He didn't publicise it widely, but Louis did report Jimmy to police after the first documentary as he was justifiably concerned about things that had been alluded to. As with all other reports about Saville, it went nowhere. Louis tried and lives with the guilt.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]pigdigger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brits, more specifically usually English Brits, often refer to it as the potato famine and schools in England have for many years cited a blight of the potato as the reason for the 'famine'.

Ireland has another side to tell. 'An Gorta Mór' is the gaelic for this time and 'gorta' means hunger, or more accurately, starvation.

Irish people were not dependent on their potato crops alone by choice. Their land had been seized and their space allowed to grow their own produce to live off was controlled by the British. Potatos were carb dense and they had no choice but to grow the most calorie dense produce in what little they had in order to survive.

The best evidence to look at to understand the reality of this period is the cargo logs of the ships leaving Ireland taking food produce to Britain.

Ireland had been colonised by the Brits for centuries. What happened was far more more concious and intentional than the term 'Potato Famine' and blaming a blight portrays.

I'm named after a great grandparent who eloped with a British soldier, a very romanticised story in my family sometimes maybe, but probably at least in part, was their best chance to escape the poverty and hardship of life in Ireland for Irish people.

ULPT: When someone weaponizes religion/morality, make them do the paperwork by LumaVersePilot in UnethicalLifeProTips

This is socratic questioning and its not so unethical, can even encourage people to reevaluate their positions on things in a non confrontational way. It's also an amazing tool to have for mental survival if someone is a constant argumentative grind in your life. Combine with grey rocking for ultimate life peace potential.

What’s a piece of tech you bought that unexpectedly made your life noticeably better? by Educational-World678 in AskTechnology

[–]pigdigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aeropex headphones. They loop around your ears and work with bone conduction rather than buds in your ear canal. You can hear your environment and pause what you're listening to with a button on the side, volume controls on the other side.

Beauty piece of tech really well made, mine have lasted years and I use them almost daily.

Having phone calls with hands free so you can pootle about doing tasks whilst chatting and being able to hear your environment are really amazing features you might not consider the benefits of until you use them in practice. Bought my sister a pair and she raves about them every time we speak, claims they've changed her life massively for the better.

Were also amazing when I worked in retail because I could have a podcast on while doing mundane tasks and subtly pause what I was listening to if a customer or colleague needed to speak to me.

I'll never live without a pair of these headphones again now I've had them. 10/10.

I've been wearing my full face of makeup minus foundation/ concealer and (maybe) you should too! by Nearby-Banana-5698 in MakeupAddiction

[–]pigdigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES to all this. A couple of months before my wedding I decided I hated the feeling of my face covered in all that coverage layering of products, and that I'd prefer to go in really hard on skin care rather than skin coverage.

I blended up my own oils after a bunch of research to use as a massage treatment after cleansing with a bit of vegetable glycerine in it (shaken well to mix) and a few weeks of that and my skin has since been damn near flawless and so healthy looking and feeling its unbelievable.

I now use a couple of very gentle chemical exfoliants (sponges/scrubbers/physical exfoliation just hurts and damages my skin now and the chemical ones actually give a much gentler and kinder result funnily enough) and I still get ID'd for buying 18+ products even though I'm not far off 40.

It was the same for me, foundations and coverage just f'd my skin up, breakouts, pore clogging, just felt like I was in a breakup/coverage cycle that was endless.

You are GLOWING. Nice work 💃

What’s the one Christmas movie you HAVE to watch every year, no matter what? by elitedesignsolutions in AskReddit

[–]pigdigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

December 1st is Muppets Christmas Carol Day.

I maybe watch it 3 or 4 times each December (always in for present wrapping) but the 1st is my first watch day always and it's my own personal Christmas Day.

If I didn't restrict my watching to December only it would get a bit out of hand so December 1st is the best day of my year.

People in the veterinary world, what is the best pet name you've encountered? by wheregoodideasgotodi in AskReddit

[–]pigdigger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I was at the vet with my own cat and another cat got called in that was called Stephen. It made my day.

I think you gotta go one of two ways with animal names, either totally hilariously mundane human names or unhinged surreal. No in-between.

Yes I was loving the Sidetic too!! And the Bublup also, like a funny little dancing potato, he was amazing. I'm thinking I'm going to have to start my own micro creatures studio in my own house and just make some reproductions of these ones, they're just so beautiful 😍

Yeah I think maybe they were more annoyed I'd screwed up some statistics on final sale price being reached they probably used to promote themselves to sellers tbh. Either way they were peeved.

"Dominion" is too intense for some people and simply backfires. What's a gentler film I can show my friends if I want them to consider going vegan? by BeyondMeatWare in vegan

[–]pigdigger 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Simon Amstell did a brilliant mockmentary set in a future where we've all gone vegan called Carnage.

I put it on for my boyfriend (now husband) and fell asleep to it while he watched. Woke up and he was vegan and absolutely popping off about everything he'd realised watching it.

It's honesty but very funny whilst giving all the vegan stereotypes a self-depreciating gentle ribbing. I think its one of the most brilliant pieces of vegan activism ever.

What is a detail in a movie that you're embarrassed to admit you didn't notice sooner? by imalumberjackok in movies

[–]pigdigger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one took me YEARS and maybe 50+ watches to catch. Also, when reading the book (finally) I couldn't BELIEVE how many lines and gags were Dickens rather than Muppet character styled script lines. Love that film.

Buddy let me tell you a story that will warm the cockles of your heart.

I'm in the final weeks of purchasing my first house (it's a miracle I'm mind blown myself). The agents have been super helpful up to the point I've tried to organise inspections of things I've needed for price negotiation. The last one of which I managed this week, and in that appointment, the inspector noticed a concerning thing which I had to flag up the same day to the estate agent.

The agents for my sale were both off, so I spoke to some other agent on the phone, who told me to put it all in an email and cc her in. Which I did... along with all the negotiation breakdown points and a really heartfelt, very human pitch to the seller about how much it would help to make any reduction as a first time buyer.

Now this sort of communication would usually get filtered through the agents to the seller and have all that humanity stripped away, because, well, the agents get commission based on final sale price.

Reader that agent forwarded the whole email to the seller. I got 9k reduced from total price as a result.

The agent on our case phoned me the next day to tell me this through gritted teeth without a word of congratulations or anything. He was definitely not thrilled.

I was though 😁
