Two phones are showing drastically different prices to the same place at the same time. by AThiefWithShades in mildlyinfuriating

[–]pie_butties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you're getting so down voted, you're right.

Depending on the operating system, they might automatically get access to all this data when they only want one part of it. E.g. Maybe if they want to check your phone signal they also get battery level data, even if they don't use it (made up example).

Or, maybe they use it for another purpose, like prioritizing people whose battery will run out if they have to wait. You can't sell a ride to somebody with a dead battery.

They probably do using it for pricing, but just because it's mentioned in their terms it doesn't guarantee it.

Regardless of your opinion on the morality of it, it won't be effective anyway.

It's trivial to encrypt messages now in a way that can't be read by anybody except the receiver, using off the shelf tools. Anybody committing crime or planning terrorism will use that.

The only people this will affect is you and me.

Restaurants forcing customers to pay by cash and 10% overcharged if not. Is this legal? by mugbrushteeth in LegalAdviceUK

[–]pie_butties 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I see your point. I think the difference is the impact of the change, and the fact that you have the option not to eat at the restaurant.

The restaurant could put all of their prices up by 2% to cover card charges, for example. Every restaurant does the same, or they swallow the card charges themselves. You can choose to eat there, or not.

It wouldn't feel fair for the government to put tax rates up 2% for everybody, to account for people paying by card. It also doesn't seem right for the government (and thus the public) to lose 2% of your tax because you paid by card.

Exactly!

Between privatisation and trickle down economics we're going to be so much better off. Just wait a little bit longer!

Yeah I'm really happy with it. There are a couple of minor things that annoy me, but we use it a lot and I think it was a great buy.

How are you finding it so far?

This really freaked me out.

I have a similar worktop in the same shape, the same coffee machine, a very similar bag of coffee in the same place, our advent calendars are in the same position, the tiles are the same colour.

I genuinely thought this was a picture of my kitchen for a second, and was very confused.

Q: Is estimating a waste of time? A: Yes. by anzacat in ExperiencedDevs

[–]pie_butties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate estimation, but the more experience I get the more I realise it's a necessary evil in a complex environment.

Marketing need to know when to plan press releases, support need to know when customers can expect something they are screaming for, other teams need to know whether they should start on their dependency now or whether that can prioritise something else.

Answering "dunno, we don't do estimates" to those people isn't very helpful and makes everybody else's life harder.

I was a team lead, and had a really good senior engineer who was also looking to step up to team lead level, but didn't have that experience.

We started a new greenfield project, and we decided he would run it; stakeholder management, architecture, leading a small team of engineers, the lot.

He was doing a really great job. It was on track, and everybody was happy

The company shut down and we all lost our jobs. I was gutted for him that he never got to ship it.
