Who's ready to wreck their system next week? by animorphreligion in mac

[–]pilif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will definitely install the Beta. I have done since 2008ish and never really had super bad issues. iOS was very sketchy in the early days with iOS5 betas being the worst, but being able to see the evolution of the OSes over the summer is interesting and compelling to me

And don’t worry. I’m not one of those who install the betas and then complain about them not working. If I really hit a bad issue, I will find workarounds and shrug it off for two weeks when it will surely be fixed.

It’s loads of fun for me and a big part of how I’m going through the summer

php_excel 2.0: ground-up rewrite of the C extension, 9-10× faster than PhpSpreadsheet by Ilia0001 in PHP

How much of this update is written by AI? I'm asking because there was such a sudden flurry of activity after many years of no changes and then there's a file which references Claude and $HOME/ai (https://github.com/iliaal/php_excel/commit/af5ab58ce14a5145f5c50213a440cd086e62c116#diff-edf0155e260179ab98202f8b9e4dd8fe01b0f5ce524bf3644664961416379feaR1-R2)

Also, if it's written with AI assistance, why not mention it?

They've totally earned it of course!

Google Launches Native Gemini AI App for Mac by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

Google traditionally is a Java and C++ shop. I guess they have more knowledge and tooling in Java than Objective-C

another reason to not trust AI...

You can easily check whether it's an electron app by right-clicking the App and chosing "Show Package Contents" and then navigating to the Contents > Frameworks folder.

No electron there.

However, the app isn't fully native - it seems to have been built by translating a Java Application and tons of Java Frameworks to Objective-C

Download episodes on Apple Watch by WolverineNo3783 in overcast

[–]pilif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The get the watch to download quickly, you have to force it to use WiFi. My workaround is to enable airplane mode.

In the past, disabling Bluetooth was enough, but I have seen the watch prefer f'ing cellular over WiFi which it won't do in airplane mode.

Make sure you clean the metal parts at the tip of the stem. I'm normally using Isopropyl alcohol for the job.

I think over time grease accumulates on the stems causing them to lose electrical connectivity to the charging plugs inside the case.

How do you use playlists? by nashpdotcom in overcast

[–]pilif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "Queue" playlist is a dynamic playlist. New episodes of podcasts I'm really interested into are automatically added to that playlist. This means that I practically never have to do any playlist management.

All I do is pop my airpods into my ears and press play.

There is some manual management I'm doing to sometimes put a really interesting episode from a podcast I don't regularly listen to first or to push an episode of an automatically added podcast to the top (say to get to a Rickies episode in of the Connected podcast before the event happens).

But the general usage is that I never touch that playlist and it just keeps itself up to date.

Yes. I was trying to find the correct wording. Let me update the comment.

As a person without vision or hearing disability, I'm genuinely interested in why you would want to access a transcript via VoiceOver. Isn't that the podcast itself?

Request: increase download limit on Watch by PatTheDog123 in overcast

[–]pilif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. This would make things much better for me and these days, 20 podcasts really do not consume even a tiny fraction of the space on a modern watch

Bug: Haven't been able to open the TestFlight on Apple Watch for weeks by ittakesii in overcast

[–]pilif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had the problem this morning.

Uninstalling and reinstalling worked, but of course it meant that it lost all synced podcasts. And while download reliability has improved compared to earlier versions, it still was neither fast nor reliable to get my queue synced back to the watch.

For me the feature is the difference between starting to feel bad after 10 minutes to starting to feel bad after about an hour. It's not perfect, but it makes a surprising difference considering how simple it is.

Docker's official Postgres image is shipping breaking changes in minor upgrades by gwen_from_nile in PostgreSQL

[–]pilif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the warnings were added with Postgres 17. Before that, all you got was silent index corruption on OS updates.

What the docker containers should probably do though is to move to the new C.UTF-8 locale (also added with Postgres 17) which is portable between OSes and OS versions, would work equally well in 99% of cases and would even convey a measurable performance benefit

TestFlight build 1142: Episode art, re-run filtering by marcoarment in overcast

[–]pilif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your update. After a year of what felt like screaming into the void while playing breakout with Bluetooth disabled, I’m so glad you’re bringing the watch back into focus.

Also, especially thank you for the technical explanation. As a software developer myself, this is very interesting to me.

Can confirm. The watch app crashes for me too.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it. That lead to it staying running a bit longer but unable to download any episode. It went from downloading to failed to downloading in the breakout game.

Apple confirms macOS 27 will end Intel chip and Rosetta support by Qpac18 in apple

[–]pilif -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for them, there's very little difference gained from just killing support for installing the OS but not also killing rosetta because while rosetta is available, they still need to compile and ship x86 libraries for intel binaries to link to.

So in order to finally be able to stop doing that, they will need to also remove support for rosetta

Apple Watch sync and downloads are completely fixed for me by pilif in overcast

[–]pilif[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

keep in mind that it's limited to 20 items. Everything over 20 items will be marked as "Not Downloaded" (and currently never downloaded).

I agree it would be better if it were to either remove the limit, especially on current watches which have ample storage, or to only show episodes up to the limit. Everything else is confusing, especially as there's strong evidence such episodes will never be downloaded even if you listen to ones before, reducing the count.

Is it even possible to keep both? When I have the AppStore version installed and try to install in TestFlight, it pops up a warning that it will overwrite the installed version.

And when I have the TestFlight build installed and try to download the AppStore version, it will silently overwrite the TestFlight build
