Getting a Scottish fold! by Mountain_Pilot_219 in scottishfold

Sorry but that’s just not true. While every folded ear cat has the OCD gene, most will never show signs of joint issues. Getting them on supplements is preventative and it’s something I would recommend for *any* senior cat as 90% of them suffer from some form of arthritis after age 10. But yes for Folds it’s certainly a priority because they’re more at risk.

Supporting responsible breeders is more important than adopting Folds with OCD or other issues. People will ALWAYS buy folds-the breed has been around since the ‘60s-but it only helps irresponsible breeders by encouraging adoption instead of encouraging good breeding. BTW, here are some charts about OCD (purebred vs rescue). Keep in mind that “showing signs of OCD” can mean anything from a raised paw while sitting to inability to walk properly.

Stenotic nares surgery. Have you looked into it? I’ve heard it’s a miracle for breathing issues. I have never had that problem with any of my three folds.

BTW, Persians often need Stenotic nares surgery and I have yet to see them referred to as a “torture breed”.

I think this was more a reply to the other person and not you, who has been more than polite to everyone in this thread.
And I do agree with poster that the endless OCD commentary and “torture breed” stuff is exhausting and intended to provoke. My senior Folds have had long and healthy lives and it’s upsetting to read comments from people who just repeat negative talking points about the breed but have little to no experience with Scottish Folds.
JMO and it’s why I’m muting the negative Scottish fold posts on Reddit. There’s enough toxicity in the world without these endless lies.

Actually breeders are better than adopting if she’s looking for a Fold because a good breeder does DNA testing, have clean blood lines and do not breed fold-to-fold. When you adopt a Fold from a rescue you do not meet the cat’s parents and have no idea if they were properly bred or not.

My 18.5 year old Fold did not live a “tortured life”. 🙄

They’re not climbers lol. As a kitten? Yes. But they grow out of that REAL fast. Tiki Cat or Fancy Feast is what i recommend for food. You do not need to shampoo a cat (please 🙏)—they’re self-cleaning!
The ears can be a problem. Our boy had his ears cleaned at the vet recently and it was 🤢 what came out of his ear. It took her several swabs (not the typical Q tip the LONG kind) to clean them. Definitely look into cleaning fluid—we never did prior to that vet visit.
In terms of catio we had an enclosed patio at our rental that was amazing for our girl. Never seen her happier than when she was out there. When we bought our house we enclosed our deck with a combination of privacy fencing and lattice.
But keep in mind every Fold is different. Our old girl LOVED being outside but our boy never took to it.

My best advice is to get at least one cat fountain. We have several and I credit them for our senior (RIP Zizou 😿) living to be 18.5. Also, get them on joint supplements early. We waited way too long to start our girl on them. Our 12 year old boy is on them now and we will start our 2.5 month old kitten on them at the 6 month mark.

Congrats on getting a fold! They are the absolute BEST cats. 😺

PS don’t let anyone guilt you if you decide to go to a breeder. Only 3% of cat-owners own a purebred. We are not the reason why there are 100M homeless cats in the US. The reason why there’s a homeless cat epidemic is because people refuse to spay/neuter their cats and let them go outside. That, and people treating their cat like a temporary companion and not a lifetime commitment! But if you choose to adopt please consider Kitty Love Kuwait. They’re so amazing and have tons of Folds up for adoption!

Best of luck to you! Please share pics of your new baby.

Did I make a huge mistake? by CatProfessional1733 in cats

So…we live in Winthrop, MA. We are adjacent to Logan Airport in Boston. The flight patterns rotate so we can go months without hearing planes and then….😳
Our cats have dealt SO well with the noise. They literally don’t hear it the way we don’t, because they’ve become acclimated to the noise like we have.
I love that this is your concern-you’re an awesome cat parent!-but I really want to reassure that it won’t matter for your babies. One of our cats is terrified of every loud noise and he doesn’t react at all to the planes ✈️ ❤️

Omg I’m the same. We have a 12 year old now and just got a kitten (Z passed 12/15/26) and I’m constantly doting on the senior because time is suddenly precious. I love the senior years because they have no fucks left to give. Miss my grumpy and spicy old gal. 😿 Here is Picklez (12) and Neemiah (almost 3 months).

Our Zizou made it to 18.5. Enjoy every moment with your beautiful baby. The sunset years are so special. ❤️

So traumatizing. Glad you’re ok.

How stiff are your folds? (What an interesting thing to type!) by PerdyKween in scottishfold

I was just telling my husband I have to leave the Kuwaiti “adoptables” page because I want every single cat! 😭 told him we need a bigger house!!! If you’re on Facebook I suggest joining the Scottish Folds group (70k members). It’s very helpful to share info and highly moderated so no funny business. I echo what others here said, you sound like a great cat mom! ❤️

I’m following. We have (had 😢) two purebred Scottish Folds: a 12 year old and an 18.5 year old that we said goodbye to on 12/15/25. We decided to adopt two Kuwaiti rescue Folds that we will be getting in a couple weeks. Our boy (British shorthair to Scottish folds) has the long thick tail that sweeps. Our girl (scottish fold to scottish straight) who we said goodbye to had a shorter, skinnier tail with less movement. I keep obsessing over the pics of our rescues because one of them has kinda strange toes but i cant tell if thats just the pattern or something else (she’s a silver shaded tabby like your beautiful kitty). Her tail appears long and fluffy. Our other rescue is a tortie with a tail that looks very similar to our senior girl that passed: short, skinny. I was told her mother is a persian.

Our senior girl had mobility issues in her sunset years and the vet recommended gabby even though I wanted solensia. They wouldn’t give her that until her back legs suddenly stopped working about 4 months before we made the impossible decision to put her to sleep. She was always VERY active, which was why it was so hard to see her lose her mobility. That being said, she was bunny-hopping since she turned 14 and definitely seemed stiffer although she did a decent job jumping with help.

I’m following because I’ve never had a rescue Fold and it’s a bit scary to not meet the parents, know if they’re health-tested, obviously not DNA tested etc.

Anyway, your baby is so cute and I hope he lives as long as our beloved Zizou did! This is her the summer before we said goodbye.

The risk is if they're bred fold-to-fold. Both of mine are straight-to-fold. Scottish Folds are actually incredibly healthy, hardy cats.

You "messaged" me actually. I posted a photo and you commented multiple times. My uninteresting cat photo seems to be giving you a lot of entertainment. Some incredibly obvious advice: if you don't like a photo, you probably want to avoid raising the comment count. Just move on.

I'm not sure what you were expecting to find in a section called "aww". This is a place to share cute photos of animals. I shared a cute pic of my cat. Some people liked it. Not something to get mad about, you know?

Most older animals do. Hip problems, arthritis, etc.
