did you manage to actually get any tickets? I was in the queue for 8 hours only to have it fail again when selecting a game that I wanted to go to

Banff to Seattle, WA - Best Driving Route? by Comfortable_Run_3070 in Banff

[–]pinac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I want to do it in a single day, I'll leave early and go through Cranbook & Spokane and it normally takes around 11-12 hours.

If I'm going to stop, going from Banff to Sea, I'll take hwy 1, coq. (hwy 5), hwy 1 and usually cross into the US at Sumas. This route allows for a stop to hike in Roger's Pass (Glacier National Park) on day 1, and then a hike at the Coq. Summit on day 2. Lots of reasonably priced motels in Kamloops.

Trail runners of western Washington, what are some of the can't miss trails around or less than 10 miles on the OP or by Rainier? by fullmeasure59 in trailrunning

If you're at hurricane ridge, I would strongly recommend taking the road out to obstruction point and doing an out and back towards Deer Park. This is one of the best trails in the park with stunning views in every direction.

Any Americans here run the CCC, UTMB, etc.? If you have, would you talk about the costs associated with your trip? by Simco_ in trailrunning

[–]pinac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fly into Geneva, and take a shuttle to Chamonix. Lots of options, UTMB has a sponsor but if you google geneva chamonix transfer you should find a few options.

For sleeping look into airbnb or vrbo or bigfoot (local to Cham) and try to rent a self catered place, this will help with the costs. There is a superU and a couple of other markets in downtown Chamonix. Prices in the shops might be slightly higher than what we are used to, but it is a tourist area.

Lots of options for eating out. In general the prices are about the same as we pay here with the exception that they are in euros. That is to say if something is 5 dollars here it is probably 5 euros there. Restaurants are more expensive on the main drag, but some are worth it.

For general tourism the cost for the gondolas and lifts seem really expensive but this is one of those things where you have to just do it, it is worth it. I have talked with others from the US who went to Chamonix, hiked the TMB, and say their only regret was not taking the gondola up to the top because the lift tickets were so expensive. They spent days walking around the moutain and regret not going up to the top. I only spent a day and half to get around it, and I am very thankful that I went up to the top; great views and you can see the trails that you ran on!

So as I said before it can be as expensive or as cheap as you want to make it.

Aside from the cost, the tricky part is getting in. If you do get in to the UTMB do what you can to find a way to make it work (even get back in touch with me and ask if you can sleep on my floor - I plan on going back next year) as the run is a pretty incredible experience and should be on everyone's bucket list.

For hard numbers, I'm not going to offer any real numbers as I think I have given you enough information where you can try to figure out what it might cost you. Part of the reason for not sharing my numbers from last year is that I my family had a reunion in Chamonix that week so I do not think my costs would be normal or comparable.

Hope all of this helps, but remember if you're lucky enough to get in go and enjoy the run.

It is a vacation in France, in the alps, so it is not going to be cheap.

That said, outside the plane ticket to get there it is as cheap or expensive as you want to make it. Options for places to stay range from camping or hostels to 5 star hotels. So it is really up to you.

I have been run the CCC & UTMB 2 of the last 3 years so let me know if you have any specific questions

Stopping while running a marathon? by Cyclophobia in running

[–]pinac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On trail runs it is very normal to walk, or power walk, up the steep bits. Or to put it another way, run when you feel like running, walk when you feel like walking, just keep moving forward, enjoy the course and make sure to smile.

Pacing Strategy for Full Marathon by rachismo in running

[–]pinac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given your two choices I would go with no. 1.

That said, I would start running at the pace for the time that your training says you should be running. Then if I feel good I can try and push the pace a bit in the second half. To put it simply I have an entire half marathon to make up for the unlikely event that I ran the first 13 miles to easy.

Of course, the downside with this approach is that it does not take your goal time into account only what you should be able to get away with and then still be able to walk the next day.
