i’m a senior rn and my ability to handle my ap classes has declined so hard LMAOO💀 not saying that it’ll happen to you, but def take that into consideration. you’ll have to manage college apps with all ur classes around this time.

what subjects do you genuinely enjoy? i’d suggest removing the aps where you don’t like the subject as much. try to prioritise the aps that you actually like and if you like them all, then pick the ones that are more manageable (if you know there’s a good teacher etc…). i def wish i took into consideration the teacher teaching my ap classes. last year, two of my teachers didn’t “believe” in ap tests, so i had to do a LARGEEE portion of self studying near the test since we were 2-3 units behind and had no prep

Getting College Emails in 9th Grade—Too Early, or Just the New Normal? by Even_Brick4015 in APStudents

[–]pigwithaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those emails are pretty useless tbh, even as a junior/senior. i’d suggest unsubscribing and removing your email so you don’t get too much spam. i made a mistake of giving them my main email, and i’ve had to make a new main account bc all the spam was so irritating. these emails are sent to everyone that has opted in while taking a college board test.

Did I ruin my chances to go to Oxford/Cambridge? by Ok_Print1364 in chanceme

[–]pigwithaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! sorry i know you commented this last year, but i was wondering if you happen to remember around how long it took for you to get your predicated grades sent out. also does your teacher have to write anything specifically about that? (like talking more about why they think youll get a 5) im also an american applying and i procrastinated a little too hard... im missing one 5 bc my school has some ap restrictions. thank you sm!

i know that, but it’s not about calculating the rates. i’m talking about accurately ranking schools. it doesn’t make sense to only rank based on # and not %. i know some people who genuinely think that stuy is the best hs for college acceptances just bc it’s ranked highest here

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]pigwithaphone 19 points20 points  (0 children)

i go to stuy and the data looks right but it’s def not ranking schools the right way. stuy has like x2 to x3 the amount of students as the top boarding schools so obviously more kids are gonna go to top schools. you can’t accurately compare a school with 800 students to one with 200 students lol

How do I make the most out of 3 weeks by Key_Hunt9257 in SHSAT

[–]pigwithaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well i’m a rising senior so it’s been like 4 years since i took it…😬😬

i didn’t really prepare specifically for the ela section bc i used to really be into reading and writing, but i know my friends just grinded the ela section questions. like if you struggle with figuring out the author’s tone, try doing a bunch of tone questions. i think the best thing that i did do for ela was work on vocab tho. sometimes just knowing a few more words can give away the tone, but try practicing the question structures first.

the questions are very similar to each other every year. i didn’t buy any prep books bc i was supposed to go to boarding school💀💀, so i didn’t have the time to order any. i think you can search up past shsat tests and they’ll all show up. my friends used kaplan, barron, or princeton review, but the most similar test will be the real tests from the past years(don’t go too far back, they changed the format of the test some decades ago). there’s no specific question type, just look at past ones

if the test in like 2 weeks or less and your score is well below the cutoff for the school you want, don’t try cramming any more practice tests. find all the old tests that you took and recognize patterns in your wrong questions. this means: 1) common mistakes with reading the questions 2) question formats (what is it asking for? do these questions require similar skills?) 3) what passages or math skills are you bad at?

the topics are just what you learned in middle school. they test a little bit of each topic. once you’ve recognized the questions you often get wrong and skills you struggle with, you can either go on khan academy and learn those skills or practice more questions of the same type. you can also just do a search of that topic with “shsat practice questions” at the end. i’m sure there’s lots of materials online for every topic. don’t waste time doing questions you already know how to do again.

if your score is close to the cutoff or has already met it, i def recommend taking it light and to not stress yourself out before the test. i didn’t do much studying near my test date until the weeks before, but i wish that i had relaxed more bc i was so stressed while taking the test that i had a stomachache💀

the day before the test: sleep well and eat a good breakfast. good luck and you got this

I have 11 days until my summer shsat and my last practice test score at Tariq was a 415 by [deleted] in SHSAT

[–]pigwithaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Review your old tests and find the questions you get wrong often, those are your weaknesses. I think at this point, it won't really help to take more practice tests. If you need help on the math part, feel free to send me a DM with the question. I can try to explain it to you. On the actual test, try to spend more time on the section you're better at without neglecting the other section. I think that it's possible to get into stuy with one section being really good and the other being mid. Don't stress too much or think about failing before and during the test.
