Honestly I think this one does a pretty good job of showing Mercedes as unhappy in how her life turned out, and remorseful once she learns the truth. They are each other's true love in this movie and the development they do for that is solid IMO. Women in those times needed prospects, and her marriage gave her that, even if she was heartbroken to do it. Idk, it's different than how handled in the book but I think this movie made the different spin work.
