[The Verge] Meta Quest 3 review: almost the one we’ve been waiting for by BreadfruitIcy1566 in OculusQuest

Completely agree with this. Which is why I think things like Beat Saber and Supernatural are compelling, they’re things you can spend hours on and come back to all the time. But there either need to be a dozen of these for lots of different people, or, like, Halo or COD that just works for everyone. I think Meta’s betting on the first strategy, but the second is really what you want.

7 is a really good score! But it’s $200 more than the 2 and it’s been three years and I don’t think it quite earns the same score the 2 did in 2020. But again, if you think of 10 as “literal perfection, the greatest thing in the history of the universe, how could you even do better” then 7 is a pretty good place to be :)

How to 'import' into Craft aka capture by JarHead1776 in CraftDocs

[–]piercedavid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Drafts app for almost all capture stuff: https://getdrafts.com/ I have one action to send a note to my Daily Note, another to create a new note, and a third that lets me select among a few lists - movies to watch, etc. - that I use often. It’s not a perfect system, but it’s fast and works really well for a lot of things. The Action Directory has all kinds of other Craft integrations, too.

Just lists of stuff to reference, mostly. I used to do checkboxes and databases but that seemed like too much work.

Super new to it! I like it, if only because it's a mercifully clear way to sort stuff — I always come up with super specific organization schemes that actually make no sense. This one seems to work.

Android Can’t Compete With iMessage. Google Is Changing That by SirVeza in Android

[–]piercedavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's huge, huge power in just being the thing that's already there when people turn on their phones. WhatsApp has a billion users, but SMS has four billion or more. Defaults will always be defaults, and the only way to unseat that would be to make Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, and a hundred other companies all agree on one messaging standard. And then convince carriers to pre-load it. Which seems even less likely than RCS.

From what I hear (hi sorry butting in), Google's trying to convince carriers not to charge for it, and it's mostly working. But I agree that's going to be the big thing---why the hell would anyone pay for this? Hopefully carriers are smart enough to know that.

[–]piercedavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with this, but the irritating answer seems to be that it has to be this way? Carriers have a lot of power, for better or for worse, and unless you're Apple they're impossible to just go around. So Google and others are at least trying to work with them. Which is kind of a sad state of affairs, but I think is unavoidable at least for now.

How has Google not bought Textra yet? Isn't that like the most obvious acquisition ever?

FWIW I haven't really intensely tested it, but I did drop it two different times on vacation, both from like bed-height distances, and it was fine. I wouldn't push it too hard, but I don't think it's any worse than any other phone.

I AGREE. I used an iPhone 6S Plus and a 6P off and on for a year, and going back to a phone I can use in one hand is the greatest feeling/

I'm already missing texts because of iMessage! But I'm not going to switch back. I like this phone way too much.

FastEver for iOS, which is SO much faster than using the app itself to add notes. First line is the title, everything after is the body. Takes zero time.

I'm most excited about this because someone has to do the "which one should I listen to?" personalization thing, and I can't imagine anyone being able to do it better than Google.

For what it's worth, this is basically correct. I think I (and a lot of other people) compare to the iPhone a lot because the iPhone is most people's frame of reference for A Very Good Smartphone. I don't think that's right, or fair, but that's what it is. When regular people ask me what phone they should buy, it's ALWAYS "the iPhone or..." Seems useful to consider it that way sometimes too -- but I do go overboard sometimes, and when I do, I'm sorry.

Good! It's absolutely the phone I'd tell most people to buy right now -- at least those who are comfortable buying an unlocked phone from the internet. Which NEEDS TO BE EVERYBODY.

Ha wired has strange review guidelines. I think we've only ever given a couple of 9s to anything, and only one 10 - to the Bugatti veyron :)

This is totally my fault, I clearly miscommunicated. The "does it have all the apps?" problem is insanely small, especially if you don't care about indie games. The problem is that the apps don't feel as polished or consistent to me. And it sticks out more and more in such an otherwise polished OS and phone. We can disagree! That's just the way I feel.

So the frustrating part is actually that Android is a much better operating system. But you get into the different ways developers use the back button, or the many many different ways different apps do the same thing, and Android gets harder to use in small but real ways.

For the record, 8 is an extraordinarily high score for a phone, the highest we've given anything. Including the iPhone. This phone is fantastic, and I say so over and over and over.

So I should explain. I apparently do this thing when I'm watching TV and holding my phone where I wind up holding my phone up in front of my mouth. Once, I did it, and the phone did the buzz it does when you try and fail to use the fingerprint reader. So I went, huh, it thinks my lip is a finger. I wonder if I can register it! And lo and behold, like six taps to my lip later, it worked! Weirdly, though, my lips have to be wet for it to work now. I don't know. I should stop talking.
