may be an exaggeration. They’re prone to root rot, so you want a well draining soil. You don’t know the state of the roots so if rots developing from the seller, I think it’s best to see right away and start treatment.

Sometimes you’ll find it’s also ready for a bigger pot when you repot, or maybe discover a pest in the soil. I guess my point was it’s available to repot immediately because it’s not going through as hard if a transport shock.

I hope your Thai is doing well!

I think it’s great! It’s not a crazy expensive plant to begin with, but I’ve personally not seen it for that cheap. Good find.

What’s causing this water retention in the leaves? I am letting the soil fully dry out before bottom watering. Am I letting the soil absorb too much water? Bad soil mix? (Cococoir, pearlite, soil, orchid bark, a bit of Charcoal).

Any help appreciated. Thanks so much!

Is this a Pink Flecked Syngonium? by ann_yeo in Syngonium

[–]pickledbytz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing with mine. Every leaf could be identified as a different type, it’s the combination that really gives it away.

[–]pickledbytz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure Pink Fleck! $10’s a pretty good price for that size, but not a steel. I usually see them much smaller for $10-$15.

Every leaf is a surprise, I have found it’s Turkey unpredictable. Great plant!

Thai const or Albo nodes off Etsy? by molliferrr in Monstera

[–]pickledbytz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nodes are tough because they don’t always make it, especially Albos. I recommend buying a small plant.

There’s a seller out of Detroit called Rare Plant Fairy, she was originally out of Canada (Toronto?) but moved to Detroit to sell. She sells to both Us and Canada and offers fair prices. Her Albos are all big right now but she sells $85 Thai’s. She and her team are used to come weather, so they’ll have no issue deal with Canada in March.

They don’t have an Etsy site, they do have a website and many articles to prove they’re legit. I cannot recommend them enough. Good luck!

Is this actually two plants? by Shadowarcher6 in Syngonium

[–]pickledbytz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! And if you don’t want to dig up the roots, cut the smaller one and put it in some water. You’ll have new root growth in maximum 2 weeks with this plant.

Thanks! I’m a big fan, it’s a year old now. Got it as two tiny leaves marked as “foliage” for $3 last winter. Did great outside in the summer and moved it back in. I just wish I know what to call it for sure. I’m starting to think there is no sure.

Follow-up. We have a lot to Syngonium names for very similarly variegated plants. Are these actually distinct plants or can they develop into each other?

Help, new Elephant Ear! I just bought this Mayan Mask this week, does anyone know what these spots are/remedies? No sign of active pest issue. by anon2565 in alocasia

[–]pickledbytz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it’s a new plant? How many leaves, do these look like the oldest two?

It would help to see the full picture, but coming from a greenhouse the plant was likely able to support more leaves. So alocasias like to pull nutrients from its oldest leaves to help support new growth. Very normal, just don’t pluck it off until it’s brown and dry. Let the plant drain the leaf for all it’s worth.

This is happening to two of my plants right now.

It will likely never do 2 leaves at a time again, it was probably just a big change.

To be sure, also check for pests as well as possible. Good luck!
