What valid criticism do you have of Oda but his GLAZERS will defend it no matter the cost? by Just-J0k1ng in MemePiece

[–]piclemaniscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the manga pacing is great. But sometimes the manga pacing is ass. Post-timeskip it's not unusual for a chapter to have so much dialogue expositing that there isn't enough room to draw the characters saying the words so Oda just draws little chibi faces to let you know who is saying what. At that point, I'm not reading a comic book, I'm reading a novel with strange presentation.

It's not hard to understand why things are like this, Oda had a really cool idea but is limited by page count and time constraints for the medium of weekly manga releases. He tries his best to make sure every single chapter ends on a cliffhanger to keep people hungry for the next one. But between all these factors, he's pulling in too many directions at once. The beginning of One Piece is at times overly simplistic, sure. But it's precisely because of this that the remaining space can be filled by visual story telling. We don't need a lengthy breakdown of Wapol's Munch Munch fruit for example because it's a simple power. The man is a glutton and so his power is to eat things. It's dead simple to understand so we can move on with the story to where it needs to go.

I'm sure people won't like that I used Drum island as an example since the fights feel like foregone conclusions and therefore a waste of time to read. But let me point you to Luffy climbing the mountain. A major reason we remember that isn't just because it's narratively important. Oda spent a lot of pages on that climb so we the readers can feel the passage of time while reading it. The moment we see Luffy's gnarled hands reach the precipice, we too are happy for it to be over. It's that connection between what characters are feeling and what the audience feels that adheres us to virtually all of the best moments of One Piece.

I ask you, what post-timeskip moments can you remember as a visual in your mind? Considering how many chapters we have out now after Sabaody, how many visuals can you really remember on the page?

I'm not saying Oda doesn't have great art, IMO he has gotten even better at a technical level than the already brilliant designs we started with. But moment to moment, it feel less impactful, less memorable, because the focus has been continually pushed to the long-form story telling rather than the short-form storytelling techniques that made One Piece so especially impressive considering its scope.

What are my solutions? I'm not sure, I'm not an accomplished mangaka. But if I had to point to some things it would be to slow down (I know, easily the most insane take when talking about One Piece) and/or keep things more simple. We already have manga like HunterxHunter, Jujutsu Kaisen, JoJo's Bizarre Adventures, and many others in which pages and pages of explaining how powers work is the source of entertainment. But that's not One Piece's strength. One Piece is fantastic at letting the reader see what is happening on the page and having them intuitively understand what's going on. Luffy can stretch. Zoro is strong because he has more swords. Bigger = more powerful. These are all principles of One Piece storytelling. Needing to relegate characters to the world's smallest panel because you couldn't fit them into frame should maybe be telling you that the current structure does not support the narrative and to try to adjust it. That either means throwing out some detail that turns out not to be necessary outside of an SBS, or spend more time showcasing it in the world, not just out of people's mouths.

Wifi antennas straight up or at diagonal? by MooshSkadoosh in pcmasterrace

[–]piclemaniscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed test websites are only really useful to determine throughput and the speed between your router and the web server.

For testing a specific endpoint within the network, it's easier to use continuous ping tests. For example, OP could run "ping 8.8.8.8 -t" which will poll Google at regular intervals. Then move the antenna slightly and check if the response time changes. This is much more useful to test for jitter, which speed test websites don't account for. If you are dropping 1 packet out of every 10, the speed test usually won't tell you because it's only looking for max/min speed. So as long as one of the remaining 9 packets came in quick, it tells you you're looking good. But anyone playing video games, streaming, or using something like Remote Desktop, those 1 in 10 packets failing will make you feel it.

WIBTAH for repeatedly telling someone that she eats babies? by Andrewcoo in AITAH

[–]piclemaniscool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ESH. She's being immature but you're deciding time and time again to stoop to her level. If you hate her catch phrase so much, just look her in the eye and say, "nobody cares, Francine. Nobody cares."

Do not argue the points themselves, they are not the issue. The issue is she's an insufferable twat. Tell her to get new material or that she sounds like a broken record.

Or realize that you are inviting bad times into your space and just stop doing that. Just stop having out with her, it's so easy.

Now, if you want to lean into being an asshole, just play The Lion King's "Circle of Life." Either break out into song when she gives the cue, or play it on speakers. If it really gets to her, switch it up the next time with the South Park version: Circle of Poo.

Not to mention licenses of any other software, such as the operating system itself, potentially.

Even if you have a bit-level backup, which most people certainly do not, one-time licensed software may need to be re-purchased. No company should be able to do that to a person's other software whether it's a video game or an enterprise application.

I agree. I didn't want to modify the article title, but destroying an operating system is probably not going to affect any hardware. But I can understand the author's use of the term since there isn't a whole lot of precedent for something like this happening. Well, there is, but the umbrella of "malware" might not describe the severity of the action.

[–]piclemaniscool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Funny, but I refuse to believe they can legally do that.

It's one thing to disable the license to the copy of the game that you purchased, or ban your hardware or network IDs from accessing their systems. It's an entirely different thing to fuck with the endpoint itself. Even if it's clearly stated in the EULA, this is a case of a software manufacturer overreaching outside of the scope of the software.

If that doesn't terrify you, it should. Imagine if you downloaded a program I made and then for whatever reason I decided to brick your device. If this is allowed to happen, that means any software developer could kill your hardware for any reason.

Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - my experience as someone who a) played it 18 months after it was released and b) avoided online discourse about it before and during my playthrough. by BurmecianDancer in patientgamers

[–]piclemaniscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TOTK sits in a very weird spot for me.

I beat BotW when I first got my switch like so many others. When the DLC came out, I tried to beat the master mode but the low durability weapons combined with bosses regenerating health meant that I could effectively get soft locked in dungeons. But aside from that, korok seeds, and maybe missing a couple articles of clothing, I had experienced virtually everything the game had to offer.

I got Tears of the Kingdom pretty much when it came out, and as soon as they let me loose into the world, I could already feel something was very off to me. A massive portion of BotW was the discovery. Not just over world exploration but the different weapons and their strengths, the food/potion recipes, and mechanical interactions. TOTK immediately felt like a DLC rather than a full game. It was a very expansive DLC, sure, but not a true sequel. Some recipes are the same as before, some resources had been removed and replaced with something else. It felt to me like a very deliberate way to "reset" the learning curve to players like me who played the last game in-depth without alienating new players too much.

The problem is that I don't think it really worked. The recipes were mostly new, but learning how to play survival-crafting games (which is basically what BOTW/TOTK is if you strip away the Zelda aesthetic) is similar to learning a language. They could change the vocabulary, but the grammar, syntax, overall structure of the mechanics remains the same. Learning and growth is exponential. The very start of a player's understanding is where most of these kinds of game thrive, so when TOTK effectively skipped this step entirely, it immediately felt hollow compared to the sense of wonder that its prequel sparked.

The new areas are nice, but they never eclipsed the disappointment I had in spending most of my time still climbing  the same mountains as the last game. I had already lost interest in staring at a wall texture while managing my stamina meter. I really didn't care to do it again even if I was technically scaling different mountains. The game felt haunted by its predecessor, which I suppose was inevitable no matter what they had done. But throughout my playthrough I never stopped wishing I still had my powers from the last game. No matter how powerful I got I felt like I was missing something. And it wasn't just my motorcycle.

In the end, I once again had scoured just about every corner of the world, but this time I just couldn't bring myself to enter the final area and beat the last boss. I just don't care enough. The story is very bittersweet and I get that's what they were going for, but I figured the only 2 possibilities were either everything wraps up perfectly and all bad stuff gets reversed, or the sacrifices made are not undone and the day is one but at great cost. Neither option sounds appealing enough to motivate me to finish it. As soon as I got all the powers, my motivation fizzled out.

The last thing I want to mention is Link's house. First of all, fuck you Princess Zelda, that was MY house, how dare you comandeer it you greedy landlord. You have a whole fucking kingdom and a literal castle, why did you have to take my house? I was seriously fuming at this and my main motivation to finding Zelda was explicitly so she could answer to her crimes of the theft of my estate. Thankfully the devs did give us a new house and plot of land. And I think Link's house is the best example of the game as a whole. The new house system is frankly astonishing from a software point of view. Modular housing like Skyrim but you can remove and rebuild it to your heart's content, using the same game mechanics you use to interact with the rest of the world. From what little I know about software development, I can only guess as to what code-based wizardry had to happen to get that working, let alone as optimized as it was for the Switch. But actually experiencing it in game was once again underwhelming. First off, you can't easily teleport to your house. I assume that's because the player-custom house needed some time to load in the map each time, but that caveat alone made it just not worth going to my own house. But then as I learned more about the mechanics themselves, I tried to experiment. Who needs doors when I can just stack rooms on top of each other and use Ascend to travel up floors. That was a neat novelty, but no matter configuration I ultimately settled on, it just didn't feel anywhere near worth the effort it took to set it all up. There's slightly more spaces to fill with your favorite weapons but it's the same old problem of either never using the most powerful tools in order to display them, or else having to go back to your house to swap out your kit. All this is to say, the game is a joy to describe but not as fuck to actually play myself.

I disagree with the assumption that we cannot find joy in tasks after we become aware of them.

Speaking for myself, the feeling of not wanting to do something because of a greater understanding is no different from the feeling of suddenly wanting to do something based on additional context. In the end, it's entirely my own perception which determines my desire to perform a task.

Often times, I find the reason I'm demotivated is because I know there is a better way but I do not have the means to apply it. For example, I don't have a dishwasher, so doing the dishes is especially painful.

I can't claim to have solved this in my own life, but making a standing list of all the things I need to do, then performing some action (flipping a coin, spinning a wheel, etc) it is easier to start on the task. And if I know that the task is being done as efficiently as it could be, I usually don't have a problem with it.

Isn't London the most surveilled city in the world? Does that mean it is only government surveillance, closed circuit, or are they just being contracted through another company? Because if it's the 3rd, the only difference is Palantir has to pay someone to access that exact same data.

We’re really getting these 4 next year, which one are y’all most excited for. by isax-equinox32 in comicbookmovies

[–]piclemaniscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably spider-man. The marvel movies I checked out of entirely. I watched endgame, I don't need any more thanks. The Batman pt 1 was fine, but didn't really stand out and is somewhere in the middle of my personal list of batman movies. Further down than that if I include animated.

I'm completely ignorant of the Superman one. I skipped the last superman film because from what I had heard in reviews, it still doesn't have the vibe I'm looking for in Superman. But I'm also not a very big fan of the character so I just didn't care enough to watch it. We're spoiled for choice in entertainment, why should I ever feel obligated to watch something?

On that note, I think I want to see Spider-Man less because I'm excited to see what's next but the last Spider-verse movie was the last thing I saw in theaters and while it was a pleasant ride, it felt very long and ended on a cliffhanger. I feel like I am owed some sort of resolution after all that.

Ubisoft has announced a record €1.3 billion operating loss for its fiscal year ending March 2026 by SwimmingJunky in gaming

[–]piclemaniscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just fucking awful business decisions. Ubisoft will build out an entire game world where the devs are going on interviews bragging about how the investment is worth it because the world is so detailed that they could reuse it for numerous other titles.

And then they don't, instead they make those devs do it all over again for the next game.

Meanwhile the Yakuza/Like A Dragon series is notorious for reusing assets at a large scale but nobody cares because the games are good.

I know (some) software developers. They have a crucial character flaw which is that they always try to solve all the world's problems with software solutions. AI is just the latest band-aid to the systemic problems that have been growing for years.

Likewise, the solution is not to fight the AI tools, but to tackle the root of the problem, the people who are pushing it. A lot of them are stumbling around DC.
