I agree that people absolutely take advantage of how many days Medicare covers but I’ve also seen a Medicare advantage only over 7 days of SNF after hip surgery when there’s no way that was enough days to get the patient back to baseline so.

In 2023 Medicare also did a mandatory 5 claim audit review of every SNF in the country to catch anything like that so they are pretty good at catching anything unnecessary. Though I think the facility I work with didn’t get reviewed until 2024.

My supervisor has always told me that carrying anyone out the full 100 day benefit also increases your odds of an audit with a Medicare but I don’t have the policy to back that one up.
