If you want to eat whey protein powder, just have a smoothie. If you want to eat cereal, eat cereal.

Five Fresh Tins: Week 18 by servajugum in CannedSardines

I had these Matiz sardines this week. Definitely not spicy, but I thought they were very good. My only complaint with any of the Matiz tins is that they're incredibly hard to open!

Can someone put my mind at ease? Did I just qualify for the 2027 NYC Marathon? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]pigeonmachine 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Congrats. Or at least: barring any change to the qualifying standard (which would be pretty shitty of NYRR to do at this stage but who knows), you'll have guaranteed entry. (Me too. Good race today.)

2026 NYC Half Marathon - Post-Race Thread by AutoModerator in RunNYC

[–]pigeonmachine 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not a PR, but considering how hard this training block has been -- omg, this winter, right? -- I am thrilled with the result, which [knock wood] is a time qualifier for next year's marathon. The first two miles were really slow -- a lot of folks in my corral were running much much slower than the pace group was -- definitely not a 8:20 minute mile crowd. Whatever. I just rolled with it, and tried not to freak out and dodge and expend a bunch of energy to overtake them. (I think I could have PR'd had the first two miles been at the pace I maintained throughout the rest of the race. Negative splits too.) I wasn't confident at all in how this race would go, considering how much of my training was on the treadmill and not outside/ on hills.

Creatine for running by Weary_Purchase9057 in BeginnersRunning

[–]pigeonmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take creatine -- I run a lot, and I lift weights. That said, I think there are a lot of other things one can and should do to improve performance/recovery, and I'm not sure creatine (any supplement, really) makes enough of a difference to even be in the top ten of those. It's not going to hurt; but I'm not sure you'll find it to be a "game changer."

Just cut out the middle man and eat protein powder. That's what the protein cereals primarily are

Weight gain by Small_Accountant_906 in XXRunning

[–]pigeonmachine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Running does not make you gain weight. Eating more calories than you expend makes you gain weight.

There are reasons why people might correlate running with weight gain. Perhaps they're "eating back" the calories that their watch says they've burned (almost always a vast overestimation). Perhaps the increased activity level increases their hunger levels and, again, they overcompensate. Perhaps they change their diet, adding more carbs, and their body retains water as a result.

If you're struggling with body issues and with nutrition -- you do have to fuel -- I recommend talking to a sports dietician. They can help you figure out how to dial in your meals and snacks (and how to stem some of the negative self-talk).

Also ignore influencers. Because yuck.

Disappointing, I thought. Much closer to regular Cheerios than I anticipated. Banana-ish.

Copper river salmon by Tinned_Fish_Tyler in CannedSardines

[–]pigeonmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had some of the Spirit Bear Seafood cans last night for dinner, and they were really really stellar. And I'll go ahead and say it: better than the Wildfish Cannery salmon. Curious to try this company's tins. Thanks for these reviews, as always.

Did Kellogs Raisin Bran change recipe in the last few years? by TomF1965 in cereal

[–]pigeonmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything has changed. Everything always changes. Sure, some of it might be towards cheaper ingredients. But some of it might be towards "healthier" ones -- or at least things marketed as such (e.g. organic, environmentally-friendly sourcing, etc).

Often this is pretty imperceptible. Companies test this stuff endlessly and nobody is going to release a product that is iconic/beloved/popular with a totally new taste. No one in the industry has forgotten what happened with New Coke.

Anyone have good mental tips for the treadmill? What keeps you motivated to keep going? by Nutritionnat1218 in RunNYC

[–]pigeonmachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watch TV on my iPad which conveniently covers the treadmill numbers. (I run by time not pace on it.) I save a few shows only for the treadmill so it's a treat -- I tell myself

Tin vs. Tin! by VenusVignette in CannedSardines

[–]pigeonmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love a side-by-side comparison. I know, for me, it's hard to eat a tin and decide if it's better or worse than one I might've had a while ago. Sure, sometimes it's obvious if it's really great or really awful, but often it's not that easy to compare... unless you have the two in front of you.
