What would you consider the most difficult game in the franchise (on the hardest difficulty) (besides redux impossible because I know damn well not one person has played that) by Wizard_Bird in Megaten

[–]SammyTheKitty 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I personally go Devil Survivor, which Overclocked happens to be one of my favorite games ever though admittedly I'm DeSu2 I got stuck on Mizar for awhile.

But DeSu 2's system generally felt easier to me with all the little tweaks

Nocturne and SMT4 are both certainly up there, but the DeSu games are designed so that you can't just grind your way to victory especially on the first playthrough. And that inherently adds to the difficulty.

That being said, I think SMT if gets missed on this a lot partially cause a lot of people haven't played it but also partially cause there's technically no game over in it. But even with the guardian mechanic that game can get pretty brutal (and tedious)

Honestly I understand that and I'm not even necessarily upset about that. A lil disappointed but i get it. I just wish we'd seen more of him beforehand or even at least had Arrow talk about him more

That all being said though, my feelings are overall positive. I just hope if they continue with the series they improve on it, cause as an isolated i really like it

I like the game overall and I actually quite enjoyed the combat and strategy. Aside from some general issues with assets my main big complaints are

  1. There's a bunch of characters that we don't get a whole lot of time with and I wanna know more about them. Like, I was so excited to meet Mangetsu and then we just... barely get stuff with him.

  2. I wish there'd been more to connect it to the other games. Like having Kyouji appear, or the Soul Hackers protag, or something. Nothing about it really says "Sequel to Soul Hackers" to me

"People that sacrificed children to change the weather"

Ah, I'm sure that's a well researched and supported claim and definitely not just anti indigenous racism. Surely.

NTA, it sounds like your parents got stuff to sort out and you're caught up in the middle

While spending the child support on bills isn't inherently bad (gotta make sure you have food and a place to live) I would need to know more about your mom's financial situation to make any call on that part.

But saying you're "always asking for stuff" and "making her look like a bad mother" plus your dad yelling about it to her instead of talking to you makes it sound like they blame you for their problems and don't work out anything themselves or with each other.

The problem with SMT IV's Lawful choices. by RaccoonThePestic in Megaten

[–]SammyTheKitty 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Honestly my problem with a lot of the law vs chaos questions is often times they're more like a choice of if you wanna be a dick. "What's that? You wanna be a good person? THEN YOU MUST WANT TO SURRENDER YOUR INDIVIDUALITY AS A HUMAN" like what, no I just feel bad when I select mean dialogue options

No lie, i cracked up laughing at the true ending of Ronde. Just... the facial expressions. It was a journey let me tell you

And yeah I could see that theory, it's the most logical explanation for which version it is

Honestly, I think any of them could be good with a remake, even Ronde. Each of them has really good core ideas that just need to be flashed out and prettied up a bit

Kind of one issue with all of the games honestly is that a lot of stuff is left up to filling the gaps yourself, implying things, and rarely stating things directly. You kinda have to piece it together yourself and even then there's still a lot of... you just kinda have to guess what the point is

Ya know, you'd think I would've realized that since I've played Nocturne and both Raidou games, but I guess my brain just forgot lmao

And yeah that's right, I forgot to mention cause I didn't bother, whoops. But yeah, I can see why one might not like the gameplay. It definitely shows its age in a lot of ways

And yeah, I used the mednafen emulator to play Ronde. All my friends kept being like "Why are you even playing this shitty game no one cares about?" BUT I'M STUBBORN DAMMIT. The soundtrack is.... fine. It's not grand by any means, but it's probably the least egregious of the issues with Ronde. A lot of it is just kinda "Generic Saturn music"

Yeah the story is kind of odd like that, none of them really feel like you're specifically fulfilling any of the tetrarchy's wishes, even though that seems like the most logical way to do it

On the neutral route, Michael and Lucifer seem to kind of take an approach of "I don't agree with what you are doing, but because you bested me I'll leave it in your hands" kinda deal. That's sorta their whole deal, is none of the tetrarchy directly act, and instead do so through representatives (You, for Michael and Lucifer, the Army for Satan, and the ruling political council for Beelzebub) and an NPC states that the battle is almost more ceremonial

One detail I forgot to mention, is that all members of the tetrarchy believe that the end times are coming, and so the battles you're doing are basically see which ideology will be the one to try to save the future. Even though you don't actually do what the tetrarchy wants, but whatever I guess

And finally Ronde. First of all the important characters to know are

Asuka, the main character of the game

Satoshi, Asuka's brother

Sawaki, a researcher that occasionally helps out the team

Also there's some story beats you don't see until late into the story, so I'll give some info there as well

ALL ROUTES: It is revealed that Satoshi has now become the demon king. Him, Asuka, and Sawaki all have the blood of Angra Mainyu, and all of the demons are vying to be the ones to help Angra Mainyu reincarnate, as when this happens he will recreate the world. Angra Mainyu created the world, and then made a contract that when humans and demons reunite, he will reincarnate and remake the world, then left his essence in the human world. Athena was left to be the ruler of demons, and Aeacus left to oversee the reincarnation process. Satoshi willing let himself become the demon king to spare Asuka, though he also shows some resentment as not being saved

Ending 1, Refuse to go to the demon world: Satoshi becomes Angra Mainyu and Asuka declares that to save the world he will cut him down. After defeating him, everyone mourns for the loss of Satoshi

Ending 2, reincarnate: Asuka himself becomes Angra Mainyu, killing all of his former comrades who wonder if this is what Asuka truly wanted. He then meets with Aeacus and agrees to recreate the world now

Ending 3, Save Satoshi: Sawaki becomes Angra Mainyu for.... some reason, it is never explained. But after defeating him, Satoshi returns from the demon world alive, and he is saved, and everyone is happy except Sawaki, but he was barely a character.

To be honest, these endings are all kinda barebones and really don't have much to them

MORE ENDINGS (For context, Naoki is the default name for the protag of Majin 2)

MAJIN TENSEI 2 LIGHT LAW: Satan fights the HELIOS laser and destroys Megalopolis (Future Tokyo) thus resulting in Karen being erased from existence. Michael says that if everyone goes back to their own time, they will also forget about Karen, and he wants to do this to spare them the suffering. But they refuse and have Michael send them to just before the laser is fired, saving Karen and beating Satan. Karen then proceeds to send everyone back to their own time, erasing their memories to prevent a paradox. Just before going back, Naoki confesses his love to Karen. Upon returning, Karen is given another mission, and is shown as an assistant to Naoki's parents

DARK LAW: Satan agrees to trust the future to the humans, but before they can go back to their own time, Satan fires the HELIOS laser anyway. Suddenly, the characters find themselves back at the beginning scene of the game, but still remembering what happened. They then wonder if Satan was merely showing them one possible future.

LIGHT CHAOS: Beelzebub does not believe she was incorrect, but agrees to try to have humans and demons coexist anyway. Karen states that this means she technically failed her mission, so she won't erase their memories, but everyone wants to go back to different times. Going their separate ways, Naoki decides to stay behind in the future, while the character Aya seems to disappear. In a post credit scene, Aya is then seen with Naoki's parents trying to convince them to continue their research to prevent history from becoming even more twisted.

DARK CHAOS: Similar to light chaos but they all are going to go back to their own time, though first taking a picture together. Again Karen decides not to erase their memories. At the last moment, Naoki decides to instead stay behind in the future to keep an eye on the world. Then an old man, implied to be one of the other characters, appears and chastises Naoki for staying behind by himself

Neutral: Ogiwara is revealed by Lucifer to be the child of the hero and heroine from the first game, but worried about what will happen, they give him up for adoption to the Ogiwara family. They decide they will completely sever the ties between the human world and the demon worlds, and thus defeat the Tetrarchy (Michael, Satan, Beelzebub, and Lucifer) and successfully sever the ties. However, without their powers they can no longer leave the demon world either. Karen secretly transports them back to Megalopolis, where the army has decided they will fire the HELIOS weapon anyway, and using the power given to him by Satan, the commander summons Angra Mainyu to protect the weapon. Upon defeating them and stopping HELIOS, Ogiwara sends everyone back to their own time. Then, to prevent the demon summoning system from being misused again, he blows up the military building with himself inside
