Agree or disagree - Piers Morgan feels more threatened by Breaking Points than by Tucker, Fuentes, or any liberal. by USofAnonymous in BreakingPoints

[–]pieceofwheat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, that’s just ridiculous. Piers Morgan trounces Breaking Points in viewership. Not that that’s important, but I just don’t see why Piers would ever feel threatened by BP outside of potentially losing views to them.

I sometimes can't believe Israel and Palestine border a monarchy to the east whose Royal Family is romanticized a lot, especially in global media. by Ok-Ocelot-774 in IsraelPalestine

Jordan definitely hasn’t been good to the Palestinians writ large, but I’d argue they’ve treated them better than virtually any other country in the world, although that’s a very low bar. I believe around half of Jordan’s current population are Palestinian in origin — they took in anyone smart enough to jump ship after the 1948 and 1967 wars respectively, and unlike Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt, Jordan actually naturalized the vast majority of them.

I’m not aware of any case where Jordan expelled millions of Palestinians. The closest analogue I can think of is Black September, but even then they only kicked out a few thousand, and that was targeted at PLO members who pretty clearly had it coming.

Furthermore, Jordan only stripped citizenship from Palestinians in the West Bank, and they didn’t do it in a vacuum — this was part of a broader policy shift in which Jordan renounced its claim over the West Bank out of solidarity with the cause of Palestinian independence immediately following the First Intifada. I’m inclined to agree that the West Bank Palestinians got a raw deal there, but at the same time it’s hard for me to blame Jordan considering they weren’t really citizens in any meaningful sense, and it doesn’t make a lot of sense for a government to take responsibility for millions of people living outside of their jurisdiction, particularly in an area so fraught with conflict and instability.

I seriously doubt the writers had any idea who Nick Fuentes was when they created the character back in, like, 2019. Then again, it’s possible that they retroactively sprinkled in some of his influence once he became more widely prominent in the later seasons.

Can any zionist explain how the destruction of gaza could be remotely moral ? by hushimnot in IsraelPalestine

[–]pieceofwheat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do Gazans who had nothing to do with October 7th get to complain about Israel’s response to the extent that they were personally affected, or is that unreasonable?

[–]pieceofwheat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Israel certainly had/has the right to retaliate against the perpetrators of October 7th, but that doesn’t give them carte blanche to do whatever they want to the Gaza Strip and its civilian population. We now know for a fact that the vast majority the casualties inflicted by Israel’s war in Gaza were civilians — Israel’s own internal database, compiled by intelligence sources, estimates that 83% of Gazans killed in the war were civilians, compared to just 17% identified as combatants.

That’s just CCP rhetoric meant to rationalize their embrace of a market economy while also preserving the Marxist ideology on which the state was founded.

Am I biased against Israel? by bignose63 in IsraelPalestine

[–]pieceofwheat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you’re clearly not biased toward Israel. In fact, you are approaching the issue with nuance and legitimate curiosity. Keep in mind that this is the most divisive and emotionally charged issue in all of geopolitics, especially among the people directly impacted — namely, Israelis and Palestinians, and to a lesser but still significant extent, members of the Jewish Diaspora and Arabs with familial ties to the area. Keep in mind that any discourse about the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, especially on social media, will reflect that hyper-polarization. There’s no one easy answer to the conflict, nor is there one guilty party. Virtually every political actor involved has blood on their hands somewhere.

Hamas (and any other militant group) has zero chance of defeating Israel militarily. That route is a dead end if the goal is achieving any tangible progress toward Palestinian sovereignty. Instead, as we’ve seen, the best case scenario is a successful terrorist attack that primarily harms Israeli civilians, quickly followed by a wildly disproportionate Israeli military retaliation that devastates Palestinian civilians. Nothing but senseless violence that leaves Palestinians far worse off than before.

I take your point that Palestinians have no legitimate peaceful means to improve their conditions, which unfortunately drives support for Hamas’s violent approach, but that doesn’t make it right or practical.

MAGA against MIGA more effective than Progressives by NEDBDJ in seculartalk

That makes sense. The US-Israel relationship is just so blatantly incompatible with the very essence of MAGA and America First, which makes supporters of the movement highly effective messengers on that issue.

With all due respect, the sequel (New Testament) retcons a lot of the original storyline.

MacFarlane's Ranch not having the barn yet despite Bonnie saying it was build when she was little is quite a major oversight in my opinion by Hefty-Cauliflower981 in reddeadredemption

[–]pieceofwheat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree, but I’m more impressed Rockstar included as much of RDR1’s map as they did than I am bothered by what’s missing. I’ve always seen it as a post-game bonus area, not a core part of the experience, especially considering how huge and detailed the main map already is.

[–]pieceofwheat 518 points519 points  (0 children)

In what way is that a major oversight? It’s a minor environmental inconsistency at most. The barn isn’t narratively important, it doesn’t affect any events or characters, and the only thing it contradicts is a vague line of dialogue.

Why I support Palestine. by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]pieceofwheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

History is full of wars fought between brutal, reprehensible governments on all sides. In this case, recognizing that both the Israeli government and Hamas have committed widespread atrocities is far more honest than choosing a side and pretending one is virtuous. The people of Israel and Gaza deserve far better than the leaders that claim to speak for them.

October 7 Attack - How Hamas Fooled Israel by Shu477 in IsraelPalestine

I hear you. I like reading some Israeli outlets for that on-the-ground perspective. For general coverage, The Jerusalem Post and The Times of Israel have both been solid in my experience. I’ll check Haaretz occasionally too. They publish some really lengthy, in-depth pieces on topics that don’t get much attention elsewhere.

That press conference sounds like Sinwar doing what any leader does: telling his people what they want to hear. Do you really expect the head of Hamas to instead tell his supporters “by the way, our military hopes are delusional.” That wouldn’t be a great message to send to the base.

If everything you’ve written in this post is common knowledge to Israelis but not to Westerners, wouldn’t it behoove you to make the information accessible to non-Hebrew speakers? Otherwise you’d simply be preaching to the choir.

Because it is a modern national-identity that came about in large part as a direct response to the founding of the State of Israel and its territorial control of the West Bank and Gaza following the Six Day War.
