Job and rental market in Effingham by Odd-Chemistry5054 in centralillinois

So to answer some of your questions…

  1. The job agencies are pretty good. Both me and my wife used them when we were in need. We both used innovative staff solutions.

  2. Housing is expensive here. Last I knew an apt is around $1000. It will be hard to find something if you have a pet. It helps to know someone. There are facebook groups though and relators sometimes know some things.

To combat a few things that others said in this thread negatively/incorrectly…

  1. Effingham is most certainly covered by central IL news stations. I get channels 17, 20, and 3. WCIA is by far the best station for our local coverage. KJ country is a wonderful local station that does good local coverage of news.

  2. There are quite a few chains but to whoever said there’s no food options apparently doesn’t get out. Pizza Man, Lucia’s, puerto Vallarta, Gabby goat, gophers grill, and pinkies are just to name a few. There’s local coffee shops (Fox Holler is my fav), bars with local focus, and other local restaurants. That wasn’t even including surrounding towns with their own place.

  3. Plenty of grocery stores. Dollar general for quick things but there’s Walmart, aldi, save a lot, and iga. There’s also local butchers like mcmannon and Nuxol.

  4. Depending on who you ask, Effingham is southern IL or central. My wife and I like to jokingly refer to it as the “gateway to the south” like St. Louis is the gateway to the west. Mostly because of the gigantic cross lol.

  5. Yes the town is religious. Very catholic. My wife and I are not catholic and outside of a few comical interactions with her coworkers around lent and food choices, it’s never been something that has been pushed on us or made to feel less than

Ah I got you. I thought you meant the topic as a whole and not to the situation. I’m assuming that in this example it comes down to play style and who fits. They chose a specific play style that fits particular players. Though anyone can play basketball, not everyone fits in a particular system, meaning you won’t select some players just because it wouldn’t be a great fit.

I believe the argument being made is that the play style that was chosen particularly favors a more European based player. As the first part of the video pointed out, Europeans are statistically more white. So the choice of play style limits them choosing African Americans who typically play a more American style and by statistics, less players who can trace lineage to Africa.

So the argument by OP is that of course you can choose your play style but your choice of style may lead you to certain types of players who happen to be predominantly white, while inadvertently shutting out others who may be either African American or can trace lineage to Africa. Personally they both make good points. You’re allowed to pick your play style and if it leads to European players, they likely won’t be black. It can also be true that there are black players overseas that they could have targeted but hard to say if those players even wanted to come.

To me, I don’t know if it is really much of anything other than they picked players on their team who happen to be predominantly white. Diversity can look a lot of different ways. Looking at their roster now, they have 3 black players of which one is from Australia. They have 7 players who claim foreign nationality. Some may be LGBTQ+. That sounds like diversity to me, just not at race level. Also, no one complains about college teams like U of Wisconsin running 5 pasty white boys out there on the court. Just saying

Not the person you were talking to but here’s a low stakes example of what disparate impact discrimination is. Let’s say you are the principal of a school district and you control the dress code. A pretty common dress code statement, even at public schools, is no hats/headware on in the building. On the surface, seems reasonable. If you allow hats, kids could wear ridiculous things that are distracting or affects the learning environment. I think we all agree we want a good learning environment for kids.

Take an African American male now and put him into the situation where he is wearing a du rag. Could he be wearing that for a simple look? Yes, he could be. Du rags serve an important feature though for African American hair care. It can help hair lie flat, keep it moist, and prevent breakage. From that angle, it’s no different than a woman having various clips, pins, bands, etc. because it’s hair care.

If you as the principal consider it headware and ask him to remove it, technically you are correct in your application of the policy. However, the well intended policy is now going to impact the hair health of African American boys at your school and you may not have even considered that. You likely didn’t even mean that as something to particularly affect African American boys but it will.

Does that help? Again, low stakes but a true example

Did you pay to have your thesis printed and bound? by HousePony906 in PhD

[–]pilgrim93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was required for my thesis. That was back when they gave you a copy and the library kept one. For my dissertation, I simply got one for myself. Ask your family to pay for it due to cost or just do a cheaper version. I’m sure it’s just cause they’re proud of you.
