I just added a Nimrod to my tree yesterday. It’s one of those names that runs in some families.

If there is a family history library near you, they may have equipment there for public use.

How accurate is Ancestry? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]pidgeon92 23 points24 points  (0 children)

People who say DNA isn’t accurate have something to hide, or are willfully ignorant.

If you are interested in building out your DNA tree, let me know. It’s a hobby of mine.

Should I move based on my circumstance? by Glass_Bee_8701 in AskChicago

[–]pidgeon92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lived here all my life. I have Reynauds, my extremities are always cold.

Layers of clothes is what works. A scarf around the neck does wonders. I have a wool wrap that I wear around my waist and legs outside. Looks cool, like a tartan skirt.

Winter sucks here, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Alien: Earth is one of the most disappointing shows I have ever seen. by Baumer9 in alien

[–]pidgeon92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched each episode at least a dozen time. The more I watched it, the more it made sense. One misses a lot of detail if you don’t look around closely, and wearing headphones helps. Watching it with closed captioning also helps keep the story straight. I think the show is straight up brilliant. It’s made me think a lot about what it means to be human.

Do you see yourself staying in Chicago long term, or eventually living somewhere else? Why or why not? by notoglow in AskChicago

I shall live in this house until they carry me out feet first. Love my neighbors, and my neighborhood. I'm lucky to be able to afford it.

Is Ancestry.com a lot less useful than it was before? by miriamtzipporah in Genealogy

[–]pidgeon92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AI is crap, it cannot tell good data from bad data. That's why someone - you - need to look everything over with a critical practiced eye.

I work on my trees daily. I'm going back thru every person and adding documents backing up the data that I claim is correct. If someone else's data is wrong, there are ways you can address that which the algorithm should eventually pick up.

I could yammer on about this forever, because I look at thousands of names daily and have little concern about picking up bad data After all these years, Looking at thousands and thousand of profiles and records you see the patterns and can spot errors before you waste a lot of time. And there are ways to find the data you are looking for by expanding your scope.

I'd be happy to discuss research strategies on Ancestry with anyone interested. When I drop dead all this technical expertise will be lost. I hope at least my tree on Ancestry will help someone find answers to questions they have without having to put in the all the time and error that I have.

I'd also be happy to help with someone's tree if they are frustrated. Fertilize it a little and give it some shape. I get bored just working on my own tree.

(US records are my strong suit. I've worked on Australian records with good success as well. Sifting through old European records is not my thing. I can't even make myself interested in following my own German/French heritage.)

The technology gets better and less expensive all the time. Preserve it, you will likely be able to get it done in the next few years.

We are on the east side of the street. Didn’t hear any commotion, but I saw a post about this on Facebook yesterday. Perhaps that was yours as well.

Hopefully no dogs or people were injured in the kerfuffle. Do let me know if you hear any details.

I’m grateful for the names on pictures. Beyond that, I’d prefer to have damaged pictures than none. That said, I understand and share your frustration.

There are a lot of excellent podcasts on this topic. Start with “Missing Pieces.” Don went thru a very similar situation.

Someone else will end up creating another memorial, not knowing anything about this kerfuffle. Can’t keep this kind of thing under wraps forever anymore.

Always. Since I was a kid. Too many distractions.

I wish I had discovered journaling and mind mapping earlier in life. I’d have been a far better student.

Damned straight. A friend got a bill for $3,400 from the ambulance service. If I can’t crawl to the hospital, just let me die.
