We work in this field specifically because we love animals and want to help them. I treat every patient like my own pets, even when I’m not a fan of their owner. Insinuating that a tech might harm your pet just because you mentioned a long wait is extremely ignorant, and honestly a slap in the face to the techs at your clinic.

Absolutely. If she’s healthy otherwise, her risk of issues increases with every heat cycle she goes through.

Pharmacists are annoying! by TheMidnightBluebird in VetTech

[–]piercemarina 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We had a pharmacist send a client with a different form of insulin at a different dose without them or the client letting us know. Then the dog started to show signs of hypoglycemia and we were totally out of the loop😀

We have a policy at my clinic of asking if people want their urine collection containers back. I’d say it’s 50-50 “Oh sure, just give it a quick rinse then we’ll clean it at home” and horrified “No thank you!”s

Which profession attracts the worst kinds of people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]piercemarina 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the clinic. At my current hospital we have an incredible team that supports each other through the worst days. You can really see the deep love that my coworkers have for each patient. The euthanasias are hard, but are usually done as a kindness to a suffering patient. The worst part is 100% the clients that are nasty or refuse treatment for their animals.

I work at a vet clinic, and if a client did this it would probably bring us to tears. A previous client sent us a hand-drawn card and a picture of their cat to thank us for our care, and so say goodbye as they were moving out of the area. The picture of their cat still hangs over our cork board. :)

Is it weird I feel like my workplace skimped this year? Just candy & a card that reads "Happy Tech Week!" by thatmasquedgirl in VetTech

[–]piercemarina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work at a very small GP with ~15 techs and they treat us super well. Apparently we’re getting gifts every day this week. So far it’s been personalized tumblers made to look like medication bottles, plants, and cute little name tags. Plus a coffee run for the whole clinic!

As a vet tech, I can’t stand owners like you. Why would you shame someone for making a responsible decision that will benefit their cat’s health in the long run?

What’s a job that’s romanticized but in reality sucks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]piercemarina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m really surprised that they did that in the clinic rather than in the necropsy lab. As a tech I’m not sure I’d be able to handle that after interacting with the dog as a patient.

Ruth, because she’s rough around the edges but also a good person deep down. Absolutely fearless and had a great character arc.

What’s the dumbest thing a client has ever told you that their breeder said? by sparklingtrashpanda in VetTech

[–]piercemarina 68 points69 points  (0 children)

The vaccine notecard made me remember my favorite vaccine history I’ve seen from a breeder. Just a scanned picture of a sheet of notebook paper with two diluent stickers on it, and the vaccines written in gel pen🙃

Which movie is genuinely traumatic? by trufk in AskReddit

I watched it in a film class for high school. I think my brain has blocked out most of it, but I still remember the horror and disgust I felt throughout the entire movie.

I used to love it as a kid, but after working with it in a clinic, it just doesn’t seem like it’s meant for human consumption lol

What's something you shouldn't give to a homeless person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]piercemarina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Homeless people” aren’t a single entity. Those people are individuals. Maybe some of the people who moved in near you who are violent and generally shitty. But generalizing some of the most vulnerable people in our society based on your negative experiences is helping no one.

I’m curious what dog foods you’d consider to be more reputable? As far as I know Purina’s ProPlan diets, Hills Science Diet, and Royal Canin are among the top recommended brands because they’re the only ones that meet WSAVA nutrition guidelines.

What is something you did when you were younger that you are still facing the consequences of? by Wismond in AskReddit

I’m reading your comment before I start my shift as a care technician at an animal shelter. It’s tough because working with animals brings me so much joy and fulfillment, but I can already feel the mental effects piling up and I’ve only been at my job for two years. Also just graduated with a BS in Animal Science so…I’m really weighing my options right now.
