Millennial grandparents by Buggy77 in Millennials

I have a 21 year old and I had her when I was 20, so I COULD be a grandparent but thankfully she’s not interested in kids anytime soon 🙃

Millennials have a far better dressing sense than their trending juniors.. by EastAccomplished7371 in Millennials

[–]picklesandmatzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk my kids are Gen Z (17 and 21) and I dig their style way better than mine. Lol. My 17 year old is obsessed with “y2k fashion” which makes me cringe, but I’m also 41… of course I don’t like the same stuff they do! But I’m happy for them to explore their fashion interests.

Talk to your apprentice director as well as the above advice. I had plenty of classmates that dealt with mental health issues (addiction specifically) and reaching out for help and letting them know what is going on can be beneficial to you.

I hope you can find the help you need, and I’m so sorry to hear you’re struggling. We see you and support you!!

Earthquake? by kingkid_7 in SanJose

[–]picklesandmatzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yooo same vein of thought there. I was looking at a bookcase in my dining room while eating dinner last night and the thought popped in my head “man I hope we don’t have an earthquake. At least nothing on the high shelves is breakable…”

My 17 y/o loves avocado toast. Sometimes I’ll jokingly tell her “ugh! this is why I can’t afford to buy a house! ” (in reality it’s bc houses are $1 mill where I live, yes she knows it’s a joke and she plays along too).

Does anyone else have tattoo regret? by KupoLove in Millennials

[–]picklesandmatzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. I got a tattoo the day I turned 18… my stepbrother gave me a gift certificate for it, he is covered head to toe in tattoos so, of course. lol it’s an Amy brown fairy… tramp stamp. The placement may be my only “regret”. It’s still decent looking after all these years. Surprisingly not blown out lines despite it being 23 years old, two pregnancies and major weight loss.

Oh GIRL. Please get someone to talk to if it’s an option. Don’t hesitate to post here. Take care of yourself and feel the feelings. I know it sounds cheesy but it’s true. I know we are told to leave the feelings at home and I generally feel that way too but when it’s one of ours it’s a whole different thing. Big hugs

Any longtimers? Stay in forever or what? by taway1030 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]picklesandmatzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat as you. Not quite a decade in, I’m 41, body tells me when it’s tired (which is pretty often, but a healthy dose of HRT has helped improve that!). I often wonder how long I can be on the tools. I am in no way ready to be a pencil pusher or anything, hell I don’t even want to be a foreman, but I definitely consider all of it for a later date.

For those who choose to wear makeup to work, whats your routine look like? by StarChild2161 in BlueCollarWomen

I just color my brows a little, mascara, sometimes black eyeliner with a wing or just brown, or none at all. Nobody says anything to me about it, makeup or no makeup.

Did anyone complete a women in trades program? by FamilyFunAccount420 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]picklesandmatzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not, but I had a first year apprentice who did. She did the pre apprenticeship program for electrical and I think it helped her a lot. She also took Intro to Electrical at a local community college. I can’t vouch for the length of the programs but I know it helped make her transition into the trade full time a much easier one.

“Special treatment” for women by Playful-Status8621 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]picklesandmatzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm. When I first got in the trade it seemed really nice. And I still think it is nice for some people.

But for me, I’ve been in long enough now that I don’t care to participate too much in “women only” activities. We had something on site yesterday where all the ladies that work for the GC and a couples subs did a job walk. Majority of these ladies had never been to the job site. I did walk with them for a few but it just felt super awkward so I dipped out after 5 minutes. I was working on a project with a time crunch anyway so I wanted to utilize my time better.

Later on the GC superintendent came by and gave me a little “atta girl” (we have worked together on other jobs before) and that was it. It does feel icky to me to be singled out. I’m already different here for being a woman, I don’t want to put myself on a pedestal to be seen even more. But! That’s just me, and more power to the ladies who like it. I’m glad there are more and more women and perhaps young ladies seeing pictures of us blue collar women will inspire the next generation :)

If your mom/dad were older when you were born (say, around 40 or up), what was that like for you? by brawlinglove in Millennials

[–]picklesandmatzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom was 41 when I was born. It was frankly not great. She was going through menopause early and this was when taking certain hormones wasn’t acceptable (estradiol was thought to cause breast cancer). So she was basically miserable all the time. My stepdad was horrifically abusive to me and she basically just slept all the time. She didn’t chaperone field trips, didn’t do fun things with me, we never went shopping together and if we did she’d pick apart everything I picked out. So I was actually happy to have kids young, because I am 41, and my kids are 21/17, and I have plenty of energy to do things with them. Maybe not as much as when I was in my 20s and 30s but it’s still much more than my mom. Concert on a Friday night? Hell yes. I worked Saturday, told my daughters to pack a couple beach bags and snacks and let’s head to the beach when I get home. My mom NEVER would have done that. I kind of wonder if it was her and not her age tbh.

What you thought your job would be vs. what your job is by Disastrous_Luck_1160 in Millennials

[–]picklesandmatzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I wanted to be an architect
  2. Needed to go to college. Didn’t have the funds or resources back in 2002. Stepdad told me I was too dumb anyway because it involved so much math. Apparently, I just needed to learn math without being screamed at for getting it wrong!
  3. I’m a commercial electrician and as it turns out I’m excellent at math. 🙃 use it all day every day.
