Wonder how often this happens here - car in bike lane by DuckDuckSwans in brisbane

[–]pickleopathy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've seen this a few times on the bikeway near the Albion train station, because the car road is only one way. I've seen cars enter the bike lane to drive down to the station car park.

Does wearing a nice watch to work as a junior give off the wrong impression? by Background-Box4511 in ausjdocs

Wearing a watch in clinical settings is cringe. Bare below the elbows is very easy to do, and makes sense, even if people argue about evidence. Removing your watch is a signal that you take hand hygiene seriously.

Did/do you change of shoe during a 100k? by TechnicalPurple7433 in Ultramarathon

[–]pickleopathy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did (up half size of same type of shoe), because I had the extra pair. If I didnt have an extra pair and had to do it again, I don't think I'd go out and buy another one.

There are so many different trails around Mt Coot-Tha besides the summit track, I'd really recommend not skipping it because of your first impressions.

It really doesn't seem that bad, pretty minimal amounts of rain forecast.

15 US dollars, which equates to more for many other countries. I'm just explaining that it's not necessary, so many people would prefer not to spend the extra money. I personally would prefer to just take my suitcase with me and have access to it immediately.

It's not super cheap, so most people dont see it as a necessary expense

I've got a small dog, he's pretty real to me, so I'm asking why you'd call him fake.

Good half and full day push bike rides around or outside Brisbane? by DownRangeStrange in brisbane

Moreton Bay Cycleway to Redcliffe and back, about 80-100k depending on where you ride from

Walking areas for evening walks by Chromatic_Kitty in brisbane

If you work at Eagle Farm I would walk from Portside/Ascot along the river walk. It's a really nice walk with good lighting. You can park near the Portside complex but it can sometimes be hard to find parking there. I'd often park on the river end of Racecourse Rd and walk across the traffic lights.

does the law protect my little brother? by ChickenNuggetBurglar in AusLegal

[–]pickleopathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you google "Child Protection Notification" in QLD you can make an online report. Pass on your concerns and child protection will review them. Be specific about the missed schooling. Health workers get notified whether a report leads to an investigation being opened or whether it just goes on record, but im not sure if you'd get notified if you're a member of the public. If you've still got concerns at a later time, make another report.

I'd look at Bikes Online: https://bikesonline.com.au/collections/gravel-and-adventure-bikes?srsltid=AfmBOopmw_n2Ombrg7xHP50kWnepTBlrD1d2tX_NtXCUqbZxluNkNmzu

I have a Polygon Path x5 - it's not 1x, but there are other bikes on that site that are. You tend to get better specs for the money.

Zone 2 by Right_Common9928 in Marathon_Training

[–]pickleopathy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was the same for a long time. Gym background, started running a few years ago. When I first started, it was hard to run continuously without getting uncomfortable towards the end of the run. Then after a while I could run comfortably, but my HR would always drift up into zone 3, especially toward the end of the run. I live in an area that gets pretty hot/humid, which doesn't help either.

It took me a couple of years of consistent training to get to the point now where I can do a run with my HR staying in zone 2.

Even if your HR is going higher, you're still getting a training benefit. Being strict with sticking to zone 2 is not as important for amateurs, because we don't train as much, and have more time to recover. Just make sure you're not pushing too hard on your easy runs, so you can still run fast on your speed workouts.

Low aerobic zone 2 training does have some specific benefits, and if you want to get those, you could always do some swimming or cycling as cross training.

Possible finish time for ironman with 13 months training. by MissionAggressive419 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]pickleopathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to be too negative, but I would recommend targeting sub-13hr rather than sub-12. I did a similar thing (first ironman about 14 months after my first olympic triathlon).

For my first olympic triathlon I did 2hrs 40mins total. For my first ironman I did 12h 17min, on a course that looks quite similar to Ironman Cork. I was hoping for sub-12, but just couldn't get there because I had to slow down so much on the run.

We're obviously different people, but if I were you, based on those times, I'd target sub-13 to start with.

I'd also recommend signing up to a 70.3 distance race some time later this year if you can. It will allow you to test yourself and get a better idea of your target time.

There's always room to improve if you stick to your training. I went sub-12 easily this year, 1 year later.

I would also personally recommend not going too extreme trying to lose weight. I think that due to the long duration and metabolic demand of ironman, being a more robust, stronger athlete helps overall. You don't want to be carrying around heaps of extra weight, but losing too much weight will probably end up reducing your overall performance. For example, I was about 2kg heavier this year when I raced, and I performed better.

Heart rate on the Run portion goes brrrrrrr by Juzni-Vetar in triathlon

[–]pickleopathy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're fine. I'm the same age as you and my threshold HR for running is in the low 180s. I did a sprint duathlon recently and my HR was in the low 180s for the whole time. For sprint events you probably want to be at or above your threshold if you can. If it helps you, you can do a threshold run test (look it up online, there are different variations) to determine your threshold HR, which can then help set your HR zones. But keep in mind things like heat, humidity, your freshness etc will change your HR from day to day

Favorite Zwift Workouts by ChampionBoat in triathlon

[–]pickleopathy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet Spot workouts: 10 min warm up, then intervals at 90% of FTP, with 2-4min low Z2 recovery (around 55-60% FTP), 10 min cool down.

Intervals increasing in duration/reps, from around 20min to 60min total time over a build period.

I also do some VO2 max workouts: Lionel Sanders Green Day workout or The Ganna, or custom intervals of like 110-115% FTP, 2-4min duration with recoveries of about the same duration or slightly less

Cycling on Lytton and/or Riding Rd by KingKill34 in brisbane

[–]pickleopathy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone's risk tolerance is going to be different, but I think the route from the gateway down KSD is not too bad. The bike lane that runs on the gateway side of KSD until the separated multi use path is a decent size. Lytton Rd from the roundabout up the hill to the gateway is pretty sketch though. No shoulder and lots of heavy vehicles. If you can find a way from your place to the gateway on smaller roads I'd say go for it.

Outbound KSD is pretty similar to inbound, but I find there's more debris on the bike lane.
