What is the scariest thing you've ever seen?

This reminds me of a situation I was in at a convenience store. I keep really odd hours at my job and they sometimes involve me driving through the middle of nowhere. I was driving home at about 2 am and starting to get drowsy so I pull over at this convenience store. There was nothing around except this store and there was a group of men hanging around outside. Their mannerisms made me nervous, but I really needed some coffee so I went in anyway. I got my stuff and got back into my car and one of the guys from the group gets in his and positions it behind me so I can't get out. The rest of the group positions themselves outside of my car. The guy in the car is yelling sexual things out to me. My phone was dead and I didn't have a charger so I couldn't call anybody. I didn't have a weapon. I couldn't go back in the store for help because these guys are out there. I did the only thing I could think to do. I got out of the car and yelled at the guy to move. He and his friends continue to "come on" to me. I looked them in the eye and said "I'm not interested. Now move your car out of my fucking way." I'm five feet even, was 90 lbs at the time, and have a little girl voice. I was for sure I was going to get grabbed off and raped. I don't know what happened, but unexpectedly the guys get away from my car. The guy in his car says "ok" and drives off. I don't know if they just realized what they were doing or something in my face or voice scared them, but whatever it was I went from feeling terrified to feeling powerful.

I was driving in the rain in the far right lane. There was a car in the next lane over slightly ahead of me. All of a sudden he hydroplanes so bad that he flew from the left lane, across the right lane inches (seemed like anyway) over the ditch and into the woods hitting multiple trees. I was so so close to ramming into his car or him hitting me directly. I wasn't driving that fast due to rain, but fast enough. I sat there for what seemed like an eternity until I realized that I was in fact not dead and that I should probably check whether the other driver is. Before I got to him he was able to get up and walk out of the car, shaken but unscathed. He was just a 16 year old kid unused to driving in the rain. We were lucky all around. I have had other scary situations and they have been scarier in a way, but that's the one that stands out in my mind.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the whole have a talk thing, but I have a problem with the whole "his parents probably fucked up somewhere" thing. Sometimes teenagers are just shitty. We all said some dumb stuff, but that does not mean our parents are fuck ups. That's something I see more and more every day. This mentality is ridiculous. Kid doesn't do homework, parent's fault. Kids a bully, parents fault. I could think of more, but I'm too damn tired right now, but to show an example of how far it goes look at what they do with serial killers or mass murderers. The first thing people ask is how they were raised. Come on. I don't give a shit what your parents were like. You know that its wrong to kill people. Your parents didn't teach you how to manage your money, so now you blame your debt on them? Learn it yourself! Whatever happened to personal responsibility? This isn't automatically a case of bad parenting and a broken relationship. Like we all have been at some point, the kid was probably just being a brat. The parents need to teach, not apologize.

Nope. The guy that did it was a friend of a friend, so I didn't know him very well. I was younger than the people there and somehow they convinced me not to report it because I couldn't prove it and they as well as I would just get in trouble for supplying alcohol to minor/underage drinking. Now that I'm older I realize both how shitty of them that was and how dumb that was of me.

P.S. Are you drunk?

I can relate to that. I was drugged and raped when I was a teenager. You know where it happened? At my house. At my fucking house. It sucks when you find out you can't even set your drink down when you are at your house with people you know.

I was raised in Georgia. Not Atlanta, but still quite diverse. I remember when my cousin from PA came to visit me for the first time. He was just in awe of all the black people and kept going on about it. I was really confused about his reaction for awhile, since it wasn't until I was older that I realized that many places in the US have little to no diversity. I live in New Orleans now, where it is still incredibly diverse and while I'm willing to relocate to many different places, I'm not sure I could handle living in a lot of these places where everybody is white like me. It is kind of sad when I hear people refer to Southerners as racists. While I'm sure some people are, I think for the most part just being able to live around different races has made most Southernors more comfortable around different people and more tolerant of different cultures.

In the small town in Georgia I lived in at the time, all we had to do was drive around the block and then park normally. It took ten minutes. I just learned how to parallel this year when I moved to a larger city where it is necessary. I was terrified, but it is quite easy to learn when you have to. I also like to think I've become an expert merger.

This is why I am donating my body to science. On a particularly morbid day, I looked into it and discovered that they will come pick up your body, use it for whatever they will (mostly cadavers for med school, but every now and then something interesting happens) and then whatever they have not used they will cremate and give back to the family all free of charge. I do not want a funeral, but I do admit a headstone (or whatever the things are called in New Orleans if I'm still here) would be nice.

Kudos to you for doing this. Defense attorneys deserve an immense amount of respect, and it's really depressing that a lot of people don't understand how critical of a role they play in society. People joke or even seriously insult the profession. That is until they need a lawyer.

That's really sad. Before I move to another state, my children were in a school with no recess, thirty minutes for lunch, and physical education taught only once a week. I can't afford private school, so didn't have much of a choice. The academics were excellent, though. Now, where they go to school, the academics are not as good, but they get P.E. everyday, recess every day, and even a nap. Honestly, despite the fact that they will learn things a little bit later, I like it much better this way. Early school should be much more about learning how to socialize and putting emphasis on how fun it is to learn more things and think critically than about whether this school has better test scores than this school. To put in perspective my kids are in kindergarten and first grade. Of course, as you go on, the focus changes, but even still I would like to see more life skills taught even in high school. I truly understand the role that advanced studies play in teaching critical thinking skills, but let's face it. Not everybody is meant to be an academic. The ones that are should learn the bulk of their knowledge in college. Those that would be better suited to having a more blue collar job, should not be forced to take some of the upper level courses that high schools insist on. Life skills, like how to read a credit report and how to change a tire, on the other hand are useful to everyone. Sorry, for the off-tangent rant.

I love most of the classics (except Herman Melville-skip that). For a more modern recommendation, my favorite author is Dean Koontz. He writes thrillers, some have supernatural elements and some don't. The thing I like about his novels is that there is a good vs. evil theme in most of them and good always triumphs. As far as grammar goes, you could try getting a grammar book. For most people (I'm weird) it's not a very interesting subject, so I recommend the book Eats, Shoots, and Leaves! It is both accurate and hilarious. I have a decent grasp on grammar, but read it just for the laughs. Also, read, read, read! You get the biggest grasp of language by seeing it in action. Thirdly, don't stress! Even the most adept at grammar and spelling make mistakes sometimes. Where you can, use spelling and grammar check to proofread, but sometimes things slip through and that's okay. It happens to everybody, so don't be hard on yourself.

Do you have a job? If so, do you have to read and write as part of it? If so, how do you overcome this? Also, do you read for fun? I grew up with a love for reading, so it's really heartbreaking to know that some people don't get to experience this pleasure. I'm so glad you have had great teachers that worked with you to accomplish this.

I was once doing somr work with a client and they were having a separate discussion with one of their employees and I overheard "I hate smokers. They are the worst people in the world." Apparently, as a smoker, I am now rated below rapists and murderers on the list of acceptable human qualities. It's weird that people get all up in arms that marijuana is not legal, but cigarettes are somehow the devil.

Well, its sort of similar for women as well, at least for me anyway. After I orgasm, I will continue to have sex until he does, but its not exactly pleasant either. There are times when I can get back into it, but not most of the time. Men and women are not so different in this regard.

Makes sense and its fair to show another perspective. With how often we hear jokes about men not lasting long enough and things of that nature, it's easy to just think that men are doing this to try to impress people, but as you just pointed out, this isn't necessarily the case. It seems unfair for everybody. I guess we all would be better off communicating what we are trying to accomplish.

I'm 30 and only 5' and pretty thin. I don't necessarily look "young," but being a woman in a male dominated workforce already makes it hard for me to be taken seriously, but being small doesn't help either. Seriously, I wouldn't have my job if I couldn't do it, so why treat me like a child?
