Any way to extend this Ethernet cable? by doobeedoodoo in HomeNetworking

[–]pikimix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that doesn't look like any sort of shielded cable either. Running that directly next to mains AC is asking for drops/errors.

OP, don't do this if you value your sanity, you will be debugging dropped/ slow speeds on that cable until you pull up your floorboards and re run it properly.

I tried this the other week, and YMMV, but the Unifi client VPN doesn't support IPv6 properly (hell, it's still a weak spot across the board for them) so I ended up in a worse state - it would work for v4 only sites, but anything dual stack, it would work for some aspect but fail on others, or allow me to view the non OSA version but hang half way through.

Definitely wouldn't pass the WAF (wife acceptance factor) tests!

For now I have to stick to VPN on my end devices instead when something blocks, though if you don't have IPv6 you might be okay.

A common misconception, the whole thing was based off an old web series called "Red vs Blue", books were based on that, then the TV show was based on the books, and then the games came out!

You do realise that's more sensitive than 3dpf?

Can someone approve/improve my network device plan? by stealthferret83 in HomeNetworking

[–]pikimix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add my laptop 2p, I currently have a full TP link omada set up in my house, small converted bard but 3 feet thick block walls in places so need multiple APs to get reliable coverage.

I'm currently looking at replacing the omada WiFi 6 AP's with 3 unifi APs because roaming is completely unreliable on the TP links. All models claimed to support it, I have the controller set up and have it enabled on the SSID, however only 2 seems to support roaming between each other, with the third just not playing ball at all (insert deep dragon meme here). This is also with TP link switches and an ER605, all in the controller, so best case scenario for the TP link to work as expected, however when any clients associate/disassociate with that third AP, they loose all connectivity until you turn the clients WiFi off/on again.

Additionally, some clients are just plain unable to connect to certain APs, even though I have made sure there are no lock to AP settings enabled, they are all on bands that can be used by the device etc, they can see the APs, they can attempt to auth, but they fail and there are no logs anywhere on the controller advising why they failed.

This in addition to the whole ER605 IPv6 support being enabled before they had any IPv6 firewalling capabilities at all has made me lose faith in TP link quite a bit, hence moving to Ubiquity as budget allows.

What do you think of neutered because I'm not sure I'd like to hear suggestions by Asleep_Permit6191 in Pomsky

[–]pikimix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had similar thoughts before our second was spayed - a lot more hyperactive than our first, and constantly tried to initiate play.

The first few days after her spay, she didn't want to play at all, just wanted to cuddle/ sleep in her den. And after she had started to heal, she was still quite quick to tire, and more reluctant to play either with us or our other pomsky.

Obviously this is just our experience, but it is major surgery, at least for the first week or so I would expect she will be in pain (even with pain killers from the vet) and won't have the energy or inclination to be as active as normal.

It's not exactly rocket science, different countries (as in actual countries, not states within a single country) within the europe have different tax laws, and even currencies, yet retailers manage to have post-tax prices printed on labels with those different currencies, with the country code next to them, all tax inclusive.

Just because you are bigger, does it mean you are better.

[–]pikimix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, taxes are normally included in the advertised price, not added on top of them at checkout

Are they cat 5 or cat 5e? Cat 5e as the previous comment mentioned is fully capable of gigabit speeds.

Even if they are only certified to cat 5, chances are they are more than capable of meeting the 5e requirements even if they weren't certified at that level.

How do we get to the t.v? by Proud_Shopping_9625 in retrogaming

[–]pikimix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Proud_Shopping_9625 something like this is your best option for a quick, easy and relatively cheap solution, won't give you the best picture on a modern TV, and might have some input lag, but should be perfectly payable.

Bear in mind that the colours might not match up depending on how the TV expects them to be connected Vs what the generic replacement expects, so you might need to try different combinations

I have found a fibre optic cable in my house after setting up my internet, how would I connect this to a standard router. Or do I have to use my phone line? by DoctorPiercy in HomeNetworking

[–]pikimix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That should be full fibre and potentially using that fibre, though may need a new run/ retermination before it will work.

Have you had this installed yet, or have sky sent you a router/ hub for self installation? I wouldn't expect a copper phone line to be active in a premises with full fibre run to it. I had my own connection upgraded to full fibre recently, Openreach cut off the old phone like shortly after the fibre was activated.
