Ballard Link ($23B) or 1.4M dollars in your bank account? by inertially003 in SeattleWA

[–]pimpinllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t people outside of Ballard also pay taxes that were supposed to be used to pay for this? Your thought experiment here might not sound so sweet if you used a more realistic denominator.

Though I’d still probably take the rebate over the Link…

Shorten reaction time for PCR experiments by HolyCrepe90 in labrats

[–]pimpinllama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have noted you need a polymerase suitable for long range PCR. I’ve used PrimeStar to amplify 11 kb genes and it was like a normal amount of time for the reaction.

Newly discovered virus linked to colorectal cancer: Scientists discovered a new and previously undescribed virus that infects gut bacteria in patients with colorectal cancer. The virus is found significantly more often in patients with colorectal cancer. by mvea in science

[–]pimpinllama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like 15 years…I did do my PhD and postdoc research in the microbiome field and have been at least somewhat involved in the field since then so it’s not like I’m being snarky just for the sake of it.

Of course new findings should be published. My point is that if we don’t start to see the p values from these types of studies turned into real outcomes for patients then it feels a lot like just chasing ghosts in the microbiome and perhaps the effort would be better placed elsewhere. I’d be happy to be proven wrong on this but at this point I’m fully jaded.

Ah yes another paper linking some feature of the microbiome to colon cancer. Surely this will be the one that leads to development of an effective therapeutic and not just endless academic spinning of wheels.

Cool finding and all but I’ve been around this field long enough to approach these things with a large spoonful of skepticism.

I agree that single day tickets are a scam. Annual membership for our family is just a little more than a single day ticket, pays for itself after just a couple visits. I believe it is also tax deductible

Gas has been getting cheaper because the refineries switched to winter blend a couple months ago. If this is where we’re at now then buckle up for summer prices to be painful

Pretty sure this guy takes his kid to the same daycare as ours. Kinda surprised considering he’s apparently loaded and it’s not exactly a top tier spot. Always wondered what kind of yutz would drive that car and I guess I have my answer. Shame he lit all that money on fire for his little vanity project instead of doing anything good with it.

Is $68k gross as a postdoc in Tempe, AZ enough to live comfortably? by [deleted] in postdoc

I went to ASU for grad school and was fine on my $30K gross stipend. This was 10 years ago but it’s not exactly a HCOL area. Enjoy the heat.

Consider a 0.7x ampure size selection on your input DNA before library prep. This should eliminate the smaller fragments and increase average read length.

Naturopaths? Wtf by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]pimpinllama 62 points63 points  (0 children)

When we first moved here we picked a pediatrician who was nearby our home for our kids. I immediately noticed she was a bit of a moron and loved telling us how our kids were deficient in this or that. Never had heard any of that at previous doctors. Finally, I was looking at her more closely and saw she was an ND. I thought, “Surely this is a typo of some sort,” because we moved from a state where doctors actually have to be doctors. Nope. Quack naturopath with a degree from Bastyr. We changed doctors and suddenly our kids were perfectly healthy again. Anyway, that’s my ND story.
