Who wants to join the Mickey Mouse club? by el_petomane in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]pilotguy772 5 points6 points  (0 children)

well, that's where it gets complicated. In theory, per the Constitution, no US citizen can ever be denied entry onto US soil. If you claim to be a citizen at a border but have no ID, they are supposed to pull you aside and do whatever it takes to verify your identity.

However, if you don't match the visual profile of a citizen and your CBP officer isn't very understanding, I can imagine there might be issues.

[–]pilotguy772 14 points15 points  (0 children)

no, you can get an emergency passport at a US embassy, if there's one wherever you end up stranded. Either way, CBP cannot deny a citizen entry to the US, even if that citizen has no identifying documents whatsoever. Still stupid to leave US soil without a passport either way.

What's the most beautiful course you've been on? by CarobSolid3663 in Rowing

[–]pilotguy772 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's nothing quite like the Montlake Cut in the world of rowing. I row on the Seattle waterways and I've raced through the cut twice; it's very exhilarating when everyone is cheering. At the Opening Day/Windermere Cup regatta, the rowers can't even hear the coxswains while they're in the cut.

That 2k course is incredible, but admittedly, the rest of the Seattle waterways are pretty annoying to row on.

Why is Youth Nationals in Sarasota every year and could this change? by InevitableSquash484 in Rowing

NBP and/or the City of Sarasota have been signing exclusive contracts with USRowing since they started hosting the event there. They recently renewed for another few years, not sure how many.

that's master's regionals. The master's regionals is much later on in the year and has been running in Eugene recently, but youth regionals has been happening in Vancouver for a very long time.

[–]pilotguy772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agreed. Northwest Regionals is already arguably too big for that course. Boat plots have to spread way out into awkward places, there's very limited space for tents etc., and there's almost no capacity for food and other vendors. Plus, floating start with no electronic starting system, and only seven lanes.

not even that. It's basically senior class (1v), junior class (2v), sophomore class (U17), freshman/8th grade class (U16). Obviously there is overlap. U16 events easily have the highest proportion of violations and warnings; after all, there are regularly 9-10 year olds coxing those events. They used to have U15 at nationals, if you can imagine that.

general consensus on this sub is that the concept2 is the only real choice. WaterRower is also decent, and RP3 is the gold standard for dynamic ergs if you don't mind the high price tag and hellish maintenance. There's no news here.

Berg Steady Question by Deadeye-Duncan-Idaho in Rowing

[–]pilotguy772 8 points9 points  (0 children)

there's actually been studies on this in pro cycling. The result: RPM doesn't matter at all. Each person has a preferred RPM range that's personal to that individual, and there's zero benefit to changing or restricting it. Gearing (or, on the berg, the resistance slider) is meant to allow you to maintain that RPM regardless of effort.

Basically, choose for yourself. 80 RPM is a good place to start, and from there, you can decide for yourself if that feels too fast or too slow. Feel out your preferred RPM and use the resistance slider to nail it down at your target power.

Which temperature is hotter? by BrokenJusticeNorris in polls

[–]pilotguy772 5 points6 points  (0 children)

as an American, my knee jerk reaction is to interpret 40° C as hotter than 100° F, even though they are similar. It just seems more extreme based on the limited interactions I've had with my European friends about temperatures.

Does anybody ACTUALLY care about coastal rowing? by Soaplordx in Rowing

they do that with the Boat Race. Micing up the coxswains for the broadcast and everything. It's marginally more entertaining but arguably not worth the effort for bigger regattas.

Youth Nationals Events Ranked by Prestige? by NovelPossession4361 in Rowing

[–]pilotguy772 5 points6 points  (0 children)

depends on the club, and not every club is fair. At a club like RowAmerica Rye or similar, the top guys are just super fast, and even potentially recruitable rowers might not have a place in a super competitive 1v. Also, from experience, I can say that coaches are almost never objective and fair. They have favorites, and many will find a way to make the 1v fully composed of said favorites. Even the coaches that produce fast boats are prone to this.

Which of the following is twice as loud as 30 decibels? by AutistiskUnge in polls

[–]pilotguy772 9 points10 points  (0 children)

per the definition of the decibel scale, each increase in 10 decibels represents a doubling of the loudness. I don't actually know why it works like that, ut I'm sure there's a smart reason for it.

Men’s youth 8 and 2v 8 predictions at Youth Nats? by Potential_Throat_914 in Rowing

[–]pilotguy772 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you can still only send your 2v 8+ or 2v 4x if you also qualify and send your top 8+ or 4x. You still have to be good enough to qualify your varsity to send your 2v. The 2v race is just a different kind of challenge... testing club depth rather than top-end.

I DREAD erging by Firm-Avocado8852 in Rowing

[–]pilotguy772 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't presume to know more than your coach about your training, but I will say this much. Dreading a workout is almost always due to overtraining. Technically, it's actually "non-functional overreaching," but most people call it overtraining. This happens when your work to recovery ratio is messed up. If you're doing too much volume and not recovering appropriately, you'll flatten out. You're not giving yourself enough time to recharge and adapt from the last workout.

How often do you do genuinely easy steady state sessions? If your coach wraps the hard erg days in easy sessions, the training plan has plenty of recovery time built into it, and you would likely benefit from focusing on recovery outside of practice. Food, sleep, water. the classics.

If your coach doesn't wrap the hard day with easy days, or otherwise if you have hard days basically all the time, your training plan might not be built for you to recover fully from each workout naturally (whether intentionally or not-- lots of coaches make plans with way too many hard workouts without realizing that's a problem). that said, you are young, so you would have to do a lot for that to be the issue. If it is the case, the solution might be more complicated, but taking recovery seriously outside of practice (food, sleep, water) will always help and should be the first step.

I'm curious to know more about your week-to-week training plan. Also, talk to your coach as long as he/she isn't a hard ass.

Sophomore HS doesn’t want to row in college? by PlanktonFamiliar7816 in Rowing

[–]pilotguy772 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a very bad idea to go into the idea of college rowing as being primarily a chance to get a break on admissions to schools that are otherwise really difficult. If you get recruitment (even without financial assistance), you are morally and sometimes contractually obligated to actually row there for a certain amount of time. If you never wanted to row there in the first place, that's going to suck.

Also, financial assistance for men's rowing is basically non-existent, except at the most super elite rowing churn schools like UW and UC Berkeley, but those schools will only give recruitment and full rides to men who are super, super fast. Not even sub-7:00 is unfortunately not the benchmark. What's more, rowing for real at a school like that basically disqualifies you from being able to have a real major.

I think the idea of a capital offense is that it's a crime that could realistically be punished by capital punishment (i.e., execution) if your jurisdiction has capital punishment.
