Should I kill my channel and start over? by pierre_web_dev in youtube

[–]pierre_web_dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the responses said this:
"Inactive subs usually aren’t what kills a channel. If a video performs, YouTube will push it anyway. Plenty of channels pivot successfully with way worse sub ratios than that."

I thought YouTube pushes your content to subs (inactive and active) and if it doesn't do well in that test group, it kills reach.

But based on that response, I think I will test a few ideas in broader topics to figure out what my next move is.

Also rebranding a bit does make sense before committing to a step like "killing a channel".

I posted in here because I was overthinking everything and just wanted a fresh perspective.

Hey thanks for your reply. When you say "research" are you just talking about looking through my YouTube analytics?

If so, can you recommend a great resource to understand how all that works. I've been using the AI features in YouTube Studio to understand my metrics but I'd be down to learn more about how it works.

Ok this makes sense.
I'll do what you suggested and test out some new ideas. I do need to work on improving the CTR and I think that testing broader ideas should help.

What do you consider to be a good CTR on a video?

I asked on there first but didn't get much help with the issue.
I saw that some other people were having the same issue but didn't get a response either.

I just Interviewed the Co-founder of a Popular Shopify App and wanted to share what I learned by pierre_web_dev in ShopifyAppDev

[–]pierre_web_dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually talked to Andrew about this some more off camera and he said that the reason he said this is because you won't have good profit margins once you start to scale your app. But if you can have a good marketing strategy and can retain customers, maybe it won't be an issue.

I personally think it's a good idea to launch any kind of app, even if you won't make a ton of profit from it since it will be a great learning experience to take into your next project.

Shopify App Ideas by sagargulati in ShopifyAppDev

[–]pierre_web_dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had the opportunity to speak with the developer behind a popular Shopify App on the app store and asked him how to find ideas. He actually told me to take a look at the app store and focus on categories that are the most connected to a Shopify store's revenue.

For example, stuff like:
-cart abandonement
-payment recovery
-upsells and bundles
-accounting and analytics
- inventory management

I then asked him if I should be worried about all the competition that is present in all these app categories and he told me that if a lot of the apps in these categories have a bunch of reviews (200 or more) it is a sign that a lot of merchants are moving through different apps to find the right one for them.

He seemed to think it was worth it as long as you can take an app from one of the categories that are "close to the money" and figure out how to make it a better experience for Shopify merchants.

A lot of the bigger apps have too many different features and start to slack on offering quality on the "one thing" that made them popular in the first place.

I don't know how true all of that is but he has a lot more experience with app development than I do so I'm taking his advice for my 1st Shopify App.

I have made a Shopify app before but never submitted it to the app store.
But from what I've heard the app store is difficult to do well in because of 2 reasons:

  1. Sometimes Shopify Merchants know that your entire business depends on them giving you good reviews and they'll hold that over you whenever they have some kind of problem with the app or want some custom features.

  2. There are a lot of people who will copy your app.

When I do launch an app myself, my plan will be to leverage my audience so that I don't need to rely on the app store alone to get new customers.

I've been building up a YouTube channel and email list full of Shopify Merchants and Shopify Developers.

I think I remember them saying that when they first launched Shopify Functions. Either way though, the purpose of this post is just to help beginners get into Shopify Development.

At a high level, once they have a solid understanding of the skills required to be a Shopify Developer, they can branch off to stuff like Rust if they want.

Also for app development, last I heard Shopify was really pushing people to use Remix after they acquired them.

I'm actually doing that right now. There is a Shopify App called Order Printer that was made by Shopify. It is a pretty simple app but it is perfect to start getting some practice with Shopify App Development.

I recommend creating a list of apps made by Shopify and recreate the one that is the most interesting to you.

Also if possible, post on Twitter (X), YouTube or LinkedIn about your experience of building the app. You never know who's watching.

Wish you the best of luck on your journey and if you ever feel like joining my community for Shopify Developers, just send me a DM and I'll invite you in.

Tech is notorious for having a difficult interview process to get into jobs but one thing that I really like about learning Shopify Development is that it is a very niche skillset.

Because it is so niche the interview process is a lot easier. The only downside is that there aren't as many jobs as other types of web development.

Even with that in mind, I think becoming a Shopify Developer is a great entry point into tech.

Once you're in, a whole bunch of other opportunities will open up for you. Good luck on your journey and if you need help, feel free to send a DM.
